Oh, you still pay the full amount for the ticket (at least in CA), and maybe even an added "processing fee" for using traffic school. It makes your record on this hidden, but it's true that it works to prevent your insurance from going up.

Both my wife and I have attended traffic school. I was able to do it online, which cost a mere $14 and could space it out over several weeks. My wife had to go to an actual school, which cost $35. She had a choice between 2 4-hour classes or 1 8-hour class.

My father is a volunteer at the Aerospace Museum in San Diego, CA and he saw astronaut Wally [SIZE=-1]Schirra there several times. He told me that Wally told him about the time he had to take traffic school.

If all the reasons already given are not overwhelmingly substantial enough, do you have an idea of what you are doing to your traction pack? While Toyota is better than Honda on keeping a proper SoC, going 93mph with hurricane force wind resistance and passing is a long and sustained hit on your batteries...aging them a lot....replacing them makes your ticket cheap.

 

You know, it's funny... I used to buzz around everywhere in my Del Sol. Not more than 5-10mph over, but it was still speeding. Almost a year after I bought my Prius I still find myself looking down real fast, all paranoid like, when I pass an officer, only to find I'm doing 5 or so under this time. :lol:

 

Why? Because it is 33mph over posted limit? And why 60 mph limit is sane while 90 is not? Who exactly decided that? Any scientific research? Or just a random number remotely linked to long past 70s energy crisis? And somehow it is sane to drive 75 in some places and only 55 in others on the same highway. It's not like it becomes residential street in some places...

I think it is just a cash cow for a county. For the record, I have never had a speeding ticket. But I did drive 130mph in Germany and I do consider 80-90 to be a safe speed in modern cars. 60mph limit is 30 years old, cars are much better and safer now.

 

But our roads aren't.

I'd never drive that fast on any of the roads or freeways around here. Too much deferred maintenance, etc.

The Autobahn in Germany was extremely well-maintained last time I was there. (And was that 130 mph or Kph?)

 

You have got to be kidding me! You don't think we have an energy crisis today?! In the 70's we crossed over from being a producer to an importer of oil. And it was a huge deal. Now 60+% of our oil is imported. Our crisis today is so much bigger than the 70's that it boggles the mind. Pretending all is OK doesn't make it better.

 

130 Mph = 200 km/h approximately. 130 km/h is a middle lane on the autobahn. Slowest is about 90 km/h (about 55mph).

Pretending you can regulate this like a communist government would do by imposing limits does not make it better either. Is it bad to drive 90mph in a Tesla roadster? In a high mpg diesel sport sedan? Oil consumption is regulated by price of gas (see Germany), not by random government imposed consumption limits. Perhaps we should limit size of houses as well - how's about that? Did you know that average 3000 sq ft home heating pollutes like 2 large SUVs?

In Germany people expect you to be travelling fast on an autobahn, but not on a road with a 60mph speed limit. Think the speed limit is there to raise cash? a kind of tax? I try to use a legal form of tax avoidance, I try not to speed. Give it a go, relax, go steady and arrive safer and more relaxed. Think you can drive 34mph over the limit and not get caught? That is crazy and reckless.

Speed limits have nothing to do with communism and everything to do with being set by a democratically elected government. Don't like speed limits so much and you are so passionate about not having to tolerate then my advice is to move to Germany, but do it quick, I hear they are soon to impose "communist" rules.

 

No. Design speed of most US Interstate highways is 90 mph. There are exceptions, where curves and grades exceed design standards, in which case design speed of the affected section is less than 90. The stretch of I-75 in Kentucky, just before it crossed the Ohio River into Ohio is an example.

Speed limits on local highways are theoretically set by local traffic, using 85th percentile speed of actual traffic.

Dismissing speed limits as meaningless is a characteristic of drivers who have less than ideal attitudes toward safety, and have higher accident rates.

Well, maybe. Driving 93mph in a 50-60mph zone while traffic is moving at 50-60 would be pretty reckless. There are certainly times and places where the Mass Pike is cruising along at 80+ regardless of speed limit, and often even with heavy traffic. It can also be pretty easy to get the urge to pass someone who seems to be dawdling even though they're doing 85. MA traffic is pretty intense. Unless there is an accident, its very rarely stop and go like LA. Everyone just packs in tight and goes for it.... I used to drive on RT 3 at rush hour from time to time, damnedest thing I've ever seen. 3 lanes packed solid, cars about 15' apart and everyone is doing 75+mph.

You're smoking crack! 80 is well above avg speed, even on the 65mph part of I-90 west of 128.

But regardless of what the traffic conditions are on a given day, 93 is reckless. Find any set of statistics on the subject and you'll see that above 90mph you're pretty close to 100% chance of a fatality in a collision, and your risk of crash due to speed increases with speed as well.

I used to make excuses for myself speeding as well, but it's just pointless. As much as I like to think I'm a good driver, and knowing that I haven't caused any crashes, I still have to admit that I'm not trained well enough to drive safely at those speeds, I've just been lucky. And the other drivers around me are DEFINITELY not good enough drivers for me to count on them not doing crazy or stupid things while I pass them at 90+.

If you're worried about saving a minute or two on a drive, maybe find other areas of your life to optimize so you're not wasting time that you need to spend driving safely. Like brush your teeth while shaving... or surf porn while taking care of the dog... be creative, just slow down on the roads!

 

Regardless of the speed, going that much faster than the cars around you displays reckless lack of concern for other people on the road around you. Humans do have a limit to their reaction time (yes this is based on science) AND it is simple physics to understand that injuries and fatalities go up dramatically at higher speeds. I would bet in Germany the road is designed for higher speed limits (i.e. softer curves so you can see further ahead) and drivers are likely used to allowing greater following distances to allow for your diminished reaction time. That being said I feel safest going with the flow of traffic around me even if it is a little above or below the speed limit.

100% agree. I never said someone should be cutting in and changing lanes all the time. All I said that the number is typically random. For example, I know two lane twisty road without divider with 50mph speed limit. 6 lane straight highway with divider has 60mph speed limit. Besides, it is the same limit day or night, rain or shine, fog, snow or ice. This does not make much sense to me.

No, they simply don't issue drivers license to everyone who is breathing.

And then again - no one is forces YOU drive faster. Take slower lane and be happy. Why are you so concerned about other people? I personally oppose random regulation of other people lives
