Yes, it looks ugly. I don't know why I bought it. Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't notice before.

Yes, it is slow. So slow that I would rather walk.

Yes, it has crappy specs. I was stupid to think that a Power button is cooler than turning a key.

Yes I am a smug. I go to others without Prii and tell them how stupid they are to drive beautiful, fast, great cars.

I learnt a good lesson from you today. I will dump the Prius and will go for a Aztek. At least that looks pretty. (right?).

    Hi Sydney,

Here is an article from Popular Mechanics that gives us a Diesel VS Hybrid overview. The last three pages are the ones I focused on mostly.

Diesel Vs. Hybrid - Popular Mechanics

Hope this helps..."six in one hand, half a dozen in the other..." as my father is fond of saying. Also, on the environmental/consumer issue, I believe it is a matter of taking steps necessary to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, something that adding a big battery and electric motors to assist an already small gas sipping gasoline powered engine does. A straight gas or diesel powered car, no matter how fuel efficient and tech advanced, does not reduce dependence. Both hybrids and newer fuel efficient cars are better for the environment, but only one reduces dependence. As for taste and looks, that's a personal matter. There are minds here who love the way a certain car looks and feels, and there are others who feel the opposite about the same car.

The Prius works for me because:
    1. My fiance wanted one
    2. My fiance wanted one
    3. I needed a better commuter car
    4. I wanted to support new technology
    5. I liked it better than the Civic (performance wise)

Also, when we first purchased the car, I didn't really like the way it looked, I liked the way it felt driving it. It has been a few months, and NOW I'm starting to like the way it looks. I guess it had to grow on me.

    Sydney,

At first, I thought, do you even deserve a response?

Why are you on a Prius site bashing our lovely car? You have to know that you'll be bashed right back. Forget about your diesels in Europe..they do us no good in the US because we don't have them...Besides, the Prius does emit less emissions and the cost of a Prius is relatively cheap compared to other cars on the market here. I am not a huge fan of its looks on the outside, but the interior is phenomenal and the power is fine for everyday driving.

So, say what you will about our beloved Prius across the water there! We will continue to buy them and save $$ on fuel, therefore, your comments will not be necessary on this forum, TROLL!;)

You answered your own question by stating everyone has their own opinions and preferences. What is it that you find so intriguing?

It looks like the troll has disappeared, with tail tucked, back into the slimy, smelly hole he crawled out of.

So Sydney out of interest what exactly do you drive? If it's a £25 congestion charge motor then my guess you'd equally only been seen dead in one of the small diesels as much as a Prius?

BlackPri08 -- I actually did move to Europe (a year in Paris) and saw not one Prius anywhere in Europe. I did see like a zillion Smart cars and they don't do anything as well as a Prius. Lots of smelly diesels too but I don't think they get the mileage of a Prius.

    I too have a black 2008 #4

Sure, nobody wants to be played for a fool, but too-quickly deciding that someone is a troll can waste an opportunity to sway opinion. Sydney sounded to me genuinely skeptical and not completely closed-minded, and not like someone merely trying to ruffle feathers.

I belong to a motorcycle rider's forum where the language can be a bit salty at times, and the treatment of trolls there tends to closely resemble an ugly dogpile. I've noticed that I don't see a lot of profanity on this site, which is a good thing. However, I truly think that we are dealing with a troll of the worst kind here, and I'd like to suggest to him that he go suck a bag of d*cks.

Look HardCase, I know how you feel, but I honestly think you are being a little to terse in this case.

Seriously, and I'm not kidding about this, any more references to anyone performing the kind of act you propose to a gaggle of ducks that have been mishandled and thrown into a bag will not be tolerated. We simply do not tolerate animal cruelty around these parts.

I second that...because of course NOW Syd probably thinks we're even worse than the car!

    :tape: over.

