I know a few folks have Verizon service and have gotten a Motorola v710. It works just barely. There is a software revision underway. As far as I can tell Verizon has gutted the 710 ( a fairly nice phone with potential) to preserve their income flow from Pictures, wallpaper, ring tones and games. I would like to propose that everyone who has one of these phone, a) leave Verizon if thay can and tell them why or b complain loudly and often. I suspect that now is time to put on the pressure. A modest proposal, what say you?

I have the V710. I find it annoying that it won't properly communicate with the car through bluetooth (no address book transfer or audible ring). But where I live, I don't have much choice. Verizon has the coverage. Cingular is ok, but has more dead spots and the sound is worse.

Also, from what I hear, Verizon is not very happy with Motorola over this phone. Quality issues. I guess the camera (that useless add on on the front) produces poor quality pictures (big surprise there) because of a defect in manufacturing. That will cost Verizon money in lost photo income. I hear Verizon is recalling them, or has stopped selling them. Unconfirmed rumor......

I'm holding on to my V710 until I can get something better from Verizon. But I'm not holding my breath. Right now it's my only option if I want to use it with the prius.

A solution to our problems may be on the way. The cell phone chat rooms are reporting Verizon has a fix out for the V710 phone that may solve the interoperability problem with the Prius. It is being tested now. I saw no indication of when or if this fix is going to be made available to the general public.

I have herd the recall issue with the camera has to do with the fact that Verizon wants to plug a hole in the "security" of the phone. Security is there code word for loss of revenue. In this case it is possible to transfer pictures via the memory card. This can not happen! :cussing: because then Verizon would loose income. I am one who does not care about the camera. I have a camera and it is better. I don't play games on my phone. I have a computer and it does that better and on a 17" flat panel. Varied ring tones have no interest for me. Voice actuated dial and having access to my phone book that is important.

I've been following the v710 discussion on HF very closely. I'm not yet willing to try the SD flash and will wait to see what VZW officially releases. I'm hoping that it'll fix our issues with the Prius.

For now, the complaining is on hold till the firmware release is done. After that we can start ranting again..

I think the time has come for us to call toyota to get rid of the speed sensing phone and navi system. I'm already agreeing to not hold them responsible for anything (when pressing 'I agree'). I want to be able to enter phone numbers and addresses if i want to! Even if I have a passenger, they can't do it! How about the Prius allowing input while moving if there is a passenger? It can tell by the weight sensor on the seat. Also Wth is with not being able to see the incoming caller ID number when moving? I end up taking my phone outa my pocket to see who's calling then I decide to pick up or not. I thikn that makes things more dangerous.

The time to bitch at Verizon is on hold for now, but now is the time to take a bite out of Toyota.

The SD flash and the OR flash are different, aren't they?

OTOH, I suppose you have to take your chances doing either.

the 0R, is the beta flash expected to be released by Verizon

The SD flash is the 0R flash, modified by an HF use, Superdavex

The SD flash reenables some features that the 0R flash takes away such as file copy from the TF card

both flashes as of yet seem to be unable to do BT file transfer

It is also unclear whether phonebook transfer to the Prius is possible under either of these two flashes as I don't think anyone who has done the flash also owns a Prius.

If the 0R flash releases as is, then I may go ahead and try the SD flash
either way, I'll report back one VZW officially releases 0R or similar variant.

A recent post on HoFo from a V710 user with a Prius indicates that it doesn't work even with the new flash.

I phoned Motorola on Tuesday to ask about a fix for the V710 and the Prius, and was told that it was all Verizon's fault, that they had disabled the transfer feature that would allow the phone book to be put into the Prius (or, presumably, any other Bluetooth device.)
On earlier calls, Verizon had blamed Motorola for the phone transfer not working.
Today I posed a strongly-worded query to Verizon to see if it was true that Verizon had disabled the phone-book transfer feature.

hopefully some change will come in the near future. HoFo V710 users in California has started a class action lawsuit against Verizon for unclear advertising practices of the V710's bluetooth implementation.

I believe the bluetooth protocol needed for us Prius owners is the Object Push Protocal (OPP). I look forward to having Verizon fry for this. Its still up in the air though if the suit will carry enough merit.

I for one became aware of the limitations of the phone's bluetooth after purchase. I could have returned it within the 15 day timeframe, However I made quite a few calls to both VZW and Moto and they both assured me that a new firmware release due at the end of 04 would correct the problem. Here we are in 05 with nothing changed. For more info see

There are two thread regarding the lawsuit. I find this whole process quite intriguing. :)

Yessir! In fact, I have two of them. After I switched back to VZW from Sprint, I was left with pretty much of a defunct Treo 300 (screen was messed up and battery life down to about nil) so I wound up using my millennium old Startac. When I discovered I was able to upgrade to a V710 for $150, I decided to do it. However, House Rule #5 applied:

House Rule 5: When one spouse gets a new cellular phone, the other spouse is entitled to a new cellular phone of equal, or better, functionality and quality.

    :)

i had to do a house rule 5 too!

Maybe this is a temp solution.
I get all my contact into outlook on my laptop.
I get a bluetooth adapter for my laptop (you guys may have it built in)
I bring my laptop to the car and transfer the phonebook from outlook?

I'm not sure if this will work, as I don't have a bluetooth adapter (yet).
Any speculation as to whether this will work?

    There is a writeup here:
    http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Prius-2G/

It involves both a phone and a laptop. Since I don't yet have a BT phone, I tried to only transfer contacts from my laptops to the Prius. I have two laptops, both with built-in BT. Both laptops see the Prius, but both say that there are no services for it. Therefore I was unable to transfer contacts from Outlook to the car.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong... Maybe someone else has a different experience...

could it be possible to use a sony ericsson t637 to load phone numbers into the Prius then use the v710 for normal use? It seems like a cheap fix as you can get the ericsson on ebay at a low cost. I have a mac and nothing seems to work.

That's what I'm in the process of doing but I wound up buying a used T68i.

I looked at all of the phones that purportedly work 100% with the Prius and found that the Sony T68i and the Siemens S56 were the two lowest priced on ebay. The T637s I saw all seemed to be going for well over $100.
