Tall Prius drivers

I'm 6' 4" (76 inches), and I have enough leg room. My only complaint is a lack of thigh support. I wish the car had an adjustment for the height and angle of the seat bottom. I've taken drives as long as 8 hours, and as long as I stop to stretch my legs every hour or two I'm OK.

You might consider renting one for a day or two, if that's an option in Sweden, and taking it on the road yourself. That way you'll know for sure.

 

kaze72, remember that the european Prii do have height adjustment, while the US version do not. So some of the problems reported here may not be the same for you. But note the word "may", as I do not know if the adjustemnts will help.

I'm only 178cm long, so it's not a problem for me anyway. And my Prius will not be delivered until mid September. But it's very interesting to see the differences in the EU and US Prii.

I do lean the seat back to where my head is even with the B pillar though, which takes stress off your legs so you dont feel the lack of seat adjustment as much. It actaually helps with your spine also, because its not so compressed the whole time. More weight is acting like your laying down than sitting straight up, so your back and legs feel better longer, just from leaning back a few inches.

 

Hi kaze72. At 6'2" (74 inches) I find myself wishing at times that the prius had a little bit more leg room and seat height / angle adjustment. I think that's really the only thing I would really like to change about my prius. In any case, I tend to get a great deal of lumbar pain (lower back) on long drives, both in the prius and in many other vehicles that I've driven. As JimboK mentioned about thigh support, I've found that that is the culprit most of the time. Getting out every hour or two helps, but I wanted to try to solve the problem instead of just dealing with it. I went out and bought an Obusforme portable seat cushion (http://www.sitincomfort.com/obusformeseat1.html) and it helped immensely.

I forget which store I bought it at, but I know various online retailers carry them. I like this one because it is simply an ergonomic lower seat cushion, rather than a back seat cushion as well. I tried one that had a back attachment, but it simply reduced the amount of leg space even further, and I wasn't about to have that happen. I tried some other seat only cushions as well, and none of them provided the support and comfort this one does.

72" here, fine on headroom & legroom. Do wish the driver's seat had the "normal" seat adjustments I'm used to from my previous 2 cars. I would like to lift the seat front a tad, for more of a "bucket seat" feel. Took a 4-hour trip to NY from DC, and didn't experience any trouble. Have yet to try one of my 7+ hour trips that I take a few times a year...

It's good you've taken a test ride. My biggest complaint was that the steering wheel doesn't telescope (at least for 2006 U.S. models), so if my legs are comfortable, my arms are way out there. Luckily I have long arms and got used to that, but it is a different geometry than most cars.

The other thing is I flipped the rear-view mirror upside down (so the arm from the attachment goes up instead of down). It was down too low and blocking my forward vision before. This means the night-time mode lever doesn't do what it's supposed to however - I tend not to use it myself anyway, but could be an annoyance in the long Swedish winters.

The good news is that it has plenty of back-seat room - 5" (13cm )more than a Cobalt - so taller drivers can move their front seat back and not impinge on back-seat passengers.

 

MrKestrel is likewise 6'4" and wishes the front seats had more thigh support. He's got plenty of headroom and legroom though. I tend to drive the Prius more than he does when we're riding together in it, and we are more likely to take the other car (his Subaru Outback) on long drives since he's more comfortable in it.

tänkte att det kunda vara kul att svara på svenska. Jag är en 189cm (100kg) Svensk man med långa armar och ben. Jag tyckte priusen kändes lite liten efter första provkörningen men jag vande mig snabbt och är överraskad hur bekväma sätena ändå är. Dom är inte lika bra som Volvo eller Saab men helt klrt tillräckligt bra för långa körningar. Man kunde ju önska att Volvo eller Saab kunde lansera en hybrid snart!

I bought a Prius yesterday (package 5 touring). I'm 6'4" (76 inches) but my legs are fairly short (32" inseam) so headroom is a big issue for me in cars. I'm able to adjust the seat up and while sitting look out of the top of a Diamante with a sunroof, which really impressed the salesman. But the prius was one of the few that had enough. The visor is a tad low but not enough to be a problem, I can still see a stoplight even if I'm the first car in front of it. I actually only considered the car because my 6'8" brother-in-law recommended one.

I'll agree with nerfer - the rear view mirror is rather low. I'll have to consider flipping it.

If you don't go with the Prius here is my list of other cars with acceptable headroom that I compiled while I was trying to make up my mind what car to buy:

Chevy Malibu - OK headroom, center console makes knee room marginal
Chrysler 300 - ditto
Chrysler Charger - Good, knees tight
Dodge Durango - good, good - but it's a huge SUV.
Dodge Avenger RT Good, OK
Ford Escape - marginal, good knee
Ford Taurus - OK, very good. But seats are a bit narrow.
KIA Optima - OK, good
Mazda CX-7 - OK, marginal knee
Mercury Grand Marquis - OK, very good legroom
Nissan Altima - OK, OK
Pontiac Vibe - OK, OK
Toyota Prius - Very Good, good. Center console almost out of the way.
VW Pasat - excellent, marginal legroom
VW Jetta 03 - good/OK, But the 07 Jetta has been redesigned and is bad.

I would say that there are certainly some out there who are unhappy with the Prius' seats, and went to GREAT lengths to correct this.

 

I'm 6'3" but with a short inseam of 32 inches, so headroom is my issue. I originally did not want to even try the Prius as I thought it would be too short. It works out just fine -- as you can see by the fact that we now own two. I am more comfortable in the Prius than in our former Passat. I have even sat in the back seat and it is more than tolerable.

I'm 6-2 - weigh 235 - have size 15 shoes.

I fit the Prius.

She fits me.

I have test driven the Prius unpteen times. Leg room is fine, but thigh support is lacking for me (I'm 6'-2"--74 inches. When I get mine I will probably put RECARO seats in it, but a simple fix for you would be to get longer bolts for the front of the driver's seat, and put spacers under the seat frame to raise the front of the seat.

The answer in Swedish was made by a Swede living here--he just thought it would be cool to answer in Swedish. Basically he said he had long arms and legs, and the Prius still fits him fine. I'd be happy to give you the full translation if you like!

I'm 6'7" or 2 meters. I have a 38" inseam and wear size 13 shoes and weigh about 220 pounds. I would not want to take a coast to coast trip in my Prius. However, for our run around town trips and maybe a 200 mile trip I think I would be fairly comfortable. I almost 68 years old so I have to get out and stretch at least every 100 miles.
