Is there anything worse than dealing with car dealers?? I'm sure there is, I just can't think of anything right now.

So I contacted a dealer on the Net, who sells the cars MSRP (that's good, no complaints so far!). BUT when I tried to get a further discount it started getting funny.

First thing she said: "Alex, the Touring Prius always has a package 6."
    It does??? WHAT?? Yeah.... OK.........

Then, when I showed her the forum and told her people have paid for the exact same car as little as $25800, she said that that price is less than what she pays for it as a dealer. Why do I doubt that.

Then she said maybe those prices were available months ago, not now. With the coming of the 08 in a short time, shouldn't the price of the 07 drop, rather than rise?

I hate dealing with car sales people (no offense if anyone here's a car salesman, I'm sure some are honest, though I'm yet to find one).

In Los Angeles only package #6 is available for the Touring version. Our salesman said the brochure is not consistent to what is offered in different areas. Las Vegas might follow the same pattern as here.

The basic option #2 here is the same as #1 in the brochure. Here, option #1 does not have the backup camera or the smart key features.

It is difficult to find a Touring Prius in Los Angeles, but it can be done.

    Regards,

I couldn't agree more. The only problem with the concept is that some manufacturers cars would not sell as well because the potential owners would be turned off by the "extended test drive".... So much of the car sales business is emotion driven....

The best thing you can do in preparing for your negotiation on the car is to go to Edmunds.com and run the pricing calculator for your Zip code. You will have the dealer's cost before factory incentives and what people are paying in your area for the car equipped as you want it.

If you find a car that is equipped as you want (colors and option packages), that is priced close (~$100-$200) to the Edmunds.com TMV number, that is a fair deal.

Getting a car for less than dealer cost requires extenuating circumstances. The dealer is not going to want to sell the car for less than was paid for it. If the car has been sitting on the lot for more than 90 days, then it is a different matter - the car is costing the dealer real $ to keep it on the lot and they will be very flexible to get rid of the car.

Many dealers have an Internet/Fleet manager. This individual handles sales inquiries from prospects that contact the dealership via e-mail. The decision regarding what price to sell the car at ultimately rests with the dealership's Sales manager.

I'm pretty sure the only Prius you are going to find sitting on a dealer's lot for 90 days is the demo they don't want to sell. Around here there isn't much inventory and the cars probably don't last two weeks. Liberty Toyota has the 2008 Standard & Touring listed with the same MSRP as the 2007's. Good luck finding what you want. Here's the link:

Thanks a lot! Looks like a great website/dealership! So that reconfirms what I was thinking. The 08s cost the same as the 07s, so anyone would just prefer the 08 at this point rather than the 07 if it's the same price. The 07s will sit in the lot and price would drop. So I'll either get a discounted 07 or if don't find one just get an 08 for MSRP.

Your logic regarding a discounted '07 will only apply if the '07 sits on the lot past the release point for the '08s. If the '07s fly off the lot, you will just have to wait until the '08s start appearing.

All right, no more games, the guy from San Fran who had the exact same car I want dropped $500 off MSRP, so I am buying it for $27.564.

I'm overnighting the check on Tuesday and flying out to San Fran a few days later, then driving it back to Vegas.

Thanks to everyone who helped with advice and info!

Can't wait to get my new baby in my garage!

Personally, I think that is the best outcome (bird in the hand vs. one in the bush). Enjoy your Prius!

One additional potential benefit is that your car will be covered (since the retail delivery occurred in California) under the California AT-PZEV warranty (10 years/150,000 miles) for the AT-PZEV emission control bits - which the high voltage battery is one of. The only downside to the added coverage is that if the battery fails, you would have to transport the car to a California dealer to have the repair done, but compared to the replacement cost for the battery, transport cost is small.

    Once again, enjoy your Prius!

The correct answer to the question posed is: Whatever it is worth TO YOU.

As a Toyota employee myself (I've been in Fleet sales for over 7 years now), and as someone who has sold multitudes of Priuses (or Prii) for anywhere from invoice to MSRP to OVER MSRP, I have a unique perspective.

Here in Phoenix, supply and demand dictate massive swings in pricing almost monthly. It all boils down to how bad you want one, and how soon you want to get it.

If it's worth it to you, and you're happy, there's nothing wrong with paying a profit.

The customers who pay the most are oft the happiest anyway, just ask anyone in sales... It's amazing but true.

Something is only worth what you're willing to pay.

    It's entirely up to you!

I paid 26,500 for a 2007 Seaside Pearl (blue) with package 6. The regular price was 29,400 and it was stickered at 27,400 (the 2000 discount which is good until 7/31) and then I got 900 more off by getting an online quote through the internet division which my salesman (at a different dealer) matched. Was easy!
