replacing convex with flat mirror

Go to a window glass replacement place, ask them to stick plain flat mirror over your convex glass. They will cut it to match what you have.

 

Alternatively, you might be able to find a "close enough", if not perfect, glass match at an auto parts store for around $10. Just make sure it's glass, and not the mylar reflective material that they also sell.

If you do go with the glass shop custom cut, can you let us know how much it cost? If reasonable, I might want to do it too, or I might do it if and when either of my side mirrors' glass is ever cracked or shattered.

Just curious... How long have you been driving. Those mirrors have been on passanger cars for years.

 

Be very, very careful because you will get a large blind spot because you are much further from the mirror than you are from the flat mirror on the driver's side. If you do put a flat mirror there, you will also need a large blind spot mirror there or you will feel some real pain when you switch lanes without seeing what is really just beside you.

 

Or you could turn your head, it's why we have a moveable spine all the way from our bum to our skull.

 

the vehicle is engineered and the mirrors put that way for a reason, but there are alternatives @ your local auto parts but doubt very much that an aftermarket is available, custom glass is the way to go but how long will it last i dont know if a custom cut mirror will be able to withstand the weather, food for thought....

4536 Kilograms (kg) = 10000.1675513 Pounds (lb)

Guess that it's close enough to 10K lbs. for government work.

 

While the US DOT may speak in metric terms, it thinks in customary measure.

 

One wonders why they don't speak in US measurements then. At least now I know why we use 4.50 tonnes as the maximum GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) for a light vehicle. Before metrication the limit was an unladen mass of 3.5 tons.

Can't you just get another driver's side mirror, Prius or other mirror that is close in size, trim to fit and replace the passenger mirror in it's housing?

 

I don't think it is safe to change lanes without looking over your sholder.

 

That's it, zeeman! Import a Japanese driver's side mirror! Since Japan is right-hand drive, the driver's outside rearview mirror will be flat. You can probably get just the mirror, not the whole assembly. Get in touch with Sigma Automotive or Japanparts.

 

Do you ride a bike too? get ready to get howled down like I was for suggesting such an atrocity.

Also you might hear about how dangerous it is to leave any more than 18 inches between cars at highways speeds. God forbid another driver might squeeze in.

If I were zeeman I would first test any ordinary flat mirror that fits, before spending any real money.
