The Prius is a great car but I went up to Wyoming yesterday and was driving on some back roads and of course came across a bunch of cows. Normally when this happens in other cars they move but in the prius and its quiet silent way of life the dumb animals just sat there and stared at me. Moving forward had no effect, and yelling and honking didnt either. Fortunately a guy on an ATV came by and that made the cows run for there lives and I finally got though. Not thats its a bad thing but it is quite funny. I have to say since I started taking my Prius into the mountains I have never before been able to drive with in less than 10 feet of deer and have them just look at me and not run away. Same with many other animals. In fact one has to be careful as you could hit them! Bottom line, it may be worth the $5 to get a toy cap gun and or other noise maker if you plan on going out into the wild with your prius. Otherwise enjoy the silence!

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(jewelerdave @ Jul 31 2007, 10:54 AM) </div> Sure you can. 1) Put the car in "D". 2) Put your left foot firmly on the brake. 3) Press the accelerator with your right foot. Sure you'll waste a little gas, but the engine will rev up, and you'll charge the battery while you're at it.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Danny Hamilton @ Jul 31 2007, 11:58 AM) </div> I have done the above to charge the battery during traffic jams, in order to keep the ICE from cycling on/off every time the car moves forward/stops. However, in another thread someone explained that this should not be done... I don't remember the technical explanation.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(cakeboyrich @ Jul 31 2007, 11:00 AM) </div> Nope, nobody forgot about the horn. Someone did however forget to read the original post. "Moving forward had no effect, and yelling and honking didnt either."
that's just how cows are... sometimes they'll hang around in front of the tractor till you think it's gonna hit them!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(jamarimutt @ Jul 31 2007, 11:03 AM) </div> The only reason I can think of that is "should not be done" when sitting in traffic jams is that it is unnecessary and wastes gasoline. I made sure that I warned the OP that this process would waste a little gas.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(jewelerdave @ Jul 31 2007, 09:32 AM) </div> If you had this problem all the time, you could get a Wolo Record-A-Horn and program the sound of an ATV into it. My problem is people not hearing I'm there and walking in front of the car as I stealthily move along, has happened many times. I got the Record-A-Horn but have not installed yet, thinking about what sound to play to have people notice I'm there and not get them mad. Maybe "HERE I COME" in morse code. Will leave them scratching their heads.
I've had birds I have had to swerve around... I've been able to stop next to deer, and had them look at me rather puzzled... Have to be careful in neighborhoods with children, as they don't hear me coming, either! I've beeped my horn more than once to alert kids and dogs that I'm on their street. It reminds me of electric knives. They are noisy on purpose... people would cut themselves before the companies made them noisier.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(abq sfr @ Jul 31 2007, 10:00 AM) </div> I guess the sound of squealing tires wouldn't be a good choice.
I think your Prius would look great with a pair of these mounted on it: Looking more like a flying saucer all the time!
You just need a better horn: http://www.hornblasters.com/video.php?pic=48 come back later & I dare you to say it won't scare 'em.
