Atta boy! Going to the gas station (to fill with gas) is about as anti-smug as it gets!

Ah... because the tires on my vehicle of choice use Presta valves and are inflated to 120 psi. Wy windshield is a pair of oakleys that I only clean with microfiber, and one of those pine trees isn't gonna get rid of MY stench!

Honestly - I simply stay away from gas stations just as much as possible. There's really nothing there that I *want* to buy.

I'm chicken to do that. But I did go to a truck stop once to weigh my Xebra (so a guy who was designing aftermarket suspension for it would know the weight) and somebody asked me, "What are you doing here?" I laughed, and told him.

I bought my RAV4 EV in July.

Every morning I'm smug when I pull the charge paddle out of the front grille of my car and have the ability to drive 100 miles gasoline free.

You wanna see smug? Watch me laughing from afar at a Prius owner buying gas.

On a side note, I also laugh at cocaine addicts who are smug because they use less cocaine than most cocaine addicts.

Not bad, but how much are you paying for electricity?

Depending on the price, some of us prius drivers may be laughing instead :)

$20 worth of electricity takes my car about 1,000 miles.

How far does $20 worth of gasoline take your Prius?

;-)

Darell uses EV panels to power his EVs...click on his site in his sig, tons of info there.

Because this is all about money, right? :( Oh... and I *am* a Prius owner/driver as well, so I can tell you with certainty that a 50 mpg gasoline car costs WAY more to operate than an EV. It also does quite a bit more environmental damage, and keeps us dependent on oil. Suffice it to say that the Prius doesn't get driven much. It is down there fourth on the list of prioritized transportation options.

Fear not. Even if I *were* paying for my electricity, it would cost significantly less to power my EV than it costs to power any gasoline car. But as others have mentioned - my power comes from my roof-top PV panels (right, Pvan?) Next year my PV system will be totally paid off, and my electricity truly will be (basically) free for me. How's that compare to the projected future price and availability if gasoline?

I agree that buying gas is still the better bargain though. The price you pay at the pump has almost nothing to do with the actual cost associated with gasoline use. You get a lot more for your dollar at the gas pump because the rest of society pays the costs of security, health, tax breaks for exploration, etc.

So you hafta charge up the Rav up ~every~ morning? That's awful! Hope you're generating your own electricity, or that could get very expensive. Where I'm from the only thing more costly than gasoline is electricity. Anyone here live in the Florida Keys, or am I it?

Nate isn't generating his own electricity yet...but even so his cost per mile is about $0.02 where with a Prius it's closer to $0.06/mile. Any car less fuel efficient will clearly be higher per mile.

Don't forget the cost in both dollars and lives of the wars we fight to maintain control over other countries' oil.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(ELZBETHKW @ Oct 16 2007, 01:16 PM) </div>
If he does like me, he doesn't charge up his car in the morning. I plug in my Xebra when I get home, which takes me about 10 or 15 seconds. It charges itself for as long as it takes. Then I unplug it when I want to drive, which takes another 10 or 15 seconds. That's 20 to 30 seconds each time I drive. And as a bonus, I never have to stand out in the cold to "fuel" it, since I'm in my garage when I plug it in or unplug it.

So, what's electricity cost in the Florida Keys?

According to the "Average Residential KWH Cost" chart near the end of this report from the Florida Keys Electric Co-op:
http://www.fkec.com/newsletters/2007/NewsApril07.pdf
It is between $0.12 and $0.14 per kWh.

More specifically, according to the estimated cost of $120.93 for 1,000 kWh, on this report from the Florida Keys Electric Co-op:
http://www.fkec.com/newsletters/2007/NewsJuly07.pdf
It is $0.12093/kWh

This economic study claims a Key West business cost of $268 for 2,000 kWh:
http://www.provincetowngov.org/affordable/...iesJune2007.pdf
That works out to $0.134/kWh for business use.

How many miles does a Rav4 EV or a Xebra get per kWh of charging?
