http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6958824.stm Iraq might become like Vietnam if we leave? What a funny bunny. Is this assertion "WMDs"-grade quality?
Bush trying to be ironic is like water trying to be wet. Unfortunately I doubt he realizes the irony of 99% of what comes out of his mouth.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(burritos @ Aug 22 2007, 07:56 PM) </div> People who oppose the war in Iraq don't seem to like it when someone tries to take "their" comparison with Vietnam and turn it around on them. I can understand that why they wouldn't like that...
Bush has always been quite clear on his Vietnam position. In the sixties, he thought (and obviously continues to think) that American involvement in Vietnam was great and should have continued, ad infinitum (the standard Republican ideal of perpetual war, so long as they don't have to fight in it). It's quite convenient for him to stick to this line of thought since there was always zero chance of him actually ever being sent into combat, what with his wealthy, connected father pulling strings to get him into the Texas Air National Guard and all. If nothing else, Bush's baffling Iraq comparison to America leaving Vietnam essentially confirms that US troops will not leave Iraq in any significant or meaningful numbers while he remains in office. Which, in and of itself, will be an interesting situation come next spring. Unless there are some dramatic changes in DoD policies on Iraq combat tours of duty, that's when the US is going to run out of available cannon fodder to continue sending to Iraq. Well, at current military pay and bonuses, anyway. I suppose they can just double all the pay and perks for enlistment/reenlistment and they'll be able to round up and keep enough additional poor bastards to maintain the current troop levels through the end of Bush's term and satiate his hope that Iraq not become 'another Vietnam'. Sheesh, who's writing his material now that Rove is gone? Dick "Five deferments because of priorities other than Vietnam" Cheney? He's the only one in the current Bush administration who comes even close to being that delusional.
I love how they resist comparing Iraq to Vietnam...except when it comes to withdrawal. Maybe we should compare Iraq to the French in Algiers?
