This guy is an idiot. He thinks a Smart car is better than a Prius. I disagree! http://www.smartcargroups.com/forums/showt...p?p=166#post166 Why can't people just get along?
1.) Why drive a golf cart when you can drive a go-kart? I believe the smart is a golf cart. The transmission is really jerky and the transmission is slow to change. No exaggeration, come up to Canada and try one for yourself (only until November when the gas version comes out) 2.) Smart car owners can go topless! Come on Prius owners, show us your t***s! Fair enough. It is the cheapest convertible available in Canada (although still pricey at $19-23k) 3.) The Smart Twofor gets better gas mileage than a Prius. Hmm.. he can't spell his own car correctly! Combined, it's actually worse (4.2 on the smart vs 4.1 for the Prius). The smart is rated at 4.6/3.7 (53/62) compared to the Prius at 4.0/4.2 (59/56). So yes it's better on the highway only. 4.) You can park a Smart Car in places a Prius won't fit! That is true. There have been a couple of times where I knew a smart could fit but I couldn't. 5.) You don't need to change out expensive batteries. The Prius batteries are going to doe one day, so what's that gonna cost? What about that semi-automatic transmission? oh wait, it's not powerful enough to blow up. Although to be honest, I can't think of anything on the smart that's expensive to replace.... maybe the tyres b/c of the staggered layout and the odd specs (for the front tyres) 6.) The Prius is ugly! The Smart Twofor is cool! Subjective 7.) Prius' are driven by Hollywood jerks. The Smart buyers are; well, SMART! Subjective again. This is a circular reasoning fallacy. 8.) What is a "Prius" anyway? Sort of sounds like princess to me. Well you don't expect him to know since he can't spell his own car anyway 9.) Take a look at the people who drive Prius'. Are you that kind of person? Why yes, yes I am. Who are you referring to anyway and what kind of reason is this? 10.) The Smart car is a Mercedes! Now THAT'S shallow lol. "hey guys, I bought a $16,000 Mercedes Benz!" (no joke, I have seen someone put Benz emblems on their smart). Except that a Mercedes Benz has better plastics and isn't made of plastic.
haaaa....mercedes....I do own a E320 and a prius...and no other reasons but the fact that i can...and if i want maybe i can get a smart car as well.....haaaaa..... Everyone's ignorant in different subjects...
Hmmm... Smart ForTwo uses less fuel that a Prius? Debatable... A Prius can transport 5 persons and sojme luggage. That would take 3 Smart ForTwos to do the same... A Smart ForTwo is a nice 2nd or 3rd car in your household, but it's way too small to be your only car. And if you want to be eco-friendly, buy a Think City! http://en.think.no -Stein
Heh, that list does not even dignify a response. However, I do have a list of reasons why a Prius is better than a "Smart" car.. 1 - 20 seconds to 60mph = road kill when attempting to merge into freeway traffic. 2 - Long distance trips with room for just one change of clothes in the trunk = reeking driver. 3 - Can you put a hitch on your Smart? Didn't think so. 4 - The Hybrid Synergy Drive badge on the Prius just looks so much cooler. B) 5 - Three words: Touch-screen MFD. 6 - Prius = for families with 2.1 kids + Fido. Smartcar = for families with 0.0 kids + Taco Bell Chihuahua. 7 - The Prius is great for sneaking up on mutha******s and poppin' em because they so quiet. 8 - Just how far can your Smart car coast after you run out of gas, babe? (Prius = 2 miles.) 9 - Two words: SKS Fob. 10 - "Where did you steal that amusement-park bumper car from?"
Well as far as fuel consumption goes it wouldn't be comparing apples with apples to compare a Smart 2 seater with a 4 door 5 seat Prius would it? It also wouldn't be fair to compare a small 4 cylinder 1.3 litre 4 door mini hatch but that is really what the Smart forfour is. So I went looking for fuel consumption figures for a Smart forfour and found this: - From http://www.smartaustralia.com.au/news/smar...ol-station.html also found this here: - http://westnet.drive.com.au/Editorial/Arti...=8964&vf=18 PULP is premium fuel costing about 4 to 10c/L extra! As you can see a Smart much smaller and slower than the Prius has much worse fuel consumption!!! Prius dimensions DIMENSIONS (Note: Some figures are approximate only and may vary due to options/accessories fitted.) Length (mm) 4445 Width (mm) 1725 Height (mm) 1490 Wheelbase (mm) 2700 Ground clearance - unladen (mm) 107 Smart forfour is over 2 feet shorter!! and nearly a foot less space between the axles, that is people space people! Dimensions Height: 1460mm, Width: 1684mm, Length: 3752mm Wheel Base: 2493Cm
"3 - Can you put a hitch on your Smart? Didn't think so. " Actually, I've seen one. A black convertable smart towing a trailer (like one a motorcycle would pull). I really should have taken pictures of it. The hitch attachment was ugly: Huge bolts attachinging it directly to the back bumper surface.