AFTER HAVING MY PRIUS FOR 3 WEEKS I FIND THIS TO BE A GREAT CAR IN EVERY WAY.. THE BEST PART OF IT ITS FUN TO DRIVE, AS I FIND IT A GREAT CHALLENGE TO GET THE MOST OUT OF IT(MPG).. I CANT GET OVER THE ROOM IN IT. IT HAS AS MUCH ROOM AS A CAMRY INSIDE FOR LEG ROOM.. THE DASH IS LAID OUT GREAT, WITH GOOD VISIBILTY..IT HAS ALL THE BELLS AND WHISTLES THE MY OTHER CARS HAVE (S43O MERCEDES, AND A SL500).. IN FACT IF THE PRICE OF GAS GOES UP MUCH FURTHER, I'M THINKING OF TRADING IN THE S430 FOR ANOTHER PRIUS.. I GUESS IT GETS TO THE POINT OF BEEN THERE DONE THAT WITH ALL THE CARS. THE PRIUS BY FAR IS THE WAY TO GO FOR THE FUTURE... I AVERAGE ABOUT 54 MPG'S. JUST CHANGED THE OIL AFTER 800 MILES PUT IN SYNTHETIC OIL IN IT.. KEEP 45LBS OF AIR IN THE TIRES AND BLOCKED THE GRILL... I HOPE YOU ALL ENJOY YOUR PRIUS AS MUCH AS I DO...

Ok, so here is my take on all of this. I realize I might be feeding the troll, but here goes:

I am currently on Prius #2. I love the way the Prius looks - it stands out in the crowd. There is no doubt when you see one on the road that you know what you are looking at.

I also like the performance - especially in city driving. And it's easy to park in the city as well.

I am very happy with the mileage - I did seriously consider a VW Jetta TDI prior to Prius purchase #1 - but there are too many horror stories out there about the reliability of VW and the Jetta in general. Prius has stellar reliability. Not to mention how hard is is to find a station that carries diesel fuel - when you do find one the cost of diesel is so much higher - and then there is the mess it leaves on your hands when you are filling up. I know there have been great advances in diesel technology, but they are still not anywhere near being PZEV like the Prius is.

I love everything about the Prius - no doubts whatsoever for me.

A bag of ducks is bad enough -- I am still trying to get over the nightmares when the butler puts the kittens in a bag to "kidnap" them in "The Aristacats." Glad I got THAT off my chest. Lots of money wasted on therapy...

Re: No ducks were harmed in this thread

I agree, that my terseness verged on inexcusable and that I probably left a mistaken impression regarding our web-footed friends. I can assure all concerned that no ducks or other waterfoul of any species were harmed or injured in the formulation of my earlier comments. The bag was impervious to moisture, while at the same time very porous and comfortable. In fact, I think the ducks actually liked it.

I agree we should not feed the Trolls! Is this guy sincere? Is he playing with us?
I did not buy the car because it was a concept design. I did not buy the Prius because of Al Gore and his greeness.
My Prius will, easily, stay with traffic on Chicago Freeways at 80 and then surge to pass easily at will. Not only that but get 40-50mpg without effort. Lastly I have been in, not owned, many more expensive cars that can not touch the Prius technologically. The interior is more roomy than most people would realize.
Please let us not feed the trolls any longer. Enough said.

I can't beleive with all this gripeing no one came up with some of the simple reasons... like...
    1. In the U.S. Diesel has costed more than gasoline for at least the last 2 yrs if not more. Right now it is $3.10 gas to $3.70 for deisel.
    2. There normally is one Diesel pump for small vehicles. That is one pump with a small nozel to fit into the tank compared to the several for gasoline or few for large diesel trucks.
    3. Winter. I deal with several deisel trucks at work and when it gets below zero you never know if they will start or not. Not once worried about my prius.
    4. Very few small diesel models are available because of the new emmision requirments. And to get those requirements decreases the efficiency and drops the mileage. Also many have driving requirement that have you drive at 30mph for 30 mintutes to burn off the particulates. This is fine for some but in citys not easily done. This I pulled right out of a ford owners manual for an f-350
    5. How many of these cars you mention have the available features. And when you add them on what then does the cost of the car end up. I like my touch screen control, smart key, Hid lights, 6 airbags, rear defrost, rear wiper, ect.
    6. Sure you may not always need 0-60 speed but when you do your glad you had it. It can sometimes make the difference from 10 second to 3 minutes of waiting at a stop sign. I used to have a chevy lumina with a 3.1 liter and can't tell any terrible difference in getting into traffic. However I also have the unfortunate privilage of driving large trucks. And when you think your lucky getting to 65 downhill with the wind pushing you it makes a difference.
    7. For all the extra electronics we do lose a few common things that can breakdown easily. IE automatic transmission. Of which I had to have work done on, on the last car.
    8. Diesel always seems more messy. Why I'm not sure... But it seems there is always a film of fuel on the pump nozzel and you always end up smelling like it.
    9. Since my first test drive to my now first month of owner ship I enjoy driving it. I can't say that about everything I get to drive or have driven. I'm even finding excuses to drive it somewhere.
    Need I go on?
