Largest or most unusual Load Carried in Your Prius

I put a boxed 8500 watt generator in the back and was able to close the hatch. Surprised the heck out of me!!

 

I've also had 2 electric guitars, 2 amp heads, 2 cabinets, 1 4' long pedalboard, 1 bass and one bass amp in there.

Of course, I had to take it all out of the box in the home depot parking lot.

I have not done this yet, but in two weeks I will have to pack my drumset and at least my brothers guitar and amp along with my nephews bass and amp plus any other gear (microphones, cables, whatever else will fit) from our praise band into the car to go play at an outdoor event. As a group we are good at packing things tight so I am looking forward to testing out how much I can put in there. It will be a good chance to use the "secret" compartment under the cargo area floor. I'll update after the fact.

 

With all these examples of packing in the cargo, has anyone had any trouble with the strength of the lift-up floor? (ie, that covers the hidden storage area, over the spare tire.) I've not yet loaded anything more than 4 adults' weekend luggage back there, but I noticed that floor as a good bit of "give" in it, when you press down on it... Just curious if anyone has broken or damaged theirs with something heavy?

 

Hopefully, these loads are not everyday occurrences and the floors should be sufficiently engineered to give without losing structural integrity.

 

My first big hauling job: a 37" HDTV and a very large stand to put in on.

Both fit in my Prius without any modifications other than folding the rear seats down. I didn't have to take the TV or stand out of their respective boxes.

On separate occasions I've carried:

600 lbs of tobsoil in bags from Lowes.

400 sq ft of 5/8" bamboo flooring also from Lowes. The flooring was quite funny because the employee that was going to help be load it just looked at me like I must be crazy when my wife pulled the Prius into the loading area. I just flipped down the seats and starting stacking. It all fit with room for about another 4-5 boxes or another 100 sq ft. The employee was amazed.

 

I carried a boxed 40-gallon water heater in the back, with the hatch closed! It was a bigger box than most because it has extra insulation. Of course, the front passenger seat had to be flat for that one...

 

Well, not that large or unusual but it made me thank my ever-so-lucky stars that I had bought a nice sized hatchback: A metal queen bed frame, headboard and footboard (all twisty-fancy wrought-iron like and whatnot). Bought it off of craigslist. All the parts just fit in with enough space to close the hatchdoor. Actually, there was even a bit of room to spare. Getting it out was a bit more tricky due to the width of the headboard but we still managed.

My largest cargo loads were the serveral times I loaded the poor Prius up with stuff from my old apartment when I was moving. It came through like a champ of course. It'll be hard to ever go back to a sedan.

 

My wife & I brought home an 80 gal water heater from Lowes, still in the box.

It was maxed out at the inside top of the rear hatch, with the rear seats down.

 

Most unusual: an exterior 32" door, prehung.

Speaking of "hung", it hung out the back a bit. Ran some bungee cables around the end and under from the hatch door, and it stayed put fine. Of course, I went home on the city streets and avoided the highway. Also, there's an annoying beep for about 30 seconds if you try to drive with the hatch open. After that it shuts up.

 

two road bikes and all the gear needed for a 100 mile bike ride..... all fit perfectly with room to spare!

 

I think I win for the most dangerous cargo!

F8L ---you pyro that was definitely 'most dangerous' --- hope you don't smoke.

My most unusual load was 3 adults, 1 child, 1 Clifford the big red dog sandbox with cover, and 1 small 16 inch childs bike with training wheels attached... all inside with windows and hatch closed.

 

i got a 47inch flatscreen tv in there...didnt even have to take it out of the box. the guys at the store said it couldnt be done, but...

 

So far, the biggest thing I've hauled is my big nice person :lol:

 

ive stuffed quite a lot in my prius. enough lumber to finish a deck, a roll up door for a shed, 4 bags of concrete, my father, and tools.

there was more... but typing on the wii is almost painfull. hehe

i hauled couch. it stuck out a bit.... also haul jogging stroller. it folds so ok. it will not fit in our corolla without major disassembly
