I'm buying a used 2006 from an individual and they think they only have the one smart key and no other spares. How many should have come with the car new?
Be super weary! I think the prius is only capable of accepting 4 or 5 fobs. After which I don't know what is required to reset it (ie reset the prius, throw out existing key and buy 2 new fobs!?) <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(milhouse @ Sep 17 2007, 09:09 AM) </div>
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(milhouse @ Sep 17 2007, 10:09 AM) </div> In my opinion get 2 fobs or a deep discount. What else is missing or abused?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(JimN @ Sep 17 2007, 09:02 PM) </div> I believe I am getting a deal on the car as they are difficult to find around here and the seller is an acquaintance. Dealers want MSRP +$150 in some kind of fee and there is a 3 month wait as they 'build' it. As for what else is missing or abused, I'm not sure. We just figured out we wanted a Prius about 3 weeks ago, so my knowledge is limited. She did admit she is 'hard on cars'. She's had it for just over a year and only has driven it 7800 miles.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(milhouse @ Sep 18 2007, 07:57 AM) </div> Milhouse, all my warning lights are lit. Why is she selling? How does the interior look? Is the interior plastic scratched up? It should have had 1 oil change. There should be a minimum number of scratches & dings. Are 4 floor mats & a mat for the deck included? If you post a list of options and asking price you may get a more informed response. The only loose pieces I can think of are: glove box tray, center console tray, spare tire tie down straps, small storage bay cover (left side of rear deck). You may be performing the first Prius rescue I've heard of. Check out the info at www.carbuyingtips.com.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(JimN @ Sep 18 2007, 08:37 PM) </div> I not sure of proper etiquette here; should I start a new thread for all this or just keep going on this thread? I'll keep going for now, but can start a new thread if desired... She's selling because she is ordering a Lexus SUV hybrid. The Prius was just to see how the hybrid thing worked for them. The interior is in good shape. There is a stain (crayon? make-up?) in the back seat. Nothing too scratched up except for the interior of the hatch. A couple dings high on the passenger side. All floor carpeted mats (she used Disney rubber mats over them) and the deck mat. I did see a center console tray, but didn't notice a glove box tray. I saw some straps still in the wrapping under the deck mat. She is an acquaintance, not a stranger. My wife did some volunteer work with in a few years ago, and then I met her in a group we both joined a couple months ago. I noticed she had a Prius at last months meeting and when we met this month, I asked her how she liked it. She said it was great but was going to trade it in for the Lexus. I told her I was interested in buying it. I am known to be naive, but if the deal is bad I don't think she doing it deliberately. We priced it on Edmunds as 'clean'. Thanks for the help and input. I'm eager to learn!
Two smart keys and two thin metal tags with some numbers inprinted on them. (one is only about 3/4x3/8 inch, the other a 2" key shaped tag) The whole thing of having two keys is, of course, if one key gets lost or there will be two regular drivers of the car. The tags have code numbers for that particular car. This smart key is a pricy little item... you should get the keys or call off the sale. If the previous owner is that unconcerned about the keys... then what else was neglected? Save yourself some headaches. Drive safe, enjoy the drive - Nda3rdcar
if your paying what the lexus dealer offered in trade your are probably getting a good deal. Get a replacement key from toyota, what are we talking $1,000 bucks? Maybe you should tell us the package and what your paying.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Elephanthead @ Sep 19 2007, 10:03 AM) </div> She only has the one smart key. Doesn't recall having any others. It's a 2006. I assuming package #8 from what I've read on the forum. Leather/nav, etc. 7800 miles. $21,000. The deal happens tonight.
Don't know the prices in your area, but after saying that, the price sounds reasonable. The full deal package new is around $28,000. The Prius doesn't depreciate rapidly. If you want a second fob it will cost around $400 including programming. I've seen posts where people have gotten them for as little as $250 programmed. Depends on how greedy the dealer is. You can have up to 4, as I recall, programmed into the car. When they program in a new one, they can erase the old ones (for safety). Be aware, if you don't have a working fob it will cost a lot more to program a new one. I've seen $1000 mentioned. So it's good to have a working spare. The glove box tray mentioned above is a shelf. If it's installed you wouldn't think of it as a tray, just a shelf. It's in the upper glove box.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(David Beale @ Sep 19 2007, 10:42 AM) </div> Local dealer says $202.57 for the key. $80 for programming.
Another warning to add -- Be sure that the FOB has the small mechanical key attached to it. This is used to allow you to open the driver's door if you loose power. (Not sure if it also opens rear hatch. (On my Camry Hybrid, it opens the trunk.)
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(John Smith @ Sep 19 2007, 01:16 PM) </div> Thanks. It does have that. When I kept asking for a second key, that's what she found.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(John Smith @ Sep 19 2007, 01:16 PM) </div> The only keyhole on the Prius is on the driver door. The hatch can only be opened by either pressing the button under the lip of the trunk with Smart Key FOB in range or pressing the FOB unlock button twice. This also means you cannot open the trunk from outside if you have a dead 12V battery.
