Wrong.

Blame politicians who are lobbied by The College Board.

Educators do as they're told. The law says they must teach "this", then "this" is taught. And if there isn't enough time in the instructional day for geography or spelling, then it isn't taught. As a teacher, you better not be caught violating the instructions from the District or your principal will write up a letter of reprimand. You could even lose your job.

Educators are the LAST people you should be blaming for NCLB. From the start they pointed out all of the flaws. OH, and testing doesn't do ANYTHING for the learning process, except perhaps hinder it. (Second graders crying from the stress of testing comes immediately to mind.) It's the politicians that insist on testing as some sort of proof to earn the money being put into education. Totally stupid and unscientific.

AP Human Geography and AP Environmental Science (Physical Geography) are increasingly taught in greater numbers at US high schools. For many years geography was only memorizing the capitols of states in fourth grade and was completely dropped at the high school level in favor of math and language arts ("No Teacher Left Standing").

Geography has taken on new importance with the global economy, geographical information systems (GIS), global positioning system (GPS) and readily available tools such as Google Earth. Planners increasingly look to economic and cultural geography models for transportation, development and ecosystem analysis.

Geographers know where things come from, how they got there, where they are at and what they are doing there, and where they are going.

She just HAD to be from the South, didn't she?! Geez; like we don't have enough of the s'tupid southerner' stereotype. I'll bet the next time a tornado rips through SC, they'll interview her about it on TV. She might quote Jeff Foxworthy and say, "It was pandelerium." :D

Poor kid. I think she had the 'deer in headlights' look when she got the question. It is a little difficult to answer. I can find most countries on a map, especially my own, so I don't know why someone else can't. I would have trouble articulating a valid reason. But she went soooo far off-base... she will be humiliated by this for the rest of her life.

Really? You're saying 20% (60 million) of the 300 million people in the US are sooo good looking they don't need to be able to read a map? They didn't ask her why SHE couldn't find the US. You had all the time you wanted to come up with your answer, not seconds like she did. Obviously she was nervous and just blew it. Some of those kids do the pageants for the scholarships, etc. Also, doesn't the winner go on to either fund raise or bring awareness to some worthy cause? I wouldn't judge her too harshly.

Isn't this a sad statement for a country that professes to be a "Christian" nation with "Christian" values?

That was really, really painful and embarassing to watch. But I would like to point out that she is a teenager, facing a huge international audience and questions she is not prepared for. Brain freeze is not that uncommon for someone in that position.

Whatever you do, don't enter a beauty contest and try to answer a question. ;)
I never said, or hinted at 20% of Americans being "sooo good looking." I said "she is hotter than 99.95%" and "some of us."
So, is she in the top 3,000 of the most beautiful people in the US? After the exposure she just got, I'd bet she would show up on that list.

P.S. So who won the beauty contest???   Therein lies the rub. She won on so many accounts. I'd even go so far as to suggest that the actual winner would trade her crown for the exposure this girl is now receiving.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(burritos @ Aug 28 2007, 11:29 AM) </div>
Which statement? The 99.95% statement, or the "some of us are so beautiful" joke of an answer?

Personally, I don't see where either statement could be construed as an indictment regarding the status of Christian values in any nation.
No, I think this is an indictment against our nation's public school system . . . the same one in which morals and 'Christian values' had long been removed. :p

Is EVERYTHING a sad statement regarding Christian values for you? Are you really that one tract minded?

that may be true, but they ( pageant commision ) and the parents, put all the emphasis on looks, In the town I live in now, host the Miss Missour pageant every year, ( or I think that's what it is called) and all you hear about for the upcoming weeks are" did you see how she looks," they could give a rats A$$ if she knows her ABC's. It's looks in this country.

There are grown ups who flubber around questions , to mention GW comes to mind first.

But to answer the question the first time like she did was crazy, she should have had them repeat it, that would have given her more time to comprehend it maybe.

That's why the debate team is or should say was vital when I was growing up, I don't even know if they do that still.

Sure you did. When you said "some of us", implying "some" was the 1/5 (20%) of population that the question referred to. Unless you were trying to make your "correct" and "joke" answer as unresponsive as she made hers. :D

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(priussoris @ Aug 28 2007, 10:52 AM) </div>
If she had the presence of mind to ask them to repeat the question she probably could have answered the question coherently to begin with.

Actually, I think that the question she was asked was not the question that she had been "prepared" for.

Or, do you think that these are truly unrehearsed Q&A segments? :D

The subject is 1/5th of the population.
Her saying, "some of us" is in reference to the 1/5th, not the population as a whole.
If she would have said, "all of us" in reference to the 1/5th, then I would see your point . . . but the subject is the 1/5th of the population.

uh, wow. She's still more articulate than most of our elected officials. Except maybe Obama. But he's so clean and articulate, that, uh, it's not really a fair comparison. BTW, what precisely is "The Iraq"?

Considering what these contests are, I think intelligent girls don't enter them.

She is 18. Old enough to drive, vote and join the military.

Part of the pageant schtick is being able to think on your feet, maintain your poise and speak extemporaneously.

I'm sure she loves her mother.

She should've had a few pints beforehand then. Not so many that she turned into "Professor Upton", wouldn't want that. But, gor blimey! What she said was completely incoherent. It made absolutely no sense. I can understand stumbling over a few words, or mispronouncing something. Everybody does that, even people with a lot of public speaking experience (dubya comes to mind), but what she said was completely devoid of meaningful content.

Hopefully she's as dumb as a rock. That way she probably won't feel utterly humiliated. If she's actually intelligent she should shove a crayon up her nose, ala Homer J, to make it all go away.

Maybe she's 99.95% hotter than the people in cowtown, but here where I live, every third girl(14-25y/o) here is a pre pregnancy brittany spears wannabe. Unfortunately they are equally dumb. When you spend 5 hours a day trying to look good, you're taking that away from time to enhance your brain.
