Last time I looked was on my way home from work. I have been home about 6 hours now.
I had about 860km on the tank at 4.3L/100km, there are 2 squares on the fuel gauge. I'll fill up in the morning.

My consumption has been 4.3L/100km on all but the first tank which was 4.6L/100km and on a 650km round trip on highways @ 5.2L/100km, most of this was at 110 - 115km/h.

My wife has a very short (5 mi.) commute to work on local streets. The best we have seen was 49 mpg on a recent trip to St. Louis over the summer.

How do you get MPG like that?

Im in Florida where the temperature outside has been perfect. Its 77 outside right now, so Im not running the heat or a/c much or at all. For this tank Im at 51.0.

I plan my trips very carefully to avoid traffic and peak travel times. I also live out in the country where there is little traffic so I can go as slow as I want. I use Pulse & Glide almost exclusively. Tires have been at 60 psi or above since it was new with no handling/wear etc. problems. Top speed is usually 40 mph or under unless a hill is big enough to take me over 40. If a hill is that big, I usually throw it in neutral to keep the engine off until I'm back on the level. I also time traffic lights/conditions to avoid stopping if at all possible. When I do have to take off from a stop, I accelerate with no assist as much as possible. These are not always easy things to do but they obviously work so I'm going to stick with them for now.

Thanks for the reply. Is there a "sticky" on this site that explains techniques like pulse and glide? I assume you watch the MFD to know when to give her some juice and when to ease off?

Basically what I do is gently pulse up to, for example, 40 mph then go into a glide(no arrows on the screen) and go down to 25-30 mph then rinse and repeat.

I've had my '08 Prius for 1 week now; 372 miles and 46.9mpg average. As it's been cold here in NE, I'm hoping this is the lowest I'll get. My commute is 17 miles each way, all backroads. I'm getting to know well my pulse and glide areas!

    Cool! I'll try that.

Since your driving style uses the battery more, will that shorten its life?

Do you reset your MPG with each tankful, or leave it alone when filling up? Wouldn't you get a lifetime MPG if you did not reset with each tank?

Actually, I don't use the battery any more this way. I use the engine to get up to my top speed and try not to use any assist(yellow arrows from the battery or to the wheels) if at all possible. And yes, if I did use the battery more, it could very well shorten it's life.

I reset after each fill up but I keep track of my mileage on at least 4 different places online to keep track of my lifetime MPG.
