At what mileage does the 2001 typically need the brakes changed? We just hit 35k and that's when I start thinking about brakes on a normal car, but with the Prius I'm wondering if they couldn't go a little farther. I like doing maintenance myself as well. The brakes on the Prius offer any problems for the weekend mechanic? I might pull a wheel off this weekend to check out the status of the brakes and possibly rotate tires.
I'm sure you're aware that regenerative braking extends the life of the friction brakes. Few Prius have gone far enough to need brake work!. Based on reading some of those service logs, I'd guess front pads might last about 100 k miles, discs resurfaced at 200k, new rear shoes at 150k and rear drums at ??? With the wheels off there is much fun to be had, like inspecting the front suspension/steeering for wear, and looking into the rear drums (assuming the fronts are chocked and the parking brake is not set). Yep that's what I've read, but wondering if it were really true.. Still might look. Have to rotate tires as well.
I believe that the Vancouver Yellow Cab went 85,000 Km's on the front pads and 150,000 on the rear shoes. Never hurts to check and on disk brakes it's really easy, and when you change them it's time to pull the drum and look at the rears. Every time you rotate the tires have a look at the pads.
