My experience is identical, had the car for 72 days and I'm about to refill at 60.5 mpg, 627 miles. Thanks to people for the discussion before the car was purchased, it saved me at least $1k off the price, and after the purchase for their tips. I don't think I can do much better unless this magical ICE break-in period somehow appears or I buy some instrumentation.

man..I would like to know as well! I am trying my very best to get into 50+ MPG..I know my car is still in break in period, but 80+ MPG...that means I would have to drive around 45 to 50 MPH on the freeway..

45-50mph is to too fast to approach 90mpg. That kind of mileage involves staying below the 41mph mark above which the ICE always spins. P&G is a Prius driver's best friend if you are blessed with a route where you can get away with it.

dang...I don't think I can drive like 42 MPH in N. California freeways. I'll have ppl honking and high beam me all day long. I've been doing P&G since day 1, but I think I will make a new route for my commute to work..try to use as much local roads compare to freeways.

40 mph; Oh no. I average about 22 mph when I am moving. Bob Wilson's charts are great for closed course operations, but as you know great MPG in the real world has its challenges. I would love to have my Prius on a track where there were no discractions to see what it could do.

I have not been on the freeway with this car for about 10 months. I know that it is more than an extreme way of driving for 99.94 % of people out there in priuschat land, but I am determined (obsessed) to see if I can match or exceed the attempts of teddygirl and the prius marathon folks. I know how, I know the conditions it takes, but I don't have the patience to sit in the car for 12 hours a day for 6 days to get to 1400 miles on one tank. It is neat to think that I am one of probably only a few people in America that have gone more than 1000 miles on a stock prius.

I have picked routes through the city that have 25-35 mph speed limits and I have actually considered selling my car because I cannot or will not drive faster. The slow speeds combined with P&G are controlling me.

We just had another baby and the backseat room is bigger than my wife's Acura. There was talk that the prius would be the family car. I kept my mouth shut, but the thought of driving all over the place and multiple stops, oh lord. Shame on me. My wife likes here luxury and when she ultimately made the decision to take her car, I was left with the prius for commutes to and from work.

I have been slowing down and really taking advantage of gliding to a stop. I have watched this tank fall from 92 mpg at 300 miles to 87.8 mpg at 660 miles. It is almost impossible to average 90 mpg for my commute without either pissing someone off or getting run off the road. I will try again in August.

And yes, use your block heater year round.

Congrats man.. I am always amazed at the people who say the EPA MPG ratings are too high, I (as well as, apparently, you and many others on this board) beat our EPA estimates by a whole lot.

Alot of fuel use and pollution could be prevented if people would just ease off the lead foot a bit.
