Read it and weep... An appeal court in Saudi Arabia has doubled the number of lashes and added a jail sentence as punishment for a woman who was gang-raped.

And our respective governments still trade with these countries. What could be such a powerful commodity? I doubt Jesus could help, he died 2000 years ago unless you mean Jesus Jones the band, but I'm not so sure they would be into that style of music. It isn't religion it's a moral and respect thing, don't judges in Saudi have mothers? In the last story I read about this, the man said to the girl he was her uncle or she thought he was her uncle. He was a person who was close to her family at least.

She's lucky shes not from our other ally Pakistan. In Pakistan when a woman is raped ,her male relatives would be honor bound to murder her.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(mojo @ Nov 16 2007, 07:15 AM) </div> Wow, with friends like these...
Hey, that's how it goes over there. The women are required to cover themselves from head to toe, even to obscure body contours, lest they temp the poor unfortunate men who just can't control themselves. If nothing else, this should show us the stupidity of the phrase: 'The enemy of my enemy is my friend.' Ain't necessarily so.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(TimBikes @ Nov 15 2007, 02:51 PM) </div> This area is one that gives me a huge brain ache.... Perhaps one of the greatest Human Rights violations, and one that gets NO PRESS, NO ATTENTION FROM LIBERALS/FEMANISTS - is the treatment of women in Muslim countries like Saudia Arabia. They are treated like property - perhaps not as well since their grass gets to see sunlight unlike their women  . Where are the speaking mouths here? And is this what we want to defend as proper and right? Is it ok for us just to sit back and watch and do or say nothing? Obviously the answer is yes.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(mojo @ Nov 15 2007, 05:45 PM) </div> Oh come on now ... you do realize that MANY Muslims no longer think that way.

Perhaps no press from the corporate/non-liberal mainstream U.S. news machine but hardly no press from those dastardly liberals and feminists. Remember: google is your friend. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(qbee42 @ Nov 16 2007, 01:24 PM) </div> Wow, You really missed my cynical humor. Even if only 20% of the Muslim Country's populations had this mind set, the numbers would be in the 100's of millions. I guess I better not quit my day job.
my student last summer was from east Africa and practiced Islam... though it was readily apparent he was no fundamentalist. i heard some stories of the things he had seen and it amazed me. women are treated like objects, young girls married off to old men, just scary. i could tell he did not agree with these in principle from our discussions, but i could also see that was the "old and familiar" system to him and the occasional comment would let that show through. i give him a lot of credit, and it was really interesting to see a different perspective on the world. while i'm against just flat-out rejecting something because it's foreign and unfamiliar, these are major human rights violations that i don't think should be supported.
