Sounds similar to my experience, with commute 50 mi each way, Ventura County, aroudn town on the weekends, but:

I keep tires are 42 / 40
I travel speed limit, 65 mph, not 70 mph.

I get overall about 48 to 49 mpg.
I get better economy on the highway than around town. Too many short trips, I think, the speed around town is about 45 mpg, which does not help much.

 

Try to slow down a little if you can and like others said check the tire pressures. It's probably the errands that are killing your city mileage. I get ~70-80mpg around town but use the car strictly for getting to work (30 minute trips on a known route). Timing stoplights helps big-time; I kind-of get to automatically pulse and glide because of it. I suggest letting off the gas WAY before you come to a stoplight, you'd be surprised how far you can coast and not lose much speed. Good luck, see you around...

Also I have read but haven't experienced that if the oil is slightly overfilled it takes away some MPG and that they are known to overfill it from the factory. (most likely the dealership topped it off)
