Why does the Prius not have a Cassette Player any more as a option? Also, what are my options to be able to listen to the Library's " Books On Tape" selections.

    Thank you, Mitch S.

    A:)

For the same reason that it uses a gas & an electric motor instead of a steam engine and a wood burning boiler.

    B:)

Most of the "Books on Tape" are now available on CD's

(With a portable cassette player and the audio card on your computer you can convert tapes to CD's) :)

Don't know but I recall a lot of people wondering "why does the Prius COME with a cassette player?" (referring to the 04/05 models)

I guess I'm a dinosaur, too, but I was very disappointed when I traded my 05 Prius on an 06 that I lost my cassette deck, too. It ended my learning Spanish in the car saga...

You can plug a Walkman into the Aux input.

Books on CD should work for the Prius, since it does the smart thing and pick up wherever it left off when you turn it back on.

For those who never experienced the fun, though, books on CD normally fail, because most CD players either start at the track you left off on (and of course there's no fast forward or rewind), or start at the beginning of the entire CD.

The plugging a Walkman into the Aux input is probably the best solution posted, though.

One reason (for me at least) was that the 04/05 doesn't have an AUX input so it's useful if you have a cassette adapter.

Since all my audio books are MP3 format, I put them on an iPod and got a DICE.

Because it is 2007. I didn't even know they sold cassettes anymore. iPod, CD, MP3 CD's, etc.. Tapes are way obsolete.

But like it was said the best bet is a walkman and simply plug the headphone jack into the Aux in just like you would if you used an iPod!

Clayton, if you are out there-- I thought that 8 track in your Gremlin in high school was soooo cool.

I would welcome the cassette as well, since I didn't trash them when the next best thing came along. And neither did I replace them with CD's or get an MP3....

If for whatever reason you can't/don't want to use the Aux input (do the Base models have Aux-in?), another alternative would be to get one of those FM transmitters that plugs into the headphone jack of the walkman and broadcasts to an unused FM frequency that the stock radio is tuned to.

Although the Aux would probably be a better choice, this is another option...

I never went down the cassette route. I was a reel-to-reel man, which never really worked well for mobile applications.

What!?! I tried tracking down a MD player for my 05 and ended up having to get an iPod because of that! Yes, I have MD, do you need some?

    Prius = good technology
so i guess they thought cassettes were not...

i'm thinking it could be an option but... it would look sort of weird... at least in my point of view... and even more now that people dont even buy them...
    eveything is downloadable now...

I'm not sure where the original poster is located, but the Los Angeles Public library has an online e-book download service. People should check with their local library system for similar services.

Books can be downloaded to a computer then transferred to a MP3 player, for free. The system is NOT compatible with Apple-brand iPods. This is due to Apple wanting to sell the book through iTunes.

The online loan is for a period of 2 weeks, after which an e-mail is sent asking if you want an automatic erase of the book from your hard drive. The book is then removed from your account and made available to the public. We listen to the books in the Prius all the time via the MP3 player or creating MP3 discs. The MP3 disc uses 1/4 the space as the regular disc. The MP3 disc does not have as good a dynamic range as a regular CD but just fine for books on tape.

Random House does not allow their books to be part of this service, so no Harry Potter for free (unfortunately).

I have purchased thousands of dollars of books over a 20-year period. Now I get them for FREE! That covers my monthly gas bill for the Prius, lol.

    Regards,
    Tenor1

I know what you mean, it's nice to have that analogue sound quality. Today's music is hindered by digital compression. I've been listening to an Absurd demo I just got and I can't imagine not having a tape player.

Better hurry - anyone notice that it is impossible to find auto-reversing portable casette players!! Even basic ones will be out of production soon.
