Is anyone having problem with brake???

Perhaps an EBD or Brake Assist problem?

i have not really had to use heavy emergency braking that i can remember. at least nothing major. im sure that has a lot to do with the anticipatory driving style i have adopted.

i would hate to find out that my brakes are not going to stop me if i need it though.

i may have to find a good straight stretch of empty road and find out.

 

This does not answer Speedracer's question at all, but last winter I had to slam hard on the brakes on ice. I won't say I stopped on a dime, but I stopped in time, and never swerved a bit.

 

tested my brakes 3 times last night and the performed up to my expectations on dry pavement.

will be looking for a good time to test in the rain

 

I have just the opposite problem: my brakes are grabby and touchy. I have driven cars with spongy / anemic brakes (Especially the 2005 Ford Focus with 4,000km on it as my loaner while the Prius was in the shop) and would NOT want to keep driving a car with that problem. Take it to your dealer and get it fixed AT ONCE. Overall, I prefer my over-boosted braking, no doubt helped by the regenerative system, over weak brakes. I have had to do a couple of panic stops on the Winnipeg Perimeter highway, at night to avoid deer, and the car will stop on a dime and give you change.

 

Yes-I had a similar problem. Tried to stop quickly and brakes did not respond as expected. Should have been enough time to stop but hit car in front of me.

 

Hmmmm, Maybe we are not giving speedracer’s car the credit it is due for being smart enough not to do a panic stop and thereby preventing speed’ from getting rear-ended! After all, doesn’t the Prius have four 32 bit processors?!!! :wink:

I had the same situation happen to me years ago, but the car behind tapped my bumper. I was in a mini-panic wondering why my brakes weren’t working - until I got out of the car and found myself sliding around in a major oil slick.

Speed’ by all means have your brake system checked . . . nothing dumber than just wondering if you have a problem . . . then finding out for sure the wrong way.

 

When I took delivery of my 2000 GMC Sierra, specially ordered for towing a 8,400lb trailer, the brakes were VERY anemic. How that truck had a 9,000lb towing capacity was beyond me.

Even with the trailer brake gain cranked up so high the trailer brakes were starting to lock up, I still had very poor brakes. Of course, the GMC dealer claimed everything was ok and that I "couldn't have bad brakes," as the truck had four wheel disk brakes.

With less than 3,000km on it, I drove the truck into my implement shop and had a friend keep his foot on the brake pedal while I opened the rear bleed screws.

Air came out!

I spent a lot of time bleeding the brakes and managed to get them to a "barely acceptable" level. I've lurked at GM truck forums, and this appears to be a common complaint with GM/Chevy trucks. That's the main reason they went back to rear drum brakes for 2005!

Even though my brakes appear quite strong, I'll still be flushing and bleeding the brake fluid next year. My question: with the electric-assist power brakes, can this be done by me?

I ask as the only way to flush the ABS in my 1992 Honda Prelude SR was by using a special scan tool to activate the pump in the ABS module. I could flush and bleed the regular brakes in my Prelude, but had to visit the Honda dealer to get him to flush the ABS motor.

I'm really hoping I can work on my Prius brakes without needing dealer assistance.

 

FWIW, the local Toyo dealer bled brakes on my 4runner rather cheaply.
I was unaware of issues with ABS, etc, and bleeding. Guess I"ll leave it to the dealer.

My new Prius (2005 w/vehicle stability control, almost 3k miles now) is having trouble with brakes also - they seem to be gripping up and slipping just when I'm close to a complete stop in normal situations (coming up to a stop sign, etc). Anyone have a similar experience? Is this just normal from the regeneration or might there be something wrong?

I think it’s normal. The "slipping" you feel is the regen brakes kicking off and allowing the mechanical brakes to take over when only a few MPH are left before you come to a complete stop. If your brakes are functioning properly, most drivers and passengers will not notice the "slipping" . . . you are just a good “seat of the pants†driver.

Was wondering about brakes myself. Tried 'em inthe parking lot on we leaves. It rained last week.... what can I say. Granted. It was low speed.
But Stomped on brakes... got a slight slide... the VSC light came on... car did not skid much at all, and stopped much as any other vehicle I've driven would have, but no skid.

Not quite the same stuation, but my brakes seem to be doing their thing.

As Patrick said, the regen braking cuts out at 8 MPH. Depending on how you stop, you might not notice it at all. I generally have slowed enough by the time it gets to 8 that I have let off the brake a little and almost never feel the shift. I haven't changed my braking habits from my Odyssey, so it wasn't an intentional retraining for me.

 

i can almost always feel when the regen kicks off. but that is because i do a lot of anticipatory driving and coasting and when i do brake i only do so at the last second that can afford me the time to brake very lightly.

i have put a challenge on myself to go 100,000 miles on my original brake pads...

 

I expect the Prius brake pads to last the life of the car the way my wife and I drive with the regenerative braking. On our honda CRX and Toyota pickup we have 200k and 150k miles repectively all on original brake pads.
