I would say it would depend on the size of the bike and whether or not the front tire has a quick release as I think most modern bikes do now. Even many dept. store bikes have this feature and is very helpful when trying to get the bike into tight spaces.

You could also be sure to bring a length of rope or bungie cords as well as a blanket and tie down the hatch if it doesn't close all the way. It's not an ideal solution for transporting a bike on a regular basis but it should be fine for getting you home from the store.

OR you could also purchase a rack, use it to get the bike home and return it the next day h34r:

Honestly, I would suck it up and buy a cheap rack just to have. You never know when you might want to bring your bike somewhere or need to bring it to the shop or whatever. You could get a serviceable one for under $50 pretty much anywhere.

 

Where are you buying the bike from? If you're going to a regular bike shop, they should be able to help you get the bike in the car. You might have to take both wheels off, if so have them show you how to get them both back on again (practice a few times at the shop so you're comfortable doing it). Alternatively, the shop might deliver it to your home -- I know my local bike shop will do this. Good luck.
