I've been thinking for the last several months that I'd like to replace my current car with a hybrid, and decided to go with the Prius. I called around the area, and found a dealership with one in stock, and a second dealership that is closer, and with a slightly lower price, that is going to see if he can get the car I want in the next couple of days. I've been planning for this for some time now, and will be paying cash for it, but I want to be sure I get a reasonable price without unnecessary extras. I'm being quoted between $26,100 and $26,600 for the 2008 with package #5 and fabric interior. I'm not much of a negotiator, and that seems to be close to the MSRP in my area. My question is, what sorts of accessories, if any, and what sort of extended warranty are most people getting with this car? Any help would be much appreciated--I've been learning a lot about the car and how to care for it here!

I picked up my Prius on Friday from Cincinnati. I could not get it in the color I wanted (pine mica green).
I wanted the touring edition, little more difficult to get. I got instead classic silver touring Prius with package 3.
I purchased through Costco buying service. MSRP 26.4 K. I paid 25.2 with bumper appliqué and lousy carpeted floor mats.
I already ordered some from Prius chat stores.

I'm about a 1 month old owner, and went with package #2 08. fabric interior, and managed $24,400 out the door. Taxes, dealer fees, destination, etc etc etc, whatever. Everything inclusive, that was out the door. I had to really wheel-and-deal to get that too. So, if that price you are stating is the out-the-door price, thats not too bad, i dont think.

There are additional registration fees on top of that price, but one of the dealerships told me that is $598. So I am expecting to pay right around $27,000 in total, and then a bit more if I do the extended warranty. I haven't generally done that in the past, but my inclination is to get it for this car. I think that's just because it's newer technology and therefore a bit of an unknown--but at the same time, it certainly seems that many people here have driven their Prii for several years without major problems (and reliability seems to be outstanding).

So many things to think about...hopefully I won't have to deal with a new car purchase for at least 8-10 years after this, though (unless this proves to be a stepping stone on the way to an EV or some other car that can use renewable energy)!

Start at offering the dealer $500 over invoice(they would jump at that for most cars) and see how close to that you can get it for. Politely decline the extended warranty and get it here to save yourself a bunch of money and help support Prius Chat.

Thanks for that, paprius4030! I hadn't thought to look for an extended warranty from external sources--wasn't aware you could get it if you didn't buy it with the car. I will definitely do that.

I'd highly recommend contacting the dealer's Internet Sales Manager either by email or phone and ask for their best price. The internet sales team offered me $1500 off MSRP right away and I settled on $2000 off with just a little negotiating.

In my experience dealing with the internet sales team has been very easy and almost enjoyable way of purchasing a new vehicle.

See Consumer Reports online or at your friendly neighborhood library (the April issue) for car buying advice. I did all my shopping by phone, email and fax. It saved me money, time and bother. But *do* take a test drive before buying. A few people can't stand the car seats.

An extended warranty is a waste of money. Buy a 6 or 12 month bank CD instead and pocket the interest. If one can't afford to cover the cost of an unlikely big repair then that is evidence that one really can't afford to buy a new car.

I paid $26k for mine including tax, tags, title, dealer prep, etc. Same package as the one the OP listed.

I got the extended warranty (bumped to 100K miles), but only because they provided me a money back guarantee. If I don't use the warranty, I get the money back (minus a $45 processing fee). That warranty is normally even more expensive than the "normal" extended warranty, but they offered it to me at the same price. I wouldn't have bothered if not for that.

Earl Stewart. Great dealership. I shopped around, and I got the best customer service and best price at Earl Stewart. A wonderful dealership. I was quoted over $2000 more at Toyota of Palm Beach, and the salespeople there just didnt seem to care at all. They were oblivious. They also only had 3 prii on the lot, whereas Earl Stewart had an entire floor of them in their garage. The people there tell me that outside of California, they are the #1 prius dealership (outside of CA)... This car is all over the roads here in the palm beach/west palm beach area.

I think priuschat has a poster who is a master tech that works there, too.

Strange replying to my own post, but wow, this past Thanksgiving week, I went to a Publix in the Jupiter FL area, and parked my Prius, and there were 3 others in the same lot, all looked 2004+ design. I had no idea the car was this popular. There were maybe 40 cars at most in the lot. once i parked mine that made for a 10% presence. Never seen that kinda presence with any other car.

    Extended Warranty Question

Hi all. I've only just put a deposit down on my Prius so I've got a long wait and am mulling over the extended warranty idea. I plan to have it a long time but I've recently retired and don't need to use it for work each day, etc. so time will probably accumulate rather than mileage for me. I'd like the protection for those really expensive items but am not sure about how to factor all this in.

What's the best way to shop for different extended warranties?

I see one advertised on this site for $900. Anyone looked into that?

Any ideas/suggestions/etc. would be greatly appreciated. I've done a lot of research online and see comments for and against...now, that really helps ! :)
