ScanGauge II - new features to be added

    Just to update everyone - Linear Logic has run into some problems with the new codes in the updated ScanGaugeII for the Prius. They are finalizing some testing today and hope to have units on their way to me early next week. Once I receive them, we'll start shipping them ASAP.

    For those who are interested, I returned my Scangauge II ver 3.03 on 10/04/07 and received it back today 10/12/07 with ver 3.15. So the turn around time is not nearly as long as was first suggested, of course that may change but for now a week and a day is not bad. Although the wait was not bad, I was beginning to go into minor withdrawel mode when unable to view the read out. All is better now.

    I changed positions of where I had it mounted. I first had it by the small round vent on the top left of the IP, the viewing angle was not good and part of the time it was not viewable depending on the position of the sun. I moved it to a position behind the steering wheel and velcrowed it to the IP. Now will see if the velcrow glue will hold when its fairly hot in the car when parked. The viewing is much better in that location.

    I mounted mine in that position behind the steering wheel (although I was loathe to glue the velcro to the panel) It has worked out well there, though the LH buttons are a bit awkward to press. I also had a problem with the velcro strip slipping down, and now the gauge is resting on top of the steering column. My plan is to make a 'base' for it, so it can sit there but at the desired height, since as it is the lower half of the display is partially obscured. That would somewhat interfere with the tilt adjustment (though I rarely change it), so I may try to mount it in such a way that it's only fastened to the steering column, and not the panel itself.

    I'm glad to hear about the quick turnaround time for the upgrade. How do you like the added functionality?

    There are two new ones for the Prius, both have to do with the battery. Gives you more information, I am still not watching enough to use two Scangauges but I may get there. I do like the ability to add more things that you can watch. I understand that the people at LL now have a Prius as a company car maybe they will add to the things that can be monitered with the Scangauge II.

    Got my Scangauge a week ago, v. 3.15. Today I programmed the two new values for the Prius - SOC and battery voltage (BTV). I will monitor SOC, but now I want to monitor more values than the unit is able to show at once. I don't really want to fork up the $$ for a second gauge, but may eventually have to. I wish there were a commercially available splitter connection since I am not really into wiring things together unless the connections are "plug and play". Anyone have step by step directions for the electrically challenged on how to make one of those things?

    1) A highway warp stealth glide

    Can someone post some specifics on what BTV actually indicates? I checked the LL website and it doesn't say anything other than Battery Voltage.

    But what does it indicate exactly? The voltage of the hybrid battery? What purpose does it serve other than knowing what the voltage is?

    I'm just trying to determine if it's a worthwhile item to include on my SG or not.

    At this point, I don't see the need to send mine back for update when I have a rough estimate of SoC on the mfd and if this btv setting reads the same thing continuously.

    If they get all of the temperature reading goodies on there, plus a readout of how much battery power is being used, I'd buy a second one and update the first one.

    So perhaps BTV indicates the voltage coming from the battery at any given time. The higher the SOC, the higher the BTV value?

    Yes, there's a direct correlation between SOC and voltage, for a given temperature and discharge current.

    Note that their horizontal axis is "DOD" (depth of discharge) which is sort of like "negative SOC" -- i.e. DOD% = 100 - SOC.

    If you're interested in looking at the instantaneous energy being used or supplied from/to the battery, you need to monitor current (amperage), not voltage. The voltage varies slowly, roughly corresponding to SOC. Current varies rapidly depending on demand/supply.

    I did notice that - the SOC change was mimicking the BTV change. What I did notice that was interesting after watching for a while was that as soon as the SOC declined to 39.5, the ICE kicked in (display showed 2 purple bars at the time). So far I have not seen > 65.5 SOC. Had 8 green bars last night but did not note the SOC at the time (darn). I hope that the folks at Linear Logic will soon come up with some more fascinating parameters to monitor.
