I once heard that certain city parking zones offered parking meter exemptions to hybrids with HOV stickers. Did I completely misunderstand? Does anyone have any information on this? Thanks!!!

I don't see the point of allowing free parking at meters just because you drive a hybrid. That certainly is not one of the benefits I had in mind when I bought my Prius. If anything, it just brings more resentment toward the hybrid community. On the other hand, if a private business wants to do something like this with reserved parking for hybrids, then it is entirely their business. I think I remember reading that Ikea was doing this. However, I don't think municipalities should be doing it with revenue-generating meters.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(I WANT A PRIUS! @ Aug 16 2007, 10:35 AM) </div> The city of San Jose offers free parking to hybrids eligible for HOV lane stickers (whether or not you actually have them). You have to pay a $30 fee and prove you own an eligible model, and you get a mirror tag that exempts you.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Swanny1172 @ Aug 16 2007, 01:13 PM) </div> Interesting. Do you see the point of Tax Credits for new Prius onwers? And if you do, what's the difference between the two? Aren't both meant to encourage Hybrid vehicle ownership? Exactly what is wrong with that?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(PriusOwner004 @ Aug 16 2007, 03:05 PM) </div> I do have a problem with Tax Credits for new Prius owners. The only thing that should be encouraging the shift to hybrid ownership is the market itself. Do you really think people are buying the Prius for the tax credit? It might have been a nice little added bonus, but that is about it.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(PriusOwner004 @ Aug 16 2007, 03:05 PM) </div> Because a tax credit is a Federal incentive whereas a free parking meter is provided by local municipality. A lot of municipalities subsidize projects from parking meters. For example, public transit! When you start giving hybrids free parking, you take away from the local projects. It's a dumb idea that is eventually going to change once there are too many hybrid owners. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Swanny1172 @ Aug 16 2007, 03:11 PM) </div> Thank you! Agreed. I hope not. Yep.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Swanny1172 @ Aug 16 2007, 02:11 PM) </div> Of course! Not every Prius owner is a movie star and can easily afford a Prius. One of the main reasons I bought a Prius was the tax credit. Without incentives I believe there would be a lot less Priuses on the road. That's proven by statistics. SUV sales rose up big time when Mr. Bush offered incentives for buying large American SUVs a few years back.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(PriusOwner004 @ Aug 16 2007, 03:22 PM) </div> Can you please provide the statistics on buyers that made their purchasing decisions based on the tax credit, as I have never seen them? You say "I believe" and then "that's proven by statistics". Well, is it opinion or fact? Also, please enlighten me to the SUV incentives you claim that Bush gave. I know manufacturers offered sales incentives when the SUV market went in the tank, but I don't recall the federal government having anything to do with it. Your profile says you own a base model 2004 Prius. The 2004 Prius had a base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $20,510. That is hardly out of the range of what most people can afford, even without the tax credit. Besides, you buy the car and get the tax credit later, so it is not like it is immediately deducted from the purchase price and wouldn't affect a monthly car loan or lease payment.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Swanny1172 @ Aug 16 2007, 02:39 PM) </div> I should've made it clear. The tax credit was given to small business owners. It helped greatly increase the sales of SUVs. Though I'm thrilled that $2000 is apparently pocket change for you and you could care less if you get credit or not, truth is Tax Incentives help boost sales.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(PriusOwner004 @ Aug 16 2007, 03:59 PM) </div> Source please? After all, this is the Internet and people have been know to make stuff up in an attempt to make a point.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Swanny1172 @ Aug 16 2007, 03:39 PM) </div> G.W. Bush allowed for a tax deduction of up to $102,000 for small businesses and the self-employed over the year an SUV was purchased. It's Section 179 of the IRS code. http://www.irs.gov/publications/p954/ar02.html#d0e2365
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(oly_57mpg @ Aug 16 2007, 04:13 PM) </div> Thanks, but I was waiting on the source for the "proven by statistics" that show that without tax incentives, there would be a lot less Priuses on the road.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Swanny1172 @ Aug 16 2007, 03:28 PM) </div> Use the "search" function on your browser to find your proof. I didn't come here to start fights with anyone. You seem to be a very disturbed individual. I've read many of your snarky posts, calling people names, etc. Let's just leave it at that.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(PriusOwner004 @ Aug 16 2007, 04:32 PM) </div> Boy, you joined today, have made 8 whole posts and you are suddenly an expert on the 'search' function and the content of this website. What a quick learner you are. You deserve a gold star. You said there is statistical proof and I asked you to provide it. Just admit it was your opinion. There is no shame in that.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(PriusOwner004 @ Aug 16 2007, 04:32 PM) </div> Oh gees. Like throwing gasoline on an open flame, do we? <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Swanny1172 @ Aug 16 2007, 04:39 PM) </div> Alright... Since I have lived in both CA and OH, I'll be the decider that you're both disturbed to stay in either state.   Ok... please take that as a really bad joke. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Swanny1172 @ Aug 16 2007, 04:39 PM) </div> Well, there's no verifiable statistical proof so it's all opinionated anyway. Trying to dig up proof one way or another is pretty difficult. There are however, lots of reports of 'failed' businesses that just used their status to use the SUV deduction. There are _lots_ of posts here on PC about the tax credit influence and it's about equal for 'yes' and 'no' for purchasing the vehicle. Since the tax credit wouldn't help out financially until a few months after the year the car was purchased, it seems a bit odd to consider it as a buying advantage. That's just my, opinionated, $0.02 though.
I agree. You don't want to create an image of hybrid drivers as being "too" special. Being on the highway, driving the vehicle and emitting less pollution than conventional vehicles (and getting to drive in the carpool lane as a reward), that's different. But getting out of having to pay the same fines as others will only irritate non-hybrid drivers, some of whom just cannot afford a hybrid even if they wanted one.
