I finally filled up last night and got some great numbers. I went 1056.5 miles(NEW PR!) and pumped in 12.162 gallons(11.9 gallon tank ) for 86.9 mpg.(NEW PR!)

 

The weird thing was that the MFD was reading way low; 84.0. :huh:

Just got my Prius a week ago and love it. I am on my first tank (filled by the dealer). My MPG started low (~22) and during the week it has been creeping up to ~40. Does this happen every time you reset the MPG gage? Do people in this forum reset the MPG gage every time you fill the tank? Is it better to accelerate slowly to speed (when possible) and then try to coast as much as possible, or is it better to accelerate fast to reach cruising speed? Today i put air in my tires up to 40 PSI, oddly the dealer gave the car with less air than the decal recommends (~25 PSI)... Hope I can get up to the numbers I have read in this forum (I know that they should improve after breaking in the engine). Also, I notice that my worst milage is during the first 5 minutes (~20 MPG). Is this because the engine is heating? (Here in Tampa the temps are about 70F). From some of the PICTS in the forum I see that some folks get 40MPG during the first 5 minutes (what's the trick?). Sorry if this post does not fit in this forum...

 

Woo Hoo! 2 weeks old and I had my first petrol fill! Central computer was telling me 4.5 l/100lm which was a bit low; I actually did 958.5 km with a 45 litre refill (4.67l/100km). Still impressed for a first go though, especially since it included a nice highway run back from Phillip Island in last weekend's massive wind. It felt like a head wind all the way home. On top of that I got a nice 20km after the "add Fuel" warning came up.

That's like 50.59 mpg for a novice.

Ther younger Prius brother was VERY jealous when I told him...

 

First week

Just took delivery of my new 2008 Prius last Tuesday. Drove 342 miles and just had to fill it up (6.22 gal) to see if the computer matched the actual mileage even though I was only just over half a tank used.

The computer said I was getting 52.6 but actual came in at 54.98. Wahoo! I'm impressed. Not even broke in and getting this kind of mileage without even trying!

I doubt I will ever see numbers like some of those here are getting, but I will be estatic if I can just maintain readings in the 50's.

I'm about to take delivery of my new '08 Prius this Thursday. I am climbing the drapes like a cat, ready to start enjoying the car and its fuel economy.

 

61.2 Hwy 54.7 city. 3400 miles on odometer.

 

I just purchased 08 Prius yesterday. Today was driving around (30 miles on car) and was starting to average 30mpg city. Will this number go up the more miles I put on?

 

When the temps are above 50F or so, I can get close to 65 MPG gauge and low 60's real world. We've had some cold weather lately combined with crappy E10 Gasoline blended in this time of year and I was getting low 50's real-world. When the outside temp dips below freezing, not only does the engine have to idle more to keep warm, but the rolling resistance seems higher even in glide. I've eliminated tire pressure and other obvious causes and I'm thinking that the axle grease and other lubes have higher viscosity at these lower temps.

 

I can't brag about this. The best we have ever gotten was just yesterday, from a trip to Las Vegas. We have never ever gotten to 50mpg. We have our tires at 42/40. I P+G whenever possible. I use Mobil 1 5-30. Just got the oil +filter changed at 10,000mi. We can't even come close to the charts that some of the guys on this net posted, for example:
CC will give you: 53mph = 60mpg
55mph = 54.5mpg
58mph = 47mpg.
We have set our CC and tested these speeds at nighttime on our local freeway [as to not irritate other drivers] Only when going down hill slightly, that we can get those figures. When we go to San Diego, a 90mile trip, I can set the CC at 55, and we will barely get 51mpg. The only explanation I can give: I have oversized wheels and tires: 205 50 R16, Bridgestone Potenza. Even when I factor in 1.6% I cannot get 50mpg. Our lifetime of 46.4 becomes 47.18. Just believe me--neither of us have a lead foot, We coast to stop lights waayyyy in advance. We practice everything in the P+G chart by Dr Efusco and we also maintain our vehicle as per instructions. However, we noticed a slight improvement at the 10,000 mile mark. It was so noticeable, it was scary. The mechanics of the car worked so much better. EG, the gas pedal was more responsive with P+G. The cruising CC mpg went up at least 1mpg more. The engine even sounded more smooth at fwy speeds [with the windows closed], and no a/c.

 

To Priusgirl and other's who've gotten their new Prius - congratulations! You'll love driving it, and love talking to all those people that come up to you in parking lots and at the gas stations to ask you about it!
As for getting those good mpg figures, in addition to doing everything else that's recommended in these forums, you'll also have to be patient. Although they don't talk about "breaking in" the engine these days, that process is a fact of life. It'll take several thousand miles before the ICE achieves optimal fuel efficiency.
Eventually you should start seeing figures like these!