The SMART tour is in town today. I'm going to go check them out. I like the size. It not being hybrid is the biggest deterrent for me getting one.
I had the chance to drive a Smart car about 8 years ago when I spent some time in Germany. It drove decently at that time (and part of the jerkiness was surely due to my getting used to a 3-speed tranny), and I'm sure that the technology has only improved since then. My lasting impression is that its a great vehicle for short commutes -- running to the grocery store, gym, dropping kids off at school, commuting to work, etc -- rather than a car that you'd want to take on a 600 mile roadtrip. It shouldn't be compared to a golf cart, and it could be a great 2nd car for a family. And it rocks in large cities, due to its ability to park perpendicular to other cars. I love my Prius, but there's no need to knock the Smart car. It has its purpose, just as the Prius does, and I'd much rather see folks driving that instead of a massive Navigator or Excursion.
A friend of mine owns a Smart. The cutest car I've ever seen. And that's about the only positive thing I could say about it. Here are some facts: - Worst handling of any car currently in production - The slowest accelerating car in production Both of those make the Smart [one of] the most dangerous car currently in production due to its inability to react quickly to an emergency situation, where quick acceleration and good handling could get you out of harm's way.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Tideland Prius @ Sep 27 2007, 10:39 PM) </div> Being a Mercedes would kill the Smart car for me. On the last list of predicted reliability I saw from "Consumer Reports" (April, 2007), Mercedes-Benz in general was last on the list, being the least reliable. Besides, the Smart car is really pricey for what you get. It reminds me of the BMW Isetta, the little car years back that the whole front was the door. Kind of a motorcycle with a hardtop. One of it's nicknames was "Sargwagen", which translates from German "coffin on wheels". [attachmentid=11820]
I did have a chance to test drive the 2nd generation Smart a few times earlier this year and all I have to say is that I'm getting one. Both the "Prius" and the "Smart" will fit well in our lifestyle.
If I'm going to have a 2 seater it will be an Insight, but I live in the country. If I were in downtown San Francisco or something I might consider the Smart for a daily driver, but definitely not for long trips or taking the family places.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(stumpy_c @ Sep 29 2007, 03:22 PM) </div> Yes, I agree. The Smart is a cute little car that definitely has it place, but it's no match for the Prius as a "normal" car. Tom
Might be a hit with city folks. I personally would wait till they are out for some time to see if they are going to stay, how reliable they are, dealer support and network, etc , etc. And also most importantly wait till the crash test results are in on them. They look a bit pricey though for such a small vehicle.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(stumpy_c @ Sep 29 2007, 12:22 PM) </div> The 2-seater for me would have to be the Tesla B) -- No comparison for looks, economy, ...or acceleration. And thank God its NOT a Mercedes  Baby Buggy: [attachmentid=11735] Babe Magnet: [attachmentid=11736]
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(bulldog @ Sep 29 2007, 03:09 PM) </div> Euro Ncap scaled the 1st gen's Smarts 4/5 stars. I think the US crash test of the 451's will have a similar rating. As for a small vehicle, the Smart has plenty of leg/head room. More than most mid/large cars out there. At over 6'2, that's another reason why I'm buying one.
There's an afrikaans proverb: "Leë pyp hou toe jou kraan, dan sien ons jou vir 'n volle aan" Directly translated it means: "Empty pipe keep your faucet closed and we'll all think you're full" Meaning: Keep your mouth shut about things you know nothing about and people won't know how ignorant you are. The SMART is a silly albeit cute car. The Prius is a practical, spacious family car that happens to be clean. You cannot fit four adults and shopping into a SMART. NOTE: The BOLD section does not refer to people on this board, but only to the person who made the statements initially.
