Not sure why my mpg is higher than what I am reading here.
I just bought my Prius 3 weeks ago (and loving every minute of it).
Right now I avg. 49.5 mpg.

I bought mine in Feb 08. I was ave. 48 MPG in the winter. April in May I am getting 53. Part of the increase is do to the warmer weather. I live in the Boston area but also I am coasting a lot more and I am coasting without regeneration being done. This allow for much longer coasting and you maintain you spend for longer.

I also start off slower and and think ahead more. I guess you could say I have learned how to drive my Prius.

    I love it

I am a new 2009 Prius owner and I must say that I love the car and this forum so far (driven about 1,200 miles). I am getting the hang of pulse and glide and have seen my mileage increase without altering the tire pressure as of yet. This leads me to my question - can you provide links to the model of tire gauge and portable air pump that you mention above?

Also is there a newbie link for checking the oil level? Also is there additional information on why this is important right from the get go with the Prius? This might be in the owners manual but I am on a business trip at the moment. Thank you so much for the fantastic forum!

I just got a 2005 Prius with 20000km (12k miles) on it. My daily commute is 128km (80 miles) and i am averaging 5.5L/100km (62 miles per every 1.4 gallons -- roughly 38mpg mostly highway driving). Gasoline here is nearly $9/gallon (13SEK/liter) and i am in love. I plan on reading up on everything here to get the most out of my new ride. Thanks for being here!

Wow, 60.9 is a ton. Rocking my 2005 Prius currently. It initially had 38MPG when I bought it at 134,000 miles. First thing I checked was PSI which was nearly 25. Awful. Juiced it up to 42 front and 40 back. MPG went up to 43mpg. Then I decided to change the original 12V battery. Juiced up yet another 2 MPG at 44-45. For a while I stuck with this, then replaced my brakes since originals were still on. In a way, the new brakes almost feel like they added more since not much pressure is needed to brake. 45-46 at this point. Finally did complete synthetic oil with Mobil 1 5w30 extended performance. This with also fresh new cabin filter and engine filter. For the longest time my average was then 48MPG and rarely 50mpg. Just recently did my spark plugs at last and behold my MPG jumped 7 more! Hit 57MPG which is my current record. Loving this baby. Maybe Trans fluid replacement may add more. Don't know. My next project soon.

Just to clarify that is 60.9 MPG(UK) (4.64 l/100 km) or 50.7 MPG stateside.

Congrats, though on getting your car to where it should be! Keep up the good work.

First post here, been lurking for a few months as ive been waiting to finally own a Prius. I just purchased my first Toyota which is a 2005 Prius 2 days ago. I have been waiting for the right deal and was lucky enough to purchase an 05 Prius with 98k for under $3k. New battery and new tires recently installed by prior owner too! The main issue ive noticed is above 30mph the front end makes a wierd humming noise and ive narrowed it down to the front wheel bearings. Aside from that, I ak currently averaging 43.1 mpg which surely beats my 2 SUVs combined at the pump. Looking forward to the savings in fuel!

Hi I'm a new member with an old 'Prius (05). After a few tanks of getting used to each other,
I seem to be getting 25 city, 40 hi way. I'm concerned about, brakes, cv joints, shocks, hubs, water pump, belt and other non routine but expected maintenance of hi mileage vehicles. When do I need a professional Toyota mechanic, and when can a good owner mechanic do our own work?

    welcome!

    1) how many miles on her?

    2) do you know any maintenance repair history

    3) brakes should be inspected every 5k, and the caliper pins lubed every 30k on the front. other than that, you replace them as necessary
    4) cv joints when they start to make noise, same with hubs/wheel bearings

    5) struts when you get leaking or poor ride

    6) same with water pump, but can do with belt around 100k, the belt is on the maintenance. schedule iirc

    7) all the best!(y)

Our first Prius, 2008, Gen 2 from what I have seen so far.
Average MPG is between 29 and 46 MPG, 212K miles.
I really love the dynamic braking...so easy on the actual brakes when this is active.

    Your post is contradictory.

You say "30-53 mpg range is what I get always ..." then you say "never higher that 47mpg on a whole tank".

The end of your last sentence should be: "I'll never get 60 MPG ever; its a pipe dream for me. If you are referring to post #28 where the poster stated a figure of 60.9 MPG, that is UK MPG. 60.9 MPG (UK) is 50.7 MPG stateside or 4.64 l/100 km in the metric world. 50.7 MPG is inside the range you said you always get.

It is never a good idea to project one personal experience onto the whole community.

IM REFERING TO THE STICKER 60 MPG IN THE CITY AT THE DEALER. I can get 53 mpg at first on a tank but after 200 miles it goes to 47 mpg, if that makes more sense btw heres to an end of free speech, I guess? My personal experience if perfectly fine! hahaha

The purpose of those stickers is so prospective purchasers can compare relative economy of different vehicles. It is not meant to be an achievable real world goal. I thought everyone knew that. I read that the EPA had changed the testing methodology a few years ago to make the test more like real life, but it still is higher than what most people can do.

So, are you saying you recently saw a Gen 2 prius advertised as able to achieve 60 MPG on an official EPA sticker, or was it just some off hand advertising at a no-name dealer/private sale?

(BTW, I didn't realise free speech gave all and sundry the right to hurl insults.)

it was on the 2005 prius I bought a year ago at a Toyota Dealer Feb 2018, yes they put an old sticker on my car, should I sue them for false advertising ? I know the Epa numbers are different now ect, Ive had a million hours of reading time on the subject. Greico Toyota is sleazy like that I guess. I just hang up on them when they call me now. their favorite line " how can we get this sale to happen today?"
