So I have been tinkering w my new to me '05 base system & here is what I ended up with.

Dynomat crazy-doors, rear qtr panels, spare tire area etc.
Front speakers Infinity 6020 reference, rears 6.5 focal polyglass. The latest kenwood sw10 amped sub & 300.4 ARC audio amp both in rear compartment.
I used the harness connectors to tap into the stereo speakers at the radio, then peripferal hi/lo into monster rca to the amp etc.

I am blown away at the quality of the sound this makes. crystal clear all the way around- high/mid/base. No hiss or hum at all. This system cranks it on.

Took way too much time to do it all but sooooo worth it.

Done for now- till dei sirius comes out (if ever)

I would highly recommend swapping the Focals to the front as they are far superior speakers compared to the Infinitys. Unless, of course, you do all your listening in the back seat. Rear speakers are typically for fill. You want the best you can get, for the front stage.

The focals are coax so they are in the right location,
I do prefer the focal components over the infinity when I listened originally, but at the time I thought they were too expensive or over my budget. I am amazed at the quality of the sound right now & dont see too much need to switch. Might explore the focals later.

Great to know you like the install of the latest Kenwood Sub KSC-SW10 -- I just ordered one on Friday and can't wait to get it installed. For the rest I'll wait until after the sub is installed.... I'm not as picky, just want a little more bass.

Does "Stereo upgrade" mean you are upgrading two things at once, or is this an "Upgrade to the stereo" or an "Upgraded stereo"? <rolling eyes in silliness>

Ah.. didn't know the Focals were coax. Infinity is great. The tweeters are a tad harsh, but they're still far better than stock.

Yeah ok upgrade to the stereo system:rolleyes:

    .........................................................
Well the story goes on and on some more.

I have been listening and listening and tweeking the amp etc.
Then I got the idea to try the kappa tweets w x/over in the back somewhere- what do you know the perfect spot is the padded section in the front of the rear panels- beside the seats. perfect angle to the front seats.
So I called up Arc Audio for connection suggestions and he says parallel no problem (3 ohms total) and i gave it a whirl- it sounds even better.
The more & more I have been listening the baseier (is that a word?) it has become. Not sure if it will be ok so I am going to hook it up for a trial period & if I like it mount them.
The focals must be breaking in or something as the base is getting louder & louder- yet still ultra clean. I tried the kappa tweets in different positions but will try temp mounts for the real test to see it it is worth mounting.

    >>>I want better sound. Yep, that simple. I have the stereo with 6 cd changer.<<<<

You can go crazy w upgrades. I would suggest as everyone has said go to your local stereo shop & listen. Best if you have a high end store- The Infinity speakers are an inexpensive component speaker that gives good sound - the speakers & amped sub did a ton of improvment but when I added the high low converter & amp the system lit on fire. bring your CD's you listen to and get what sounds good to you. Know that it WILL sound different in your car versus the store, and then it wont sound really awesome if you dont dynamat or equivalent.

You need to decide how much time and or money you can afford. I know I am in my car at least 1 hour a day & it may/will increase when they stop the hov stickers here so my hours & $ will get lots of use for sure.
I have never had an amp in my car before & I am blown away at the results I got. I wish I had the multi cd as now I hate the radio since the CD's sound so killer. Sirius will be next for sure.

You can get carried away with car audio. 10 years ago, my alpine cd-player with 5x7s in the back of my K-Car was awesome. It cost a total of $250 installed by a local shop. In the beginning, it was all good with the various upgrades because I was staying in the entry-level. Fast-forward to today, my desire for a good sounding, complete system, has brought up the cost more than 10 times. Whoever said ignorance is bliss is dead-on :)

And going with Steve, if you like music, and spend a lot of time in traffic. A good stereo system is worth every penny!

The trouble with having a killer sound system in your car is that you'll want to spend more time in the car than necessary... :)

On the other hand, who has time these days to listen to music in the house? I know I don't, not for any extended period of time anyway.

By trade I am a computer geek and not stupid. At least I don't think so. But I didn't half of what you guys were saying.

I realize (at least think) you didn't upgrade the radio itself but added speakers and an amp.

There were other things mentioned that I have no idea about. I also wasn't sure where in the car a couple of you were talking about. Like the one beside the rear seat pointing to the front seats ... is there room to put speakers there or am I really missing it.

Another question. About how much are you guys spending on these upgrades? I finally got my wife to go HDTV with HD TiVo boxes so money IS an object here.

Can someone give a list of priorities (include approximate prices please) on what to upgrade first? You know, the most bang for the buck. I'm not looking for something loud. If anything I'm looking for something that can be --not-- turned up loud and sound a lot better.

Instead of Sirius or CDs I would import all my CDs into iTunes using Apple's LOSSLESS which doesn't remove any CD data, then import it into an iPod and go from there. CDs in cars are too much of a hassle.

As to Sirius - I'm only in my car about an hour each way to work and back and I don't want to listen to a bunch of stuff that I'm not interested in and hope that I hear one good song before I get to work. I --know-- that you can choose what type of music but I guess I'm just too pick and only want to hear songs that I think are good. Too much of stuff on radio (including Sirius) is like tv, crap.

Just putting in new front tweeters makes a huge difference.

After that i would go with some sound deadening in the doors and the floor if you have some time on your hands.

Those two additions will set you back about $250, but you will also have a much quieter car.

I got the general idea, Smitty, but would like some help on what is meant by the "padded section in the front of the rear panels". For the Arc Audio connection, what did you hook up in parallel, and how?

the padded section I was talking about is the part between the rear door & the rear seatback- it stays in place even with the seat down.

X-over means crossover- it is one of the component pieces if a component speaker set. It sends low frequecy to the woofer & high freq to the tweeter to separate the sound. the woofers need a box or enclosure to get proper sound- tweeters do not- that is why this can be a location for a tweeter. the JBL system has a tweeter in the door panel forward of the release lever.

As Winston said- I agree 100% as that is where I started and it made a dramatic improvment. When I switched the rear speakers they did not sound right in the back. adding the amped subwoofer in the back filled out the sound- it sounded great- smooth full sound. the amp just made it really good. I have never done an amp in any of my previous systems and love it.

all that said- I tried the tweeter in that location & did not like the sound so I scrubbed the project further.

Go to a stereo place & listen to what sounds good to you first. get the fronts & sound deadening and go from there.

Also-keep in mind all this online banter can all be BS as you and winston and I & every one has different taste and listen to different music. all that has an effect- dont get sucked in to one brand or option.
Good luck & if I can help just ask,
    Steve

what can you recommend to a person like me who has the JBL system offered in Option 2 package? I think the audio is pretty good but I did notice that it could benefit from either some tweeter type of speakers in the front closer to ear level (the sound currently seems to come from low, perhaps the door?). Can tweeters be added to my system? If so, which do you recommend and is there a way for them to be hidden or integrated in a way where they won't stick out?

If tweeters aren't the answer, is the answer to get better quality front speakers? If so, can anyone recommend an affordable pair?

    Thanks

Uh, you already have tweeters in the front sail panels.
