Our car has a buzzing noise almost every time you push or release the brake pedal and sometimes when you push the gas pedal. It is not a loose panel type of buzz, but more like an electric motor buzz as it turns on and off. It seems like the car is doing this more than when we first got it. This may be a normal, but I just want to be sure. The noise is coming from behind the lower driver's side dash panel. Any idea what this may be?

yeah, it's not a problem. Now, on the other hand, if your car blows up and bursts into flames tomorrow, don't hold me to that... I could be wrong.....
I have the same thing and didn't notice it in the before I hit about 1200 miles. Maybe its because its hotter out but a week ago it was 100 and I noticed the buzz sound when I accelerated and when I hit the brakes. I read on one post that it is the brake pump doing its thing. I was going to take it into toyota but after reading other users have the same thing I've just ignored it.
Totally normal. It's some kind of accumulator pump ensuring there's pressure to the brakes if you need it. Every time you press them with the engine off, a little pressure is lost in the system. The pump builds it back up. Nothing to worry about.
The Prius can't use an engine driven brake pump since the engine turns off at odd times ("Oh no! I'm on electric so I can't stop!"). The buzzing is an electric accumulator pump that builds pressure for the brakes. It runs any time it needs to, which is usually about every third time you press the brakes pedal. Tom
I wonder if it has anything to do with this TSB: http://priuschat.com/TSB-BR001-07-Brake-ac...ise-t30143.html
if it's literally running all the time, there's a problem. otherwise, every now and then, that's fine.
My friend and I both have '08 Touring models w/Pkg #6. He never hears his; mine is loud enough to be annoying - even hear with music playing. Dealership not very responsive. Curious: Any out there pretty loud? If yes, have you complained to Toyota? If yes, what was their response? Thanks! Neilers in ABQ, New Mexico
---------------------------------------- i do not hear a buzzing when i press the brakes on my 2 month old 2008 touring model with approx 3,500 miles......all i hear is the regenerative braking 'whine' that stops when the car stops....
They all buzz, or perhaps it's more of a clicking or ratchet sound. There seems to be more difference in driver's than cars. People who play loud music never hear it, others are very sensitive. It's not a problem, it's just how the car works. Tom
Thanks, Cliff. I know the sound you speak of but this is different. My dealership has heard MY buzz and thinks it's somewhat louder than normal. They will call me when the Toyota rep visits the dealership so I can come in and have the rep hear it. Also, there seems to be a direct correlation to ambient temperature...... When the weather is cool, it's quiet. When the day heats up - hi 70's lo 80's - she starts to buzzing.
I've had my Prius for just shy of a month. I hadn't heard anything out of the ordinary until today (3300 mi). Not all the time, but mostly when I brake and some when accelerating from a dead stop, I hear this buzz. If anyone remembers the old rolling shutter type alarm clocks that buzz when they go off, muffle it and that's the sound I hear. Not that I'm glad that others are having a similar problem, but I'm glad I'm not the only one. I do have an appointment at the dealer for an oil change and to investigate the sound. But I do have a question, does anyone here get any warning lights/messages with this sound? I don't, or at least not yet, but I'd like to know.
You are wasting the dealer's time. As you can tell by reading the above posts, the buzzing sound is completely normal. It is the brake accumulator pump building pressure for the power brakes. That's why you hear it when you press the brake pedal. Tom
I've owned 3 gen 3 Prius. only my 2008 buzzes. I assumed it was a change in parts vendors or something. If someone actually comes up with an answer I'll be real interested.
They all buzz to some extent. Whether you can hear it or not is another question. My 2006 makes a nice rattling sound. I suspect you may find as much variation from car to car as from year to year. Tom
