The $100 price drop was the main reason. Also I found Wii is more fun for game (family type). Once I get back from vaca, I will look for another PS3 bundles. For folding purpose, $500 is not bad for a device that can generates ~8000 points per week.

Let try to get our rank into the 400's. B)

SWEET! The climb to top 100 will be tough without new blood but it can be done.

Slow and steady wins the race, a lot of the teams that we are passing used to be big, now they have died out. Every folder is important to the cause, because it is a team effort.

It's taken us 10 months to move into the top 500, and the 'radar' view of the Kakao stats projects us moving up to 394 in another 2 months, assuming no changes. We only broke the 800 rank two months ago. So we're definitely 'steady', but we're not all THAT slow!

I just bought a new computer and was even considering adding an ATI video card simply for helping out our folding effort, but unfortunately I'd have to upgrade my power supply, too, and I can't really afford to do that while I'm still job hunting.

Hey! Anybody out there got a decent PS that Jeannie can get free or cheap? Dang Jeannie I just gave a 450W away to the Thrift Store! :( If you need more than that speak up, never know what you'll find.

LOL! I tend to be a klutz, so I can't really imagine myself installing a new power supply or even figuring out what all I'd need to do to install an ATI board (although I'd hope that wouldn't require me to be making connections)!

I tried to install extra memory on my 'old' compuiter and couldn't get one of the DIMMs to go into the slot properly, and took it to the 'shop' where I needed to replace the hard drive, anyway. But the increased memory from half a Gb to 1.5 GB really helped my old p4 2.8 Ghz machine a lot - it's folding nearly twice as fast as it used to.

I'll have to admit, though, I was surprised to discover that my brand-new HPa6130n with AMD 64x2 5000 processor and 3Gb of RAM and Windows Vista Home Premium has such an inadequate power supply - 220 watts. Several salespeople at the store where I bought it said I could add a graphics card and they didn't seem to be aware of the power supply issue - I had to call HP to find it out, and THEIR people tried to sell me an NVIDIA board that required more than the power supply I have <g>.

hey we need to get another recruiting campaign going here. even if you fold one project a week, with a few hundred of us doing just that, that will be enough to put us over the top

Okay, I'd like to help the team more. Have I done something wrong in the setup or is this all my measly computer can dish out or does it seem about right for this age of computer? It's about 3 years old. I've looked at the forums over there a little and a lot of it seems to be over my head, but I think this may be the best it can do.

    Here's my specs

3.2 gHz Pentium 4 HT (Northwood)
    8kb primary cache
    512 secondary cache
    1GB memory
    GeForce FX 5200

Any suggestions other than new hardware (this is my work station).

I think that sounds about right. Check some of SPE's posts, he probably knows the most but there ain't nothing like new hardware! :p Also Clear, China and I all have multiple machines we are running the Folding client on and that's the main reason we get such high daily scores. One last thing, 105 points a day ain't nothing to laugh at and the one discovery that cures a disease can come from any computer fast or slow. I just hope the one for diabeties comes from mine or the team (PC) that I'm on cause I got a personal on that one. MooHahAHhAHAhahAha keep Folding baby!

    Wildkow

p.s. BTW a cheaper alternative to upgrading all your hardware is to replace your vid card with a ATI graphics card that runs the Folding Client.

(assuming you are running Windows Operating system)....
You don't have to upgrade your hardware. Your machine will run Folding@home Client. Depends on your comfort, you can run either the GUI (Graphic User Interface) or Text only client. GUI is much more simple to deal with for a starter.
Since you have a P4 HT CPU, the GUI/text only client will not take the advantages of HT. Allocate 100% CPU on the Folding Client will only take net ~ 50% of your CPU cycle. If you want to contribute more (allocate 100% of your CPU cycle), you can run 2 instances of the Folding@home client. Let me know if you have any problem on setting up the "dual instances" client.
But first, try to download the client from HERE. Install the client and configure the client with your preferences.

    Normal configuration is
    Team Number = 52533
Ask before using network = No (not check)
Use Internet Explorer = No (not check)
Use Proxy = no (not check)
Allow work assignment of 5mb or more = Your choice of yes (more computation, more point but take longer time to finish) or no (less computation, less point but fastest to finish the work)
    CPU Priority = lowest possible.
    Checkpoint = 30min.

    Hope this help.

[/b][/quote]Thank you Wildkow, it is nice to see that you do not hold a grudge after I ran over your butt and left Prius tracks on it. The traction control kept me honest. We are all working for the greater good. There is new hardware on the way!
