I have a friend throwing a halloween costume party and need a costume. when we were in high school, with my friends (who will be at this party) we people and objects of a more abstract nature like orange barrels and the president's secret service (protecting the school SGA president). In context these were unusual outstanding costumes.

some of my ideas this year included Lisa Nowak (the crazy astronaut) and Abe Lincoln and the beaver from the Rozerem commercials. But my best idea so far is that woman in the trunk. For you people that do not watch Mad Money, that is that now ubiquitous woman's voice that comes out of the GPS navigation systems.

I need help visualizing what this abstract thing would look like in a costume. Any suggestions ? What would "Jill" look like?

Is "Jill" a travel agent, an AAA employee, maybe a gas station attendant? I think the costume has lots of map pages attached to it and cardboard signs that have arrows and say "in a quarter mile, Right Turn." Maybe the costume looks like a car with a shoe hanging out of the trunk.

My personal favorite costume is, a piece of gum stuck under a table.

My favorite costume is to come as everyone else.

Get a piece of two way mirror and glue it to a swim mask. Then wear black long sleeved turtleneck, ski mask, gloves and pants. Put on "Mirror Face" mask and Voilá. Everyone one you look at will see themselves. It really creeps people out. I only wore this costume once. After 20 min. the host asked if I wouldn't mind taking it off, people were too creeped out.

I get a friend of mine to get on my back and I give her a piggy back ride to the party. If anyone asks what I am dressed as I tell them I'm a teenage mutant ninja turtle. They always ask how I work that out so I introduce my friend ...

I like the "one night stand" idea. I had a friend do it and it was a huge hit! So basically you make a table, attach it with suspenders or something like it & add a light. ha-ha One nightstand :)

If you go as Jill, make sure you have a coin to toss for making route decisions. I'm pretty sure that's how she does it.

One of my favorites is to go as a serial killer. Wear a ski mask, carry a signle serving box of some breakfeast food with a knife stuck through it. OK maybe is should be cerial killer...

Best costume I ever saw: a woman I know is very tall and thin. I don't know where she got the hat, but her entire costume was the hat, and three very thin lines painted at each side of her mouth. And her normal every-day clothing. And she was a dead ringer for The Cat In The Hat.

    jmann,
are you seriously trying to dress as the NAV lady? I would think that you would dress all in one color, nothing flashy, and speak in a monotone. When someone asks a question, you can answer them straight away or give the response, "that request is not available on this screen" or perhaps, "your request was not clear; please repeat the request" (or whatever that one is).

Maybe you could have a big "push to talk" button on your chest and only respond to sentences spoken after someone pushed the button.

My favorite costume was when I attended a party at my own college house dressed normally. I was wearing no costume whatsoever. However, I had died my hair and done my eyebrows and eye lashes. In essence, I attended as a brunette. For those who know me, you know that's a huge change. In fact, because I intentionally didn't speak much at all, it was a very long time before anyone realized it was me. Because it was my house, I could hear people asking if I was going to make it to the party and where I was. :D

The Voice of the Prius --Jill, in the USA only, isn't it?-- is a *great* idea for a costume!!!

I'm thinking this is actually a couples thing, like Tony suggested.

The "driver" could simply be holding a steering wheel.

It could go on and on in this manner...where Jill never does the right thing...just like in real life!!
    [laughing]

Actually, sometimes I get my passengers in on it, just to see who can make the thing work reliably. One of my girlfriends has excellent diction and Jill works for her, every time.

It's weird...as the evening progresses, I seem to lose my taste.

Someone would ask, "what's your costume" and you could reply, "Now displaying Post Office icons."

I'd tend to agree that a simple look would be best for pulling off the "Nav Lady" costume. Since she's only a voice, there's not much you can do. I think the concept is a little too abstract though, unless you're going to a party where everyone drives cars w/ voice activated nav systems and enough people would "get" the joke.

A nice costume I saw last year was a black unitard with blue LEDs stuck on in the shape of the Orion constellation.

And one that a friend is doing this year that cracks me up: Kuato from "Total Recall." He has a 6 month old baby, and has the baby strapped to his chest with a sling, and then puts on a shirt and cargo vest so it covers the baby's lower half. He also made a little bald-cap for the baby that has the icky scraggly hairs that Kuato had. Reference from the movie, if you haven't seen it:

All the costume Ideas are great, 'cept her name is not Jill; it's Lucy -- as in "Lucy, you have a lot of 'splaining' to do."

As it trying to convince Lucy that I really did want to go to Dulles Airport, and Luch kept wanting me to go to downtown DC...
