 Last night I was trying to reset my ScanGuage II to recognize the hybrid. While wildly pressing buttons and waiting for the traffic light to change, my car died! A long beep, red triangle of death with the exclamation mark in it lit up, and the screen said with great understatement, "Problem"! I was on a main street with cars coming 40 mph about 3 blocks away. Quickly I hit the flashers on, tried to restart with no luck. Realizing I may have caused the event by trying every button on the gauge hoping to hit the right spot where "hybrid" was hidden (it's under 'fuels' BTW), I yanked the Scanguage from it's socket and then succesfully restarted the car before I was creamed from behind.

I pulled over to a well lit spot to gather my thoughts. The warning triangle was still lit. What to do at 10 p.m. on a Sunday night? On a whim, I plugged the Scanguage in again, pushed the button for codes. Indeed a code appeared! Desparately wanting this episode to go away, I pushed "clear code" before my better judgment could get a pencil and write it down. The red triangle of death went away and the car has been fine today.

I must have caused the problem, but I had no idea the Scanguage could confuse the computer or cause a problem.

Can anybody comment as to what must have happened?

Not a specific comment, a general one. The Chassis Area Network is a computer network with many devices listening and talking. Pushing all those buttons was the equivalent of a stranger walking into a party where everyone knows each other and yelling FIRE! No wonder it brought the conversations to a halt.

What were you doing pushing the Scan Gauge II buttons in traffic at 10 p.m. Sunday night if you didn't know what you were doing and didn't have the Scan Gauge set up??? You don't have to answer that question.

 Guilty as charged! I had removed the ScanGuageII for the 15K service at the dealer and somehow lost the settings. The guage backlight kept going off when the ICE stopped. I remembered the hybrid setting somewhere in the set-up screen so I just kept tapping the buttons. The hybrid setting is not in the "Engine" selections as one would think! Lucky for me traffic was light, and I had about 15 seconds to try to reset. Moral of the story is: play with ScanGuage at home!

Thanks, Bill, for the help. I was a bit worried that I had really messed things up when the warning Triangle wouldn't go away. Sorry I didn't get the code to see what kind of cursing my Prius was giving me!

I had a similar experience today. Plugged in a new scangaugeII into my
    2004 Prius.
Would not connect, then every dashlight lit up, a red suare with PS in the center consol appeared. The red triangle of doom. I could not turn car on or off, remove the key, etc.
I eventually got the car to turn off, but when it started, still had red triangle of doom, and engine running very rough!!!

    Here is how I resolved:
    1) press and hold prius power button until it turned off
    2) disconnected cable negative cable from 12 volt battery for a minute or so.
    3) reconnected battery
    4) prius started and running as before.

I think I have a defective scangauge as it also failed to connect to my 2000 Insight.

I'll let you know what happens as I not try to get a new one from scangauge.

I haven't had a problem since my earlier episode. You may have a defective one, but try again to connect, but at home with lots of time to spare....

Are you sure your Prius did not come with Windows installed? :frusty:

The company quickly resolve my issue and sent me a replacement!!!!

    Per Linear Logic:
"In late January we discovered that a small number of our ScanGauge units had an incorrect component placed on the main circuit board by our supplier. It causes the ScanGauge to operate at twice the normal frequency, which likely cause the issues with your Prius. "

The new unit is working perfectly!! :)

:DThanks for the report back! I find the ScanGauge a perfect addition to the Prius.... as long as you don't go crazy pushing buttons (see original post)!

Mine has caused three malfunctions in about 4 years. After a couple of years the central locking failed to operate from the key but was OK on the door switch. The local Prius dealer fixed it quite rapidly after disconnecting the Scangauge to plug in their diagnostic tool and then chided me for leaving anything permanently on the diagnostic port (he did however run me home and picked me up and only charged $A120 and I didn't even buy the car from them). The second time it happened, about 6 months later, I knew what to do and pulled out the RJ45 pug and restarted the Prius. A couple of days ago the Cruise Control light started flashing and I could turn it off but not engage the cruise control - removing the RJ45 and restarting the Prius fixed the problem.
Having said that, it is an invaluable device for monitoring coolant temperature (I hate warning lights), RPM and 12V and traction battery voltage. Is there a code for anything other useful readings?

Here's my recent Scangauge II story. I've owned one since around 2005 and used on a 2004 Prius and currently in a 2007. Recently the backlight started flickering. Scangauge said to mail it back and they would repair it for free - and they did. Great customer service. They also updated the firmware on my unit. A couple of days after installing my updated unit I got the Red Triangle. The car was still driving fine. There were no codes to read so I even tried my bluetooth OBDII and other apps - no codes shown. I cleared it and the red triangle disappeared and it stayed clear for a couple of days. Then it came back again - with no codes. I brought it to Toyota just to be safe. Nothing on their reader or inspection. A few A/B tests showed that somehow my Scangauge with an updated backlight and firmware was causing the issue. One again Scangauge said they would send me a new one to test. Those guys are tops in customer service. Awaiting the new unit now.

Here's an update. Got the new Scangauge. Plugged it in and set it up. Worked fine for several days. Then I set up a few Xgauges (Hybrid battery SOC and Voltage along with Tire Pressure. Today I switched one of the displays to TP and another to Hybrid Battery Voltage. A minute later - the Red Triangle and several warning lights came on. I stopped and cleared the codes (there were none stored) and changed the displays all to non Xgauge settings. Red Triangle light cleared and didn't reappear. Apparently there is something in the Xgauges that is causing the problem in my 2007 Prius.
