What is the purpose of it? Replacement or better performance?

prius's come stock with the resonators installed behind the front passenger side of the bumper, if anyone has collision damage or such they would benefit from this part for 20 dollars, since the part from toyota is 54.70

the purpose of the resonator is to dampen air intake noise from the engine.

This is a diagram of how the Toyota Prius air intake system is designed, this is also the same for the 2001-03 prius .
The air intake resonator is number 13, all it is is a empty white box thing that bolts on the frame to dampen intake noise, its useless in my opinion unless your rebuilding a prius back to original specs, u would of course need this part to make it "factory spec".

Gotcha. I understand now. Thank God no collisions yet so I am sure mine are still intact.
