My wife drives an '03 Prius. It is nearly five years old now, with only 37,000 miles on it. My question is: how long does the battery usually last (the regular battery, not the big power one up front)? Should I go ahead and replace it now, or wait til it plays out?

I think of five years as being a reasonable life expectancy for a 12 volt lead-acid car battery. It will be going dowhill from here.
It seems to me that five years is about normal in a conventional car, but the 12v battery in a Prius doesn't do any of the engine cranking that it would in a conventional car. Running relays and computers shouldn't be nearly as taxing. I'd have it checked. You may get significantly more life out of it. Cheers, Geoff
