I have been missing lately but I am coming to the time where I would like to explore extended, genuine, Toyota, Prius warranties.
Last time I was here there was Troy and he was offering them at $990.
Can some one please tell me what is happening now?
Sorry to duplicate what must be millions of questions.
    Thanks :D

We bought a new Prius (2007 model) two weeks ago. The dealer from whom we bought the car had offered us to buy the extended warranty for 7 yrs/75000 miles for $1825!! Hesitant on making a decision right-away, we decided to defer our decision for a couple of days and checked online if the price was reasonable..Guess what! we read about Troy offering atleast 60% less than what was offered to us.we contacted Troy and got the same deal done for $695 :)

Troy is very much into this business and the whole procedure has been very smooth and fast with him :)

Wait. You got the warranty from Troy for $695, and not $990?

    The $990 price is for 7 years/ 100,000 miles not the 7 years / 75,000 miles plan.

Thanks. I read too quickly and didn't see the 75,000 miles part. BTW, notice that their dealer was going to charge them way over Toyota Financial's MSRP for the warranty.

Hey Boo...I was thinking along the same line as you. You paid $695 and not $990?????? Anyhoo, does anyone know whether the extended warranty covers the car battery? I just had tints installed in my '05 Prius and the installer said that my battery was low since my windows didn't work. They had to charge my battery.

    Hi Everyone....

I am new to this board, and new to a Prius. Just got mine on Friday night. After renting one for a week up in NJ, I felt remorse turning it in at the end of the week, it was so much fun to drive.

Anyway, I am getting the usual dealer pressure about an extended warranty. The top of the line warranty (6 years, 100K miles) was around $1850, which they wanted to finance. I don't want to finance a warranty.

What's out there today? What's the recommendation from you all on this board about getting a real Toyota extended warranty? I have to meet the finance guy in an hour, and will not purchase the warranty from him today, despite his protestations.

    Thanks.

Don't do it. Don't buy the warranty from him. You can get Toyota's best extended warranty (Platinum Care 7 years/100,000 miles) here for $990. You have until 3 years/36,000 miles to get it.

Troy is still around and still offering a great warranty for $990.

In fact, when I bought my Prius (late November 2007), I stupidly paid $2,100 (yeah--that's why I said "stupidly") for the extended warranty through my dealer.

Then I discovered Priuschat--and I was SAVED! ($1,100 worth of saved, to be exact).

I spoke to Troy, then to Toyota's warranty facility, and canceled the old warranty. Troy called me at home to make sure that I sent him all the info on time, and I got a better warranty for less money.

    --Joe

PS, in the interest of accuracy, I should say that I actually saved $1,075--I had to forfeit a charge of $25 to cancel the original warranty.

OK, so I paid $1595 for the extended warranty (platinum 7yr/75k, which is fine since I drive less than 10,000 mi a year anyway). But I just got the confirmation in the mail, giving me 30 days to cancel. Sounds like I should, and get the cheaper warranty here.

But I'm also wondering... What kind of repair bills have you Prius owners been seeing over the last 7 years/75-100,000 miles. It seems to me that with all the gadgets on this car, all it takes is one major repair to have the warranty pay for it self. But on the other hand, it seems these cars are EXTREMELY reliable. Thoughts on this? What kind of repair bills is everyone seeing after several years?

Consumer Reports and others find Prius much more reliable than average. Instead of making a profit for the company selling the warranty, make a profit for yourself by saving or investing the purchase price (or if, ghod help you, you're financing the car, use it to reduce the amount of the loan).

Thanks Guys. I did catch up with Troy. The Toyota extended warranty (7yr / 100k miles) is still $990.

Funny thing is that my Toyota dealer was pushing a different warranty.....not the one from Toyota. Guess he makes more money with the other company's warranty.

My Prius is amazing. Really enjoying driving it.

This makes me angry. I am so going to the dealer and cancelling our ridiculously expensive warranty. We were charged $1998 with $100 deductible. should have known better...:frusty:

I think anger at the dealer is the proper emotion. But don't blame yourself even a little bit by thinking that you should have known better. The inherent inequities between the two sides in a sales transaction are huge. The dealer's Closer might close a sale several times a day. You, the average consumer, buys a new car once every 5 or more years.

I apologize as I know this question has probably been asked. I have been searching for over an hour trying to find out more about the $990 warranty. Some of the links are old enough they don't seem to work for me:) sorry. This warranty is basically the same warranty as what the dealer provides, minus a deductible? Plus it includes a few extras? The dealers in my town should accept this warranty and not hassle me about it? I just want to make a more informed decision than I originally made at the dealer:rolleyes: Thanks for all your expertise. I enjoy reading this site and find it easy to spend a little too much time here! melanie

    Hi everybody,

I just got a new Prius, and (is everyone ready to be shocked?) I'm loving it. :) I'm also very glad to have found PriusChat - it really feels like a power base, and I've already learned a lot of important tips from going over previous discussions.

I'm wondering if You could help me figure out whether an extended service contract (a.k.a. "extended warranty") is worth the expense. Has anyone used it? When? For what? And I'd like to second the question that neilroberts posted a little while ago: What kind of repairs have people here had to do on their Priuses (Prii? :p) over the years of having them, other than scheduled maintenance? I'm really curious to hear.

Also, I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly what's covered under an extended service contract. It turns out that, for example, wheel alignments wouldn't be covered, nor are diagnostics (I asked Troy the Fabled about this via Email, and that was his answer). So an extended service contract is not exactly like full medical insurance for my car... Which brings me back to the original question - is an extended service contract worth getting?

Thanks so much, enjoy the meanwhile,

    - Eran

Dealerships will frequently lay on heavy pressure to get you to buy the warranty, and especially if you finance through them. They'll often imply that if you don't you might be in some sort of dire trouble.

Well, we can see why. They wanted to charge me $2000 (and change) for the Platinum, and I had already been lurking here and was aware of the $990 deal available, so I simply told them no thanks. I wasn't financing, paid cash for the car, so they didn't have much leverage but the dude told me "I'm real surprised you don't want the warranty, this is a very complex and intricate car and a lot could go wrong with it....." to which I responded "Oh, really? Are you telling me I shouldn't buy it because it is trouble-prone?" He totally backed off at that point.
