Not according to some of his other posts:

Perhaps he accidentally mis-stated the behavior in this discussion? On page 488 his manual says it is possible, but it doesn't sound like it is happening for him at all.

I'm not aware of anyone who has gotten this to work with out a third part mod. I'm curious enough that I'll check my manual tonight when I get to the car. It'd be rather humorous if Toyota added a feature to the manual that they "forgot" to add to the car.

oh ok.. so basically the manual says it auto locks but it doesn't (or hasn't) physically locked?

Well if so, I'm more inclined to trust the car ;)

On page 488 of the 08 Prius manual under customizable features it states "Your vehicle includes a variety of electronic features that can be personalized to your preferences. Programming these preferences requires specialized equipment and may be performed by an authorized Toyota dealership." On page 489 it lists:

"Speed detecting automatic door lock function" - Default "OFF" - Customized setting "ON"
"Shift the shift lever to "P" unlocks all doors" - Default "ON" - Customized setting "OFF"
"Shift the shft lever to position other than "P" locks alll doors" - Default "On" - Customized setting "OFF"

I thought maybe you could buy some type of "scan tool" that would allow the owner to change this setting.

I called Wilsonville Toyota where I purchased the car and they could not get me in to look at this for over a week.
I called Broadway Toyota here in Portland and they said they would charge me to make this change.

So I posted here hoping some else would know how to change this like you do on most other vehicles like our Suburban.

You've come to the right place, unfortunately most of the owners here are not 08' owners and this is the first year they put this in the manual.

Does your car actually do the last two options for "P"? Mine does not.

I mentioned in the other postings I have called Toyota and they are going to call my dealership in Dallas to let them know how to do it. Once I hear from them I'll gather data and post if it's available. If it's not available I'll dig up the case number so you can call Toyo to reference.

No mine does not either. I have an apointment tomorrow with the Dealer that I purchased the car from but can't keep it. I doubt they will be able change the settings anyway as the dealer yesterday said they could not due to an old software issue. I hope you hear something from Toyota! By the way I sent an e-mail to TMS, listed the issue, and received a electronic response saying they "hope to have your email addressed as quickly as possible". We'll see.

So by default it's supposed to lock/unlock based on shifter position but yet yours doesn't do it?

That's really odd. And by the way, this isn't the first time Toyota tried to slip this by us. They did it back in 2005. They had "automatic power door locks" in the Features section in the US site and "locking glovebox and "keycard type fob" on the Canadian site. Of course none of those were true.

No mine does not do what the default should be set to according to the manual.

I noticed you have a TOM TOM. Did you get nav on the car?

riiight... so chances are it doesn't have it? Maybe it's a misprint?

I hope it does cause I miss programmable auto-door locks but Toyota has given misinformation on the Prius multiple times over the last few years.

Yeah I have a TomTom ONE New Edition (V2).

My 2 week old 08 NHW20 doesn't do auto locking, and frankly that surprises me. Something so high tech, I cant believe it doesn't. I had a POS 92 Pontiac Grand Am that did.

There is a switch on the door to lock all doors and habits can be formed in 21 days. Then it will be like auto locking and it will behave just how you like it to.

Hehe. You'd be right at home in the #windows efnet channel, they are so snarky there :)

Actually is there an IRC channel that you folks hang out on? I'd sure love to be there.

I guess if all you do is make inane replies to other posts you can be a “Senior Prius Posterâ€. I wonder if any of your "794" posts have contributed value or just usless sarcastic BS?!?!?

My gripe with the Prius is that in the US it doesn't have automatic headlight turn-on. In Canada it does. In the manual it is described and illustrated. In terms of energy savings, I'd think this feature would be standard. Can't even find a decent after-market device. Oh well, after 21-days I learned to do this manually.

I have an appointment with a dealer that has confirmed that they can change the setting to lock the door when the vehicle reaches a predetermined speed! :D

What dealer are you going to, I'll ask my dealer to contact that dealer. If you have a specific technician that can be contacted that would be even better. CONGRATS!!!

Hopefully it's not BS. I don't remember any newer Toyota ever having their auto locks lock at a certain speed.

Why, instead of making these disparaging remarks didn't you do a search and see how many times I have endeavoured to help other chatters.

This is a chat board I believe, I make a lot of suggestions on here, people can choose to take notice or not take notice, makes no difference to me. I don't think you need to attack me for what I post.

Now I see most of you 14 posts have been questions, what sort of person do you think answers questions?
Do you think a 46-year-old mechanic who happens to get quite reasonable mileage from his Prius might be answering some of those questions other people are asking?

We are on a CHAT BOARD not a bulletin board, please excuse me while I chat!
By the way, my suggestion was not intended to be sarcastic but a back-up plan.

Could the 06 & 07 Prius have the above auto lock feature too? It's not mentioned in the 07 manual but perhaps the auto lock feature can be enabled via a scan tool. The 2006 Glass Breakage Installation guide shows a Scan Tool Menu with a Door Lock Menu item (figure 6-5) - maybe there is an option in the Door Lock Menu to enable the auto lock.

I have a similar discussion going on in another thread call "Auto Door Locking" I've pasted a post I made today from information I received direct from Toyota.
    jp

This Auto Lock thing has really been bugging me. The manual says Yes and everybody else says No. I finally called Toyota and told them my dilema. I asked please tell me "Yes" or "No" can I program my Prius to have the doors auto-lock. He put me on hold and when he came back he said I have a definate answer for you . He said the Prius CAN be programmed to have the doors automatically lock but unfortunately the dealers do not know how to program that feature at this time. He did say that the dealers should know within a week or so. So it looks like I can program my prius to auto lock the doors..... as soon as the dealers figure out how to do it..

It's strange that they couldn't just connect the scan tool and select the appropriate option. Do you think that the automatic door locking will be applicable for all 2004 through 2008 models?
