Brighter LED's w/ pics Looking for a readily available brighter LED replacement for front dome? I've always wanted LED interior lights in my car. Took much advice here and ordered some off ebay (warden_jp2002 Hong Kong)). Very cool, gave off about the same amount of usable light as orig bulbs, cool factor, and were dirt cheap. But I wanted brighter and darrel stopped selling the high powered modded Luxeon LED's. So I found these ( Product Listing - OTHER scroll 1/3 down and look at the T10-PCB-Wxx White LED Lamp ). I ordered 3 with the 36 LED's. Got them this evening, hooked them up, and wow! Taking a guess they are about 5 times as bright as the 1Watt LED's from Hong Kong. On the downside, they are $20 a pop, and only really useful for the front dome lamp (all 3 168's) unless your really creative. It is free shipping in USA however. They fit beautifully in the front dome lamp, diffuser installed and all, but I have not permanently installed them yet...it is night here. I will mod them in the square openings as they fit very nicely. Will take pics when installed. EDIT: Should have put this in Mods section my bad. Could MODS move this to Prius Modifications please thanks! ;-)
Brighter door and dome LED's Cool! For the door puddle lights you could use WLED-WHP6 6-LED bulb, though some would be shining into the door. For the festoon bulbs you could use 3022-x9 LED Festoon bulb or 022-WHP2 Festoon bulb which look like they fire in one direction (desirable). And the Universal PCB LED Lamp kit looks like you could use it about anywhere.
I thought about ordering all my LED's from superbright led's.com, but for the price I wanted to try out warden_jp's lights to make sure I liked the "blueish flourescent" look. And I do That PCB kit looks like it might be fun! I'll be ordering some more from them soon and post results in comparison to the ebay LED's. Thanks for your input on previous threads Bill concerning LED replacements.
lemme know what you think. I have warden's LEDs as replacements for my licence plate bulbs. I have heard about superbrightleds.com from other forums and the results have been mixed. Some say they're fantastic, others say the life is short.
Got them installed. After overthinking how I was going to mount these I opted for the easy way out and I like it. It's very secure and nothing about the factory fixture was changed except a couple of little scrapes to the plastic around the 168 sockets. Just used clear zipties daisy chained for length. Not the neatest job, but with diffuser installed you really can't tell. And for a bonus for those of you who like the "factory dim" it still works.
I know this thread's about the LEDs but wow, that leather looks good (keep in mind I'm from up north, we don't get factory leather)
Heh thanks I got it installed after I bought the car. It was part of my haggling when I purchased it and told the dealer to add the install no charge to my offer or I'm walking....they called me back the next day and said they'd do it
It is a perfect fit and I do like the color, or rather lack thereof. The LED's from superbrightled's are more stark white in comparison to warden_jp's. His have that slight blueish tint to them.
Cool! Man, those boards look like they were made to fit in there. Great! That they dim means that they're not regulated (but we knew that) and just use a dropping resistor. This translates into a possibly short life. But for the price, I think it is likely worth the risk!
So far so good Been using them everyday for 8 months still dimming properly and nary a one burned out. 2 of jp_wardens though have gone on me (behind visor) and I rarely use those!
I now have 1.5W LEDs from DealExtreme and they are much brighter. The 1W LEDs from jp_wardens are just collecting dust now. They are still working and none of them died on me yet. I'll take a pic or video when I have a chance. A pair of 1.5W bulbs for $10 shipped: DealExtreme: $10.04 T10 1.5W 75-Lumen White LED Light Bulb for Vehicles - Aluminum Shell (DC 12V) 2-Pack They also have one 2W (4 x 0.5W) for $11 shipped: DealExtreme: $10.83 Car Festoon+T10+AB99 4*0.5W 2W T10 100-Lumen White LED Light Bulb - Aluminum Shell (DC 12V)
AHAHHAAHAHAHAH THIRTY-SIX SUPER-BRIGHT WHITE LEDs PER BULB AHAHAHAHAH That's like using a .44mag to hole-punch a couple sheets of paper... I bet it looks amazing, though. I think I would have changed the mounting angles for some of the LEDs to get the light more evenly spread throughout the car though. But wow... ~ dan ~
I wouldn't buy the generic Chinese LEDs from Deal Extreme. Current regulation is a bit part of LED longevity. You can make your own circuit board using perfboard and a set of reputable LEDs from Cree/Lumileds/Seoul Semiconductor/etc for not much more than what Deal Extreme is charging.
LOL!! Honestly there is no need to angle them at all....the output is...ehem....well too bright at night (it's phenomenal!), but I have a fix. A amber, which I have always wanted, lens to put over driver and passenger side domes for night viewing while driving. Center will leave natural white. My girlfriend yells at me everytime I try and turn one of the dome lights on at night...it is literally blinding for her Finally got a DSLR (prev pics are with dino Kodak 2 megapix) so I will take some night pics with a fast lens and an exposure as close to real as possible to show the output. I must admit, for the price of the 3 I bought, I did not think they would last this long. Or dim properly for that matter.
I do not know... I mean, looking at the action shot included is making me jealous. It looks seriously awesome... Kinda like one of those no-shadow lights they use in an operating room! ~ dan ~
Did not have enough time last night, but snapped 2 quick photo's @ midnight. As close as I could get it to "real life" without my fast lens.
Usbseawolf, Do you have any pictures of the light output? Any comparisons between wardenjp's bulb and the DX ones? I am interested in buying the 1.5w ones but I would like to see the light output. I am worried that they might look too blue.
