I just installed the Ultimate Lockpick 3+ and have some questions.
The installation was fairly straight forward, but I have some extra cables. Picture of the leftover cables is here: Picasa Web Albums - Hal - PriusModUltim...

Maybe I didn't understand the Coastal Technologies website information, but I thought I was supposed to be able to insert and play a DVD with the modification. I have a 2006 Prius with package 8. My intention was to be able to create MP3 DVDs with up to 4 gigabytes of music or audio books on them.
Everything in the modification is working, except the DVD portion. I get a DVD menu but DVDs do not play. :(
Did I misunderstand the capabilities or is something amiss?

All pictures from my mod are here.

    Hmm. :confused::eek:

The Coastal Tech Mod gives you an Audio/Video Input. That is why those cables are there, so you can connect a new Video and Audio Source like a DVD player. The method it uses to give you the ability to add A/V input is to fake the MFD into thinking a DVD player is attached. ;)

The Lockpick3+ allows you to use Nav and phone functions while in motion, and gives you the A/V inputs to the MFD/Stereo.

jhall is right ... the connections you have left over are the RCA cables that allow you to connect an external audio (Red / White) and/or video (Yellow) device. I use my Zune with the video output through the headphone jack, you could also use any portable DVD player with it's included RCA cables.

So even with the lockpick hax thing the Prius DVD system will NOT play dvd's by itself?

There is an optional DVD based Nav system and a CD changer for the Prius.

The Lockpick doesn't allow you to play standard DVDs through the Nav, and the CD Changer obviously doesn't allow DVDs.

Yeah, Coastal's website is kind of vague and many have reported issues with their service, but if you read their website thoroughly and know what the product is before you buy it, it works nicely and most people (like myself) have reporterd that they ship fast once you place your order.

Also, be warned, there are a few quirks with the product since it is essentially a hack:

    1. There is a DVD Hint window that you have to press OK on each time you use the video that is kind of annoying.
    2. While the Nav and Phone functions work as advertised, I don't know of any way you can browse MP3 CD folders while in motion.

I have a video iPOD that I want to use with my Lockpick. Did you buy a cable at Radio Shack (or another store) that converts the headphone out from your Zune (3.5mm) to a Y-cable with video (yellow) and audio (red-white) RCA's? I am assuming that is what I need to purchase.

I'd be interested to know this too.

I should have added this to my post: I know that Apple sells an av cable that is a 3.5mm to RCA (video and audio), but I was thinking that something local might work just as well and be less expensive.

The nicest way would be to get something like the Dice or VAIS so you can have it charge as well as have the control for audio on the MFD (although you would still have to control the video from the iPod.

You could just buy a cable like this if you just want the A/V and still control from the iPod: RadioShack.com - Portable Music: Accessories: iPod accessories: Accurian A/V Cable for iPod® video

Note: The video from the iPod for all of these products will only work on video iPod Generation 5.5 and lower. The newer video iPods (iPhone, Touch, Classic, etc.) require an authentication chip to display video. If you have a newer iPod make sure the accessory you use to get the A/V is compatible.

I have the 60gb video iPOD classic (about a year old). I will try this cable and see if it works. It is half the price of the Apple one, so hopefully it does work!

I had a MiniDV camera that came with an RCA cable that worked in the Zune. What you are looking for is a 3.5mm jack with 3 colored stripes on it, instead of the standard 2 for headphones. One of stripes is the contact for left channel, one for right, and the third is for video.

That said, the Zune and old style video iPods do not require any kind of proprietary cable. The newer iPods require a specific Apple cable from what I have read/understood. Check on your model of iPod and the required cables before spending time/money on something that won't work.

If it's a year old, then it's not an iPod Classic. It's probably a 5th Generation iPod video. The Classic hasn't been out that long.

I installed the LP and have everything up and working. I do have that same problem with the "DVD hint" popup window on the MFD. The directions say that it will go away, but it does not unless you hit the "OK" button onscreen.

Also, I am searching elsewhere on the Apple site, but would anyone happen to know if there is a way to have the iPOD always send data as video data? Right now, it sends videos and movies. What I would like to do is send the onscreen iPOD picture of the song name, album cover, time remaining to the MFD instead of only having it displayed only on the iPOD. I am thinking that they never intended it to do that, so that is why there is no display option for audio.

Thought I would ask in case anyone else has tried that.

There is no way to have the iPod send it's display image out the video cable.

You are correct - it was not designed that way.

There might now be a way to put the iPod GUI on the MFD, but maybe using the DLO HomeDock Deluxe could be a possible substitute. The dock has a pretty nice interface, uses an IR remote to navigate, and charges the iPod. You'd have to find a way to power the unit, but I think that's a minor hurdle (DC inverter, AC adapter, or hardwire if you're capable?).

For what it's worth, you do not need any "proprietary" video cable to send video out of your iPod. Any standard camcorder cable will do. All Apple does is switch which cable the video signal goes down, specifically:
    • Plug the red RCA plug into your TV's yellow RCA jack.
    • Plug the yellow RCA plug into your TV's white RCA jack.
    • Plug the white RCA plug into your TV's red RCA jack.
You also need to set your "TV out" setting, (under Video) to YES. This will send the signal out rather than displaying on the iPod screen.

No, because the Prius doesn't have a DVD player. It is only a CD player. They are two different things.

So are you basically saying that I just wasted all this cash on a lockpick 3 and it won't work with the iphone? I haven't installed my lockpick yet. I plan to do that tonight. But I sure would hate it if I plugged everything in just to find out that my iphone's not compatible. What 'authentication chip' is this you're talking about? Where do I get it?

Nevermind, I did some basic research on the really lame restriction apple has placed on ipods. It hasn't been confirmed that they've locked the iphones from video output capability. I checked the settings in my iphone, and it doesn't seem to be locked. I'm going to test this tonight if I can.
