Whats the most you've hauled in your prius?

Err Let's see...

A big ol' welder (the sort which comes on it's own truck) and the gas bottle which goes with it.
Three adults and one Collie
Four large suitcases
An electric bike on the back
four 12V batteries (about 1.5 feet long by 1 foot by 8 inches), weighing about 60 lbs each
An iMac (the old rainbow sort)
Three fairly large sized tool boxes
An air compressor.


There wasn't much room!

 

Anyone tried removing the "secret" trunk area and the plastic next to it (right before the back seats - I think it needs to be unscrewed) to increase the depth of the trunk? I am thinking of transporting a couch in my car (I know I am a little ambitious here), the problem is the shortest depth of the car, not the length or the width.

 

47" LCD television, in it's factory box.

Perfect fit, not an inch to spare.

 

So far, the most cargo was the two alloy wheels with tires (for my Peugeot 405 Mi16). I've taken three friends out to dinner. That's all, folks.

It would have to be a pretty small couch. The tray in the back under the cargo area floor lifts out - no screws. The spare tire is under it. The 'big' battery is housed forward of the tray, behind the rear seats and you CAN'T do anything to get extra depth there Taking the tray out will not increase the height between the latch and the hinges on the hatch. That is your limiting dimension (height, width and depth).

I meant to get back to this thread earlier; I remarked a couple weeks ago that I would post my results from a trip to a gig in a nearby town. I play drums and use an older Ludwig 5 pc. set. I was able to stow all stands and metal hardware along with cymbals and stickbag under the cargo floor in the compartment. I then laid the cargo floor back down and fit the rest of the set in the back end with all seats up. So, a complete ready to set up and play 5 piece drumset will pretty easily fit in the back with room for five left over. I will post pics as soon as I get them developed and scanned.

 

What you don't see here is the 4 peeps and the family dog we had piled in as well.......!

The weight was measured using truck scales (empty and full) and includes me and about 2/3s of a tank of gas. I drove without the A/C, windows 1" open most of the time at or just below the speed limit keeping an eye on the mileage. Cruise control most of the time except through cities.

The car handled the weight fine. The only differences I noticed were that it would kill EV mode sooner due to the increased power needed to accelerate, and the engine revved a little higher than usual during acceleration.

Yes, it still closed. There are a couple shoe boxes, two headrests, and the cargo cover under the false floor.

I even used the space under the now-flat passenger seat! (The headrests needed to come out so I could lower it this far.)

...and still plenty of room for the driver! (The seat is all the way back.)

And I thought today I had a load with a 10' Ficus, anitque bench seat, 4x5 ft. mirror, another smaller picture and the Wife. But DanG!!!! Pegasus has me beat!!

My friends think the Prius is nearly as useful as my old truck was......sometimes we have to breakdown stuff like the day bed from IKEA but I have done lots of CostCo furniture boxes too.

I think I am going to need to get a less handy car. My friend recently purchased a Suzuki SUV....there is 4 in. between the edge of the back seat and the back of the front seat...nothing like riding in the back of the Prius, something else most of my friends prefer d/t the roominess back there.

I went 657 miles each way to pick up 14 Group 31 sealed deep-cycle batteries @ 60 lbs ea. = 840 lbs + me & gas. These are for my electric car Main Page - WorldcarWiki

Two beds from Ikea (1 twin loft, 1 twin bunk bed) and misc other bits. Killed my milage going up from Phoenix to Flagstaff...

I've hauled
-a boxed and disassembled crib
-a boxed and partially disassembled glider (the guy loading the car was amazed the HUGE box fit in my little hatchback and the door closed.
- 4 sheets of cement backerboard

(not all at the same time )

I use my prius for construction. 10ft lengths of pvc is interesting.

the heaviest load would have to be.... enough lumber to build a fence. the concrete weighed in around 720lbs. (12 60lb bags) I'm sure i was way over the limit. high speed travel was still comfortable. (80mph)
