I checked MA & KS Depts of Taxation websites and it doesn't look like either state charges sales tax on service contracts or warranties (unlike NY) — and because the contracts are national, rather than limited to the state in which you live, arguably they are not required to be used in the state where your car is registered ... so it's not like buying books from Amazon where tax applies to the state where the (physical/tangible) books are sent.

Also, as a note, when we cancelled our extended warranty and prepaid maintenance contracts with our dealer a few days after purchasing our Prius (thank you, Priuschat.com), we'd talked to our County Consumer Protection Agency (Nassau County, NY) who'd said that there shouldn't be any fee for these kinds of contracts ... when we told our dealer that, he first said that it was for "paperwork, yadda, yadda" and I said a "fee, yadda, yadda did not constitute 100% refund on a contract that wouldn't have anything due for 3 years" ... and then he waived the fee. I don't know know if that will work for any of the rest of you ... you may want to give your county or state Consumer Protection Agency a call and ask.

Can someone let me know if this offer is no longer available? I submitted my information online well over 6 weeks ago and still have not heard from anyone. Pretty close to 36k miles so want to get this purchased asap.

    Thanks.

    Just FYI....
I called my local dealer (were I bought my car from) and asked for their best price on the 7/100k, $0 deductible, and was told the best they could offer was $1500.00. I said thanks and immediately called Troy.

It could not have been easier and Troy is easy to work with. Nice guy.

I highly recommend TROY at TOYOTA of GREENFIELD!!!
    A truly no hassle experience.

I would just like to second this. I just received my receipt from Troy for the extended warranty on my 2007 Prius. He was pleasant. Responded to email and telephone requests and answered all questions. It is as easy as it gets and is a great deal. Go to Troy for this. :)

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We purchased our Prius without really knowing the bottom line. On a wait list for 3 months and ended getting second choice. This was all out of our hands. So when it came to warranty/service contracts....OVERwhelming! After reading Priuschat, we are now back in the "drivers seat". $1900 for extended warranty..I don't think so! Anti-theft register..NOPE! Paint, undercoat and leather protection..NOPE! Saving us $2448. I will keep the WarrPKG for $299, since an oil change is now $39 with Syn. Oil. WE will apply leather protection. We will wax (might go to detailors!). That is so we can enjoy the drive even more now. Troy, we'll be talking to you! Thank you all.

I too am happy... both of my prius's bought in Jan of 06 are at the magic moment. I "called" Troy and left a voice message, He returned my call within two days and was very nice and zero pressure.
I simply sent him via "email" the forms he requested, here is the info he requested:

    1. Proof of ownership
    2. Owner testify of mileage "write on paper and sign"
    3. Email items to "[email protected]"
    4. Will call you back and get credit card info.
    5. They will mail you papers from Troy as well as toyota.

I did as he requested and received my papers from the Finance company at Toyota of Greenfield already. Toyotas papers take two to three weeks, but I'm already covered since my file is in until Toyotas official papers arrive.

I am more than happy to speak good things about Troy to spread the good word.
I was getting ready to buy the 7yr/100K plan and he corrected me on my mistake since I was already breaking 36K in 1.5 years, I would definitely hit 100K before I would ever hit 7 years, so I bought the 6yr/100K he suggested and it saved me about 100 bucks on each car or 200.00 total.

No inclinations to get the best of anybody there!.....

This thread saved me about half price off the warranty and service plan. The dealer did not seem happy about me canceling the two options, and told me that I couldn't find a better price because northern California price had been set by the dealers and he thought SoCal was the same. He asked me several times where I got a better deal and finally said it must be out of state. I agreed that that was in fact the case. I also told him several on line forums offer better prices. (Probably shouldn't have done that). We need to keep this kinda on the down low or Toyota will end up price fixing across the US.

I am very happy and grateful for the members here helping me save some big money. I am happier with the Prius now as well since I can now afford to buy the hack that will allow the NAV and Bluetooth to work while driving. Imagine wanting that feature after spending 4k to have those options. I must be crazy huh?

Hello, This is a GREAT service! Troy was very easy to work with and now I do not have any regrets. We must keep this information fresh so that the "2008" buyers get the same service. THANK YOU!

Thank you Troy! I bought the 6Yr/100K extended warranty from Troy. I followed the instructions below and Troy called me right away and it took about two weeks to get my warranty paperwork from Toyota.

I have an '02 Classic with 80k miles. Best deal on extended warrenty I have found is almost $2,000.00 that will take me out to 100K miles and cover all the major stuff. Anyone have a better deal? I have decided to keep this little Classic model. I am beginning to grow fond of it.... jf B)

My past experiences with extended warranties (4 vehicles) have always been positive. I drive 18K - 20K miles yearly and have always benefited more than what I paid for the ext. warranty. I just completed the purchase through Troy for my new '07 pkg. 4 Prius, and I was very pleased at how easy the process was....and I saved a bundle over what I was quoted at the dealer! I used the process described previously by others in contacting Troy and he is a class act. Two thumbs up for Troy!

Is this before the car is 7 years old? What if the car is 6 years old, would the warranty be covered only up until it is 7 years old?

You have to purchase it while the car is still within the 3 yr / 36,000 mile comprehensive factory warranty period. So if you had a 6 year old car, it wouldn't be eligible.

I just bought my Prius last night. After weeks of research I thought I had all of my ducks in a row. I got the price I wanted, the trade in amount I wanted and the interest rate I wanted. I thought this was going to be the easiest new car buying experience I have ever had (it being my 3rd). Everything was going to plan. The sales man was very nice and very knowledgeable with no pressure. He gave me his best price right away with no haggling.

Then we get to the finance managers office to finish the deal. You would think I would know better. I sold cars for 6 weeks after college and have been through this process twice on my own and many times with friends and family. When they get you in that little office that's when the pressure comes on. Anyway, the guy starts the sales pitch for the extended warranty. I told him "no" after his first pitch. He looked up and me kind of shocked. "Really?" he said, "I don't know anyone who says no to this for the Prius. Do you know how expensive it is to work on? You need a trained Toyota mechanic at $150/hr to even change the oil!". Doubts started creeping in. I told him I don't like buying something without doing my research first and I need to get home and search the web (how I found this site) before I can make a decision about the warranty. He tied a different angle and said he would reduce my interest rate 1/2 a point (worth about $400 over the life of the 72 month loan) and upgrade me to the Platinum plan with zero deductible. My intuition was still screaming "NO!!!" but my defenses were crumbling. I still told him no.

Then he shifted tactics and started telling me about the service plan and how he would throw that in super cheap if I bought it with the warranty. According to the numbers he told me, the service plan sounded like it may be a good deal @ $1300. It was late and I could feel myself cracking. Finally I said, OK while I stepped on that little voice inside myself screaming NO!!.

We drove our new metalalic green 2008 Prius off the lot, tired, hungry and with two grumpy kids.

The car is truely amazing! No buyers regret there. But the first thing I did when I got home was start my research. I found this site and this tread right away. As I read, I knew that my little squashed voice was right. I had been taken. $3330 for the 6 year / 75K Platinum warranty and the 4 year / 55K service deal. I spent about twice as much as I could have.

The good news is that I found this site. I will be calling my dealer today to cancel the warranty and service plan. The car has 10 miles on it so we have some time before even thinking about an extended warranty.

    Thanks Prius Chat!!!!

Is the warranty and/or service plan still available?

Are they worth it? I'm still under warranty, just trying to decide...
