Opel is a GM company, but I think they're developing a totally different EV from what I understand. I really hope they import the Flextreme style!

Actually, these vehicles are available as 'test leases' in certain metro areas like DC and NYC.

According to Consumer Reports an ample infrastructure and reasonable price won't be ready until about 2025, when they will be ready to start rolling off the assembly line. I'm not holding my breath for this one. I can't see spending billions of dollars for an infrastructure that not everyone will use.

I don't doubt that we'll get a token rollout.

Whether or not it is affordable and produced in large quantities should be the concern.

 

Getting the Volt to market is going to happen, if for no other reason than to prevent the movie "Who Killed the Electric Car II-The GM Empire Strikes Back" from being a blockbuster.

If you read the article I referenced further up this thread, you can get an idea of why the Volt isn't real--yet. Issues surrounding the Li-ion traction battery are still presenting a substantial hurdle.

I saw the advertisements in the Los Angeles Times. This is a corporate image campaign. The various cars promoted are clearly identified as concept, experimental technology and test vehicles and they are not being offered for sale.

 

I believe it's put up or shut-up time for GM, seriously doesn't matter if they have a concept car that actually works as advertised, if they're not willing to put their manufacturing muscle behind them and produce them for the masses in large quantities then who cares how green one car really is.

Godiva, you're right and wrong. This past Sunday I had the opportunity to be near and TOUCH the newest GM's Fuel Cell SUV, a very nice looking vehicle, the graphics are very well designed and located in strategic places and with the right color combinations and the best part of it was the gigantic upright banner advertising all the nice things GM is doing for the ECO friendly environment like E85 Ethanol, Electric, Fuel cell and ALSO Hybrid !!!!.

I also had the chance to talk to one of the "technical" oriented greeters showing their late vehicle and explaining what it could do for the environment, imagine having water coming out of the tail pipe instead of toxic gases. Sound magnificent !!!! She unlocked the car with a nice pass key/remote and opened the driver's door.... the driver's seat and the interior resembled as a regular Equinox. I noticed a display screen in center console with the explanation that the drivers does all the commands trough it........

Well, I ask if I was able to take a look at the power train and the marvelous fuel cell, .... sorry , can't do.

Being that is still in experimental stage we are not aloud to show it.

My next question was," So, why have you brought this vehicle to the EcoFest Show if you can't demonstrate to the open public "your technology" and are advertising about it in Manhattan?"

Answer= "Still under development.....

What a bag of BS.

It is a nice looking car......

We can debate all day long about the details but I have one question. Do you really think GM wants this type of vehicle to take off after they verbally tried to destroy the hybrids before they came out? Does this type of vehicle work for their business model? I understand the reasons they must use the Volt for PR but I really wonder if it works for them financially and therefore if it really has a future with GM. The dealers are surely not going to be thrilled with a very low maintance vehicle that generates little revenue. I believe a market for a product can exsist but without incentive (cash) to do it, little progress will be made. I Toyota is no different, they probably view the Prius as a catch 22 at this point.
