"NEW YORK - Jim Ammons grumbles to himself every time he fills up his Ford Expedition, but he says gas prices would have to almost quadruple to $10 a gallon before he’d ditch his SUV. Still, paying $55 to fill his 20 gallon tank isn’t easy for the information specialist." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21381254/
It costs me nearly $50AU to fill the Prius! That's $44.66US so $55 for an SUV is too cheap! At least with the Prius that lasts me nearly 3 weeks. I was paying $60 to $80AU to fill a 2 litre Camry every 10 to 12 days
Seriously, do you think this guy has really done the calculations? He's not happy paying $55 to fill his 20-gallon tank. If gas were $10/gal he'd be paying $200 to fill the tank. How long would that last for an average commuter? Even at one tank per week - does the typical family even HAVE $800 in the budget for gasoline each month? We could probably squeeze an extra $800 from our budget, but we'd be feeling the pinch in lots of areas.
right now we have 3 cars, only drive two of them, but will soon be letting the lesser of the two we use to father in law to drive instead of his 15 mpg Ford pickup and going EV. yes the EV is a niche car with all the well known drawbacks, speed, range, etc but im guessing it will work out for us just fine, and overall, the gas savings should be slight, was paying $30 a week for car going away, that will be replaced by an EV that should get about 2 cents per mile instead of the 9 cents per mile. even with the over 40% increase in electricity rates, (we recently lost a HUGE subsidy from the Bonneville Power Administration for the hydro power generated in the state of WA) it will still be a big savings especially if it replaces a significant amount of our transportation needs.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(poleikleng @ Oct 20 2007, 05:30 AM) </div> And people wonder why I think that gas is "cheap" today. There's your answer. If people can still afford to drive stupid commute vehicles, then gas is still too cheap.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(darelldd @ Oct 20 2007, 11:51 AM) </div> Or some people just make too much bloody money. For the poor gas is indeed expensive but I find it rather sad that a lot of the people who cannot afford gas STILL buy retarded SUVs or old school Crown Vics and Cadillacs. Wth is wrong with people? If you are poor then buy a used 1992 Civic or '89 CRx.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Stev0 @ Oct 20 2007, 10:53 AM) </div> OMG, that's exactly what I was going to write. Damn you! I want to be the funny clown!
Yeah, sometimes I do wish gas would be taxed last crazy so that it does go to $8-10/gallon. Even w/gas prices at $3.177 on average in my area right now (per http://www.fuelgaugereport.com/CAmetro.asp), I still see insane numbers of monstrosity class SUVs (5000+ lb. ones like Suburbuans, Tahoes, Yukons, Expeditions, Navigators, H2s and Escalades) mostly driven solo and many by soccer moms. Those guys clearly don't care about our dependence on foreign oil, pollution or greenhouse gases along w/other drivers in the event of an accident.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(F8L @ Oct 20 2007, 03:02 PM) </div> ego > smart finance... even in the world of those who can't afford to tip the scales that way. sadly.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(cwerdna @ Oct 20 2007, 12:24 PM) </div> Or more likely, they need a quick way to get rid of "excess" cash that they've.. <cough> accumulated. Seriously, what better way to blow cash than to buy an expensive SUV that sucks the most fuel?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(cwerdna @ Oct 20 2007, 12:24 PM) </div> "Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity". I don't think it's so much that they don't care as much as it is that they're uninformed, or more likely, incapable of comprehending the situation. They're simply just not capable of making a connection between the high price they pay at the pump, and the effect on the economic health of the USA. Go live in an area where the people are far less educated than those in Silicon Valley. You'll see a much higher percentage of full-size SUVs and other gas guzzlers than this area. Children are fascinated by bright shiny objects. We always joke at work that if you see a Hummer in the parking lot, it's most likely owned by an admin or security.
I was one of those {pick one: stupid/uninformed/incapable of understanding/penile deprived/too rich} large SUV drivers as recently as 3 years ago and didn't move from my Expedition to the Prius as my primary vehicle until Oct. of '03. I can tell you that, for me at least, the only monicer that fit out of that list was 'uninformed'. Other than knowing I didn't get good gas mileage I either didn't pay attention to or wasn't very well informed about the energy crisis, fossil fuels, emissions, etc. My experience at the autoinsight community is that even those folks...those with an interest in automobiles...are generally completely uninformed about car emissions ratings. Now, we sit around here talking about this stuff every day...at this point I get hives when I see an unattended car idling in a parking lot, my brow furrows when I see someone with an H2 driving around and my self-rightousness titer peaks at record levels. But some of those H2 drivers are friends of mine. They're bright self-confident people who care about other people...they're not the devil in disguise like some around here would portray them. But yes, I think $10/gallon gas would probably increase the awareness of the crisis to these folks, for me it was just a moment of enlightenment after seeing an article about the 1G Prius... I didn't realize the alligator pit I was stepping into when I got it, but has been enlightening.
BTW, Evan - I'm about to come clean about what I thought about EVs before becoming embroiled in them as well. You've inspired me. I'm gonna start a new thread though. I've derailed too many others.
Well, well. I shall declare, I have wanted an EV since the beginning of time, and have never looked upon them negatively. At last, finally, I usurp Darell in his former smugness. I look forward to your taxicab confessions. Nate
I think a lot of people from poorer socio-economic groups drive huge cars because they think it shows they have plenty. People of meagre means don't want the world to know it. They may be renting a home and have 5 maxed out credit cards but they drive a big gas sucking pig so they must be rich hey?
