A while ago, I backed up v4.2 to a single layer disk. I used MagicISO to create the ISO and also to alter it, but I think any program that will create an ISO image and allow you to add/change files in the ISO image will work similarly. (You cannot, however, master a new DVD by copying the files through Windows, even though you can browse the disk and see the files.) The different North America regions each had a different set of files, with the region number in the file name. I deleted the files of all the regions except my own, which made the image small enough to burn onto a single layer disk. When I stuck in the new disk, I got some error message, and I assumed it was a disk media error, so I tried several more brands, +R and -R. In reality, the error was because the new disk was resetting the region, and that region's files weren't on the disk. (I figured this out much later and am leaving out those details, but at that point I tried all the various disks that I thought were media errors, and they all worked. Conclusion: For single layer disks, the Prius DVD works equally with +R and -R.) Not wanting the region-reset problem to ever happen again, I picked the region with the smallest files (Canada I think) and copied those files to every other region. I had to rename the files, of course. And of course I didn't overwrite my own region. The resulting image still fit on a single-layer disk. I even think I was able to leave an adjoining region intact, in case I ever drive over there. I've been using that disk in the car for about three years. Hopefully this gives you a technique to experiment with single-layer disks.
Well, I pretty much am giving up. I ordered some Verbatim DVD-R DL discs from New Egg, and didn't have any success with these either. Booktype was set to -R. Not sure why none of these procedures are working... but this is getting too expensive for me... went through 5 DVD+R DLs and 1 DVD-R DL... Perhaps someone will sell their backups of the 2004 6.1 Prius Nav disc... Here's a link to the Verbatim discs I ordered. $15 worth of DVD-R DL COASTERS Tried duping the version Toyota NAV 6.1 DVD using Verbatim DVD-R DL DVD's, Plextor 755SA, Roxio Easy Media Creator 9.0, Windows Vista, on my Dell Dimension XPS410 and made TWO coasters.... :angry: :angry: Took a suggestion from a forum poster and once I set to record as RAW.... didn't help. Second time RAW "off" and instead of duping from my Samsumg (TSST) burner (top bay) to the Plextor (second bay) I just went from orig. in Plextor to HD, back to Plextor. Both times I verified media after copy and all was okay.... "looking" at dupe vs. original DVD they all had same number of bits and I chose to keep files in original order both times. When I put the dupes in Prius NAV slot and boot up I get error message as so many have been getting. Got only one more DVD-R DL left and don't want to make a third coaster......... What the heck am I doing wrong ?????????????????????????????? Over two years ago, way back on post 21 (top of page 2) of this thread, I said I backed up my NAV DVD without incident. I just hit "go", I said. Well, the copy died a few months ago, after a little over a year and a half of use. Burned copies are not as robust as the OEM DVDs, and this one finally had enough extremes in temperature, I guess. What I found was I could no longer call up an address by entering a phone number. It just would say "disk bad" when I pressed the button to go to the phone number lookup. The disk worked fine otherwise. Well, as I attempted to make my second copy, I finally felt bad for all those who have had trouble! My original copy was made on a DVD duplicator robot that I no longer had easy access to. However, we had some shiny new HP DC7700 PCs at work that had DVD +R DL burners built in. They also have Sonic RecordNow! v7.22 installed. "Let's see if current technology will burn a copy without any extra effort", I said. The software recognized the density of the master. I selected "exact copy", and off it went. My first year-and-a-half old Memorex +R DL died pretty quickly in the burn sequence. My second old blank died when it hit a defect on the disk. As I had originally only bought a 3-pack, I then went and bought some fresh Verbatim +R DLs, and attempted a third burn. The PC almost finished the third burn before dying. Each failure simply said "bad disk, try another", with no further information. At this point I switched PCs. Same exact failure as the last -- the burn almost completed, then failed. The car didn't recognize these burns because the disks were never finalized. I didn't feel like fiddling and experimenting to see if I could make a good disk out of the two blanks that remained. So, I sat back for a couple of months, waiting for the duplicator robot to become available again. Today I got access to it, so I quickly made a copy. The car loves it! I'm back on a backup disk. Total cost ended up around $40, with only a single blank disk remaining. You have to wonder where the breakpoint is between protecting yourself from a bad disk after the warranty expires, and just taking a chance! I'm still more comfortable with my backup, though.
I was going to backup my 6.1 Gen 5 Nav DVD. Best Buy has Verbatim DVD +R DL on sale this week. It is the 2.4 speed. Will these work o.k. as a good backup. Does the backup have to be a certain speed?

That really is a burn speed, and thus is determined by the capabilities of your burner. My second set two years later went onto 8x disks.
Hey, it worked. I got a three pack of Memorex DVD+R DL at Staples. I made an image file of the original using Nero 8. I then set Nero to use DVD-ROM booktype (under Recorder, Choose recorder, Options). Then I burned the image and tried it out. It seems to work fine -- maps show up, I can search for POIs, etc. I have a LiteOn LH-20A1H double-layer drive. The only thing I noticed was that my search region changed; I had to change it back to #3 (Rocky Mountains).

This was asked early in the thread but I saw no replies. Does anyone know which 'map data' files to replace in an image to update to the latest maps?? There are many .kwi files and 3 folders. I want to leave the loading.kwi as is, do all the others change?
