Sometimes my battery bar light goes from blue (normal) to this weird lemon-lime color. Is that normal?

What do you have to do to get the bars all the way to the top! I can get it up to "1 to go" but have never got to the top. Drove from florida to New York once a two day trip with about 10 hours on the road the first day and still couldn't get that final bar to show!

Its really painful to be at a stop light with 5 blue bars and the engine running, charging the battery. Add some hill and that 8th bar will show up. The REALLY funky thing is if you get it too well charged, the car will run the ICE to pull power out of the battery. I had that happen once coming down a really long hill. Got to the signal at the bottom, 8 green bars and the engine started and ran a bit, stopped, then did it twice more. Too bad it didn't know I was getting on the interstate in .25 miles Fortunately I had read about that scenario here because until I remembered reading it, I thought my car had a serious problem!
