I try too. I know I'm wasting water washing them, but I'm assuming that's less of an impact that the raw materials required and energy needed to make/ship them.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(burritos @ Aug 15 2007, 12:52 AM) </div> Depends on what was in them. I have a set I use for the dog food when I go on vacation. I put his meal in each one so it's easier for my Mother to feed him. No measuring involved. She kept the bags the last time and used them for her dog's pre-measured meals when she stayed with me. I also have some ziploc bags that only hold groups of smaller, pre-measured bags or Foodsaver vacuum sealed bags. I actually try to avoid using a lot of bags. I'll make the Foodsaver bags large so I can reseal them each time they're opened. But mostly I use tupperware or refrigerator dishes for items I store in the fridge. The Ziplocs and Foodsavers are for the freezer. My Mother just turned me on to a new item by Foodsaver that will allow me to seal Ball jars for canning without a hot water bath. Sweet! I can't reuse the metal lids, but those can be recycled.
We do depending on the contents. We don't use a lot of them in the first place, but they have their uses for sure.
their main use in our house is for freezing 1/2 lb of ground turkey per bag. i'm not gonna reuse those. everything else gets reusable, washable containers. including my sandwiches for lunch.
We make every effort NOT to use ziplock baggies. Those we do use, we reuse, to the extent possible, except those that held food with a high oil content. We dehydrate and store in glass jars or freeze food. As much as possible, we eat fresh from our organic garden.
If you have to use ziplock bags, try lining it with a paper towel or a washable material that you can throw in with your laundry. This way any juice, gunk etc doesn't get stuck in the bag and you won't have to rinse it with water.
Yes and no, depending on contents. They usually start out as "food grade" and work their way down from that point. I try to re-use without washing if possible, say if only dry food like crackers were the contents. I take my lunch to work pretty much every day, so they only sit around for the night before going into use again...why even bother washing? The preservatives in the crackers would probably last longer than the bag itself, anyway!! [smile]
I use Tupperware containers for lunch. I've got a freezer set that is the perfect size for a sandwich made with italian bread and another that is a good size for a snack amount of chips, cheetos, fritos or something else. I'm not drinking soda anymore. So I mix up a jug of Koolaid or something or buy a bottle of juice, then use a coffee mug and rinse it out afterwards.
Nope - it's impossible to keep the drug sniffing dogs at the airport from barking. You never really get the smell out...
Yes, we reuse them. Wash them after use. Including freezer bags. We reuse AL foil (depending on use) and plastic wrap. For example, if the wrap was around a loaf of bread, why not re use the piece?

Considering where you live, you have access to some of the best strawberries in the world. I use them to store excess strawberries which then become the main ingredient to great smoethies(when mixed with soy milk and a banana).
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Godiva @ Aug 15 2007, 07:18 PM) </div> Glad I tuned into this thread. Awesome idea! Since we mostly use these bags for lunch, containers would work great to eliminate this item from our trash output. Surely they now make tupperware containers that are specifically for sandwiches. Off to Target I go! Gracias.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(SSimon @ Aug 16 2007, 11:19 AM) </div> Yes, they do. My Tupperware ones are a rusty red bottom with a clear lid and almost square. They're fine for regular white bread but a little roomy and my sandwich sometimes slides around. But Tupperware has a line of freezer containers with clear bottoms and clear pastel lids. My lids are turquoise or violet. I bought them two separate years and the color changed. The ones I use are about 4 x 6 and shallower than the sandwich ones. I like to buy Wonder Italian sliced bread for sandwiches; makes a smaller sandwich. It's squatter than the normal white bread and it fits in these freezer containers perfectly. That's what I use for lunches. I use a small but taller freezer container for the chips if I have them. It's a good single serving size. I think the thing I like about these freezer containers over the regular Tupperware is it is so much easier to get the lids on and off. My Mom is having a garage sale soon so I may just get rid of the lunch ones. I don't use them for anything.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Godiva @ Aug 14 2007, 10:59 PM) </div> So I take it you like your foodsaver? I've been looking into one, but dont know anyone who actually has one & could give me their honest opinion. I do try to reuse bags, like for work I put trail mix in a small bag, then I keep that bag forever & just refill it. Of course, any bag w/ meat in it I do not reuse! (but then tupperware isnt that great either! ) I do have a few tupperware's I try to use more than the bags, because I can just as easily wash them out & use them again.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(burritos @ Aug 14 2007, 10:52 PM) </div> I've wondered the same thing. But I HATE washing the things out. I keep the ones that aren't too messy for re-use but deep-six the rest, though somewhat guiltily. I agree with Godiva - Tupperware is usually a better way to go.
I use a mix of Tupperware and ziplock for my lunches. I do re use the bags for about a week or so, just for dry things like cereal and crackers.
rarely.... i used to reuse them for my snacks that i would bring for lunch... but realized the ziplock bowls were easier so now i just use those for my goldfish or cereal! the ones i use to freeze in.. nope... in the trash they go!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(SSimon @ Aug 16 2007, 09:19 AM) </div> I do the same thing. My quest for a perfect sandwich holder is somewhat incomplete though. The one's I've tried are just a wee bit large. The best I've seen is a Crayola branded container for kids that I use. So far, no one has made fun of me yet though.
