Hello Everyone, I am getting a new Prius 2008 with Pkg 6 scheduled for this Saturday. The manager I am dealing with appears to have little patience and gets annoyed easily. I am staying put with this dealer since they have a decent deal for my car (Pkg 6+WL+Z1=$26300+tax) and have gone through the pain of swapping the color I wanted with another dealer elsewhere. I checked and test drove my car today and it has 271 miles on it. The dealer tells me that this is due to the driver driving the car on his way back from the swap dealership. I might be looking too much into it, but the distance between the two dealerships is 237 miles and the remaining 40 miles is unaccounted for. Is this higher mileage common? Considering I am paying close to $30K for the car, I was looking forward to a shrink wrapped car  I consider myself to be technical savvy and history has show I push my gadgets to their limits. Therefore I am planning to get the extended Toyota warranty (7yr/100K). Other than that, are they any other recommended warranty (like paint protection+under carraige coating for $900) plans recommended. I am looking to be active here in future and any suggestions for above two requests would be very welcome. Thanks! deeps
> the remaining 40 miles is unaccounted for. Is this higher mileage common? Don't know if it's common, but I can see legit purposes like checking if everything works or familiarizing staff. >I consider myself to be technical savvy and history has show I push my gadgets to their limits. Heh. We want pics. >are they any other recommended warranty (like paint protection+under carraige coating for $900) >plans recommended. I'm suspicious of those dealer add ons. If this is an anti-rust coating it needs to be put on at the factory or it won't work. If this is a sound coating it could work.
>Don't know if it's common, but I can see legit purposes like checking if everything works or familiarizing staff. I have read messages where the cars have almost to zero mileage when the deal is closed. So this higher mileage surprises me and I am being cautious. Do you think I should insist on an explanation from the dealer? >Heh. We want pics. Let me get my hands on the car >I'm suspicious of those dealer add ons. If this is an anti-rust coating it needs to be put on at the factory or it won't work. If this is a sound coating it could work. There is an undercarriage coating which is supposed to act as sound dampening and also gives warranty against paint chipping or loss of color. Under normal driving conditions does the Prius color maintain similar to other cars? I read somewhere that Prius early models were prone to easy paint chip-off. How true is this?
Don't waste money on any add-on junk, including an extended warranty. Anyone who can't afford to pay for a (low-probability) big repair can't really afford to buy a new car. 40 extra miles is a little high but not ridiculous. Your choice whether you want to blow off this deal and wait for another. Take the delivery checklist with you to help you decide: http://www.vfaq.net/docs/pickup_checklist.html
YEa.. for me that sounds a bit high. But then again, depends on how many people test drove it prior to you getting it as well i think, unless i missed something in your post. i got lucky and had only 5 miles on my prius before i bought it 2 weeks ago. now i myslef put almost 500 miles already!
Mine hadn't even been through dealer prep yet; it had three miles on the odometer, six after the test drive. Just me, but I wouldn't buy a new car with 271 miles on it.
flydeep, I had 11 miles on my Prii when I got it. I would not worry about the unaccounted milage on your vehicle as the 3 year new car warranty will cover any problems that crop up. You can get the extended 7 year warranty here on PC for $990 which I'm sure is less than your Dealer is offering. Also, do to the shape of the Prius front-end (the hood, front bumper and L/R 1/4 panels), you WILL experience numerous small chips in the paint on your new Prii. And with the white primer paint that Toyota uses, they will stand out against the top coating. From what I have read from other PC members, the coating protection that Toyota offers doesn't make that much difference in stopping the chipping from occuring from bugs and gravel impacts. Leather and clear vinyl bras have been suggested for use to stop the chipping on the front end of the Prius. You can use the search feature here on PC and determine from the threads if you want to pursue using a bra or not on your new Prii. Reviewing the new car delivery check list is an excellent idea to assertain that your Dealer has covered all of the bases before turning over the car. Good Luck and enjoy you car !!!! Slide

But i thought 160 was alot.
It could also be one of the cars chosen at random for a test drive at the factory. In Kentucky 160 Camry's a day are chosen at random for a test drive, they said it puts 37mi. on the car. I'm sure the factory where the Prii are made have something similar in place.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(kenmce @ Nov 7 2007, 06:21 PM) </div> 40 miles sounds like test drive miles to me. Every new car I've ever bought has had anywhere from 12 - 50 miles on it at time of purchase...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(patsparks @ Nov 8 2007, 05:39 AM) </div> I agree with patsparks. I've purchased my new vehicles with anywhere from 1-300 miles on them, and it never made a difference in the long run. I wouldn't stress over it if it was me, and I'd just enjoy my new ride
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Woodcote @ Nov 8 2007, 10:08 AM) </div> Our Prius is a month old on the 9th. When my wife and I went in and test drove one then we picked out the color, Our sales person took a $400 deposit from us and we went home and waited for 4 days then she called back and told us that she found one that was a Seaside Pearl-2008-Package #5, but she also told us it would have about 234 miles on it as it was at a dealer that far away, well when we got it it had 262 miles on it. The sales lady told us that it would be a little better with some miles on it as it gives the battery some time to fully charge up. (Ha Ha) Bob/Sharon
cant really say that i see what the concern is about. using mapquest to determine that its 237 miles means they followed your route and then joyrided another 40 miles?? is that what you think?? not sure i can follow that. long drive without any stops of any kind i think...ya... hmmm...i guess a young guy... big bladder... sure it could be done. now if they sold the car as new. you can add the starting mileage to your warrantee in most states. never know, if you have a breakdown at 100, 276 miles... might come in handy to see if it applies to your area
Most of the dealers use old retired guys for their dealer swaps LOL. Still might be going 80mph however cause the numbers might be a little blurry.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(paprius4030 @ Nov 8 2007, 11:50 AM) </div> Well, thats exactly what I was told, "we use retired drivers who drive carefully and know what they are doing". I have seen some fleet drivers who drive like there is no tomorrow and thats what bothers me. Based on the user feedback I have received here, I am seriously considering giving the benefit of doubt to the dealer and going ahead with the purchase
Yeah I think you'll be happy you went ahead with it. When I sold cars we did alot of dealer swaps, some pretty long distance, because the customer wanted something in particular, not easily found, we never had a problem.
i think after a few thousand miles, you will realize how good of an idea it was to buy a Prius and those few miles wont even be a distant memory. enjoy!!
