Hey Washington DC Area integrated XM owners, any of you get your units installed locally? Seems to closest prof. installer is Jon from PriusXM in Jersey.
Got Jon's unit, but installed it myself. Let me tell you, I'm never one to install much of anything, let alone ever chage a tire (isn't that what you pay the insurance companies for?). His DVD makes the install very simple and straightforward so anyone can do it. I suggest going that route, personally. Best of luck on whatever you decide/find! -m.
I had Jon do mine but I had to make a trip to NJ anyway so I just made a weekend out of it. I watched over Jon's shoulder while he worked and I wouldn't have been confident enough to do the work myself. I think next time around I'll brow beat a local installer into using Jon's kit. Tweeter did a good job on my other car so I'll probably start with them.
Jon isn't as far up as NYC--closer to Newark. He was easy to find, especially with the NAV. Depending how fast you drive you can probably do it from Northern VA in about 4 hours.
Yeah, that was my plan...I'll watch the DVD and make a judgement call as to whether or not I feel up to doing it myself, if not I'm sure the video is good enough to let Myer-Emco do it, i have a guy there that did a custom XM FM-modulated install in my last car and should be able to do a good job with this as well.
I bought my XM kit from Jon and had it installed by D.S.I. Mobile Electronics in Laurel, MD 301-490-4197. They did a very nice job as part of a total audio system upgrade (speakers, amp, subwoofer). The guys at D.S.I. have a Prius Classic as their company car!
I bought the XM radio from Coastal Tech. and installed it myself in about two hours. Not quite as simple as many would suggest but not impossible either. Their photo CD was all I used as a guide. The text instructions are OK but, as usual, a picture is worth a thousand words. I found that removing the lower glove compartment completely made the job a lot easier - not shown in their instructions. I broke two plastic clips during install, one at the bottom of the "computer" that must be moved aside to get at the back of the radio and one which holds the lower center console in place. It was cold and the plastic was brittle but I'll just get new ones from the dealer. I'm in Stafford, VA. about 40 miles south of DC so if anyone would like to see the installation or needs help with the install I would be happy to chat about it.
