I have been working on project and the results are in. I took a DC to AC inverter and pugged into one of the cigarette lighters. then I pugged a six outlet strip into the inverter. Then I got six battery chargers that each will charge four D cell batteries at a time (so that is 24 D cell batteries). So I charge all 24 batteries at night then take the FULLY charged batteries and plug it all into the Prius. The result after two tanks of gas is a 11.7 MPG increase!

Sounds great, care to share a picture of the setup?

The D cell chargers are charged off wall AC sockets and then plugged into the Prius's power strip in the morning? Can anyone explain how this works to increase MPG? Thanks. Exciting!

Oh wait, it's April Fools Day....

These are emergency cell phone chargers. You can buy them anywhere. I spliced a 12v cigarette lighter plug in place of the cell phone power jack. When I am sitting at a red light, I whip out my SOS Charger and plug it into the 12v outlet and start cranking. I can usually get the traction battery up a couple of bars in the few minutes I am sitting there idle.

Nice work! I read an article where some guys wanted to offset their web server's electricity usage so they connected a solar PV panel to an inverter (DC to AC)and simply plugged it into the wall socket to feed power back to the grid. This is obviously illegal but demostrated their point perfectly.

Now I'm trying to understand how your setup actually feeds electricity to the car. How does the DC power from the fully charged batteries flow backwards thru the chargers to the powerstrip? Are you saying that the chargers are acting like an inverter (creating AC current from the batteries' DC)?

If I take my household battery charger and install charged batteries, I don't think I would get any voltage reading from the A/C plug

Glad I got someone. Thanks joephu, get revenge by tricking someone next year. The popular tick in my office this year was putting a small post it on the optical mouse sensor so the mouse would not work.

Into what part of the Prius do you plug the batteries?

Maybe Peloton or Life Fitness can come up with an in-car pedal powered charger with a live coach screaming at the driver and/or passengers to keep pedaling. Would be a cure for bored kids in the back seats too. Or a mother in law back seat driver. They’d then really be screaming, “Are we there yet?”
