Nintendo Wii

So, we're all a bunch of old farts? Yeah, that should generate some worthwhile discussion.

PS: No Wii, but the Xbox still works fine, thanks.

 

Gamecube myself. Too cheap to upgrade until my toung-uns get older.
I'd love to try it though, out of curiosity.

 

I played with a friend's Wii (yes, I know that sounds really, really bad) and thought it was great. Not great enough to cough up $250 for one, but when they come down in price I'm getting one.

 

Do some Wii games use the controller traditional, or is everygame like using a flyswatter? How tough are these things for when people "accidently" let it fly accross the room? How much do the games cost?

 

It's quite a mix of control styles when playing various games. A lot of them will allow for different controller configurations. Some make sense enough that there's just one way. Driving games, like Excite Truck, are especially sweet since you hold the remote like a normal controller and tilt it left or right to steer.

Unless you or your friends are really inept, and/or don't follow instructions, none of he controllers will ever go flying. I've had a lot of people over to play Wii, and have not had any incidents.

When I was playing, it was in a roomful of very drunk people, and none of them dropped, threw, or otherwise accidentally let go of the controller.

And the game I was playing, I forgot the name but it was basically a "Wii for Dummies" game where the whole point was to use the controller in as many different ways as possible (including one mini-game where you're supposed to drop it on the floor ON PURPOSE).

 

Mario Party, right?

My wife loves that game on the gamecube.

No, but the same idea (run around a board playing a bunch of minigames). Sort of a Mario Party without Mario.

Speaking of which Mario Party is the reason I got a Gamecube (my nephews turned me onto it when I visited them a couple of years ago).

 

I have a Wii. It's keen.

 

We got a Wii after playing with my sons. One thing really nice about it is it is a family game. there are a lot of games that the entire family can play at the same time. Bowling, Party 8 are just a few. It seems that all ages like it, from 2 or 3 up to people in their 80 s and 90 s.

 

We finally found a Wii after calling every store in the state. Talk about breaking a sweat - tennis is an aerobic killer! We love it!

 

For those with a Wii, does the machine come with a batch of "virtual sports/games" such as baseball, tennis, bowling, or is that a game you need to buy separately? How good is the virtual bowling game? I am yet to find a bowling alley here in Cotonou, and have been playing with the idea of getting a Wii to get an occasional bowling fix (among other things) if the game is any good.

 

From my experience, you pretty much have to be a moron (or really, really, really drunk) to let the controller go flying. But if they do, the controller seems sturdy enough to take an accidental fling or two. I would be more worried about the nice, big, expensive plasma TV that's in the middle of the flight path than the $30 controller.

Wii sports does come with the system, and i have to say, the bowling is pretty sweet. Like anything, there are a few oddities you have to get used to, but overall it's fairly realistic. Much, much better than any other bowling game i've seen before.

 

Bowling? OK, so I never really got into the blood and guts stuff - racing sims are my favourite - but bowling?

 

The Tiger Woods game is pretty good too, IMO. And of course, some of the other party games...

 

i worked at a videogame store for about 5years or so.
i buy all the new systems that launch. ever. and in that time i've never seen a video game system that is so universally accepted as the wii is.

i personally have convinced 10 or so people that would "never play a video game" to pick up a wiimote and try.
half of them have bought it within the next month afterwards.

i've always loved nintendo and this just seals it for me.
get a wii.
get 3 more wiimotes.
get warioware and wii play. (for starters)
get some friends together.
get some booze.


you're life will never be the same again. ha.


and with wii fit coming out you can exercise it up and track your body mass. woo!

 

As a lifelong gamer, count me in for the Wii club. B) But I am at work right now, so I don't have my Wii #... sorry. Maybe I'll post it later...

I actually lucked out in April when I walked into an EB Games store and they happened to just receive a shipment. Sweet.

Wii Sports is pretty good as a pack-in demo game - bowling is the best of the bunch, especially the "power throw" practice mode where you are bowling up to 91 pins. Heh heh. Tennis is also pretty good. The baseball batting is pretty good, though the pitching and (lack of) fielding is pretty weak. Golf is adequate, though half-swings seem pretty hit or miss. And boxing is just plain horrid... I struggle to even keep a positive score in the "hit the gloves" practice mode, since it is virtually impossibly to differentiate between a head punch or a stomach punch. Has anyone been able to do this?

Some other games I have...

Wii Play - only bought this game for the second controller. Very short-term entertainment. Tank is cool.

Excite Truck - great gameplay, so-so graphics.

Zelda, Twilight Princess - great game, truly innovative controls.

RayMan - friend works at Ubisoft and gave me this one... very bizarre game, though entertaining, especially the dancing games where you have to keep the rhythm. :lol:

Mario Party 8 - Been playing the last few generations on the 'cube, and for some reason this one feels a bit disappointing and I am not sure why. Perhaps I had higher expectations. The 'Hotel' board is the best, but you need to lengthen the game from the default 15 turns. Don't really care much for the two linear boards, the boardwalk and the train. Would have done without one of these and had another 'traditional' board instead.

Harry Potter - Wife's game, she's a huge fan. Don't play it, myself, but the idea of waving the Wiimote around like a wand to cast spells is pretty unique!

Aside from the new games & technology, kudos to Nintendo for finally making a backward compatible system, including the ability to download classic games... though it's too bad they are not free. <_<

I'm looking forward to when the Animal Crossing game comes out for the Wii, and when they will leverage their WiiConnect wi-fi technology to make some online games, not to mention interface games with the DS as the 'cube did with the Advance. B)
