Hi All, I just had my back 5 pieces of glass tinted, but I was expecting all 6. When I went to pick up the car and saw that the smaller piece of glass on the hatch wasn't tinted, I ask why not. I was told they've had several experiences with the glass cracking when they apply heat (from a heat gun) to set the tint. As a result, they don't do it anymore. They apologized for the miscommunication. Has anyone else heard this (smaller piece of glass cracking)? The shop has been around since 1979 and this is the third car I had them tint for me since 1990. Thanks, skuke
they tinted mine, no problem.... they did ask if i wanted it done since it already has some tinting.... i was very emphatic that i DID want it done!
My tint shop suggested before the job that I leave it out, since we settled on 35% all around and that window is already 35%. He would have included it in the (rather steep $300) price if I wanted it. No mention of any potential for cracking the glass.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(bobdavisnpf @ Jul 2 2007, 09:04 PM) </div> My shop would do it but it would cost more and not make much differance because of the va tint laws so I passed on it and I like it that way.
Had our Prius tinted today and they did not do the lower piece. I like it not being done. They did all the other windows though for $139.
My tint shop said the usually did not tint that piece but could if I wanted to. I chose not to do it, and it looks OK with the 35% tint on the rest of the rear windows.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(bobdavisnpf @ Jul 2 2007, 09:04 PM) </div> $300? holy cow you got owned! I had my tint done illegally and it wasnt even that much. Should have been like $130-maybe $150.
I'll weigh in with all the others.....I had my windows tinted and the tint shop recommended not to tint the bottom window in the hatch since it was already tinted. So I didn't tint it. By the way, it only cost me $165 here in LaLa Land. (Los Angeles)
When I got mine tinted, they didn't do the bottom hatch window either. It's already tinted and wouldn't make much difference with heat rejection. (I've gotten used to the "two tone" view out the back.) Never heard about any problems with the window cracking from heat, although I did get some other heatgun damage which the shop quickly fixed.
We got our prius tinted this morning ,didn't have the back little window tinted either. Its so nice!!!Can't wait to take a long trip with the windows now tinted.
Mine was done professionally using Solar Guard 20%, they did all but the windshield for $159. I love it, but will be stripping the driver and passenger windows come winter for rural visibility reasons. the job has be done for almost six months now and is holding up perfectly.
I had the five rear windows tinted limo black for privacy when sleeping in back (camping) $140. With the front seats up no one can see in the back. One strange phenomenon with the Prius though; they didn't tint the lower hatch back window since it already had a light tint. The problem was that when the sun shown from the rear it would reflect off the shelf in front of the lower window and reflect a bright bar up onto the upper hatch window. Looking in the rear view mirror it was impossible to see anything but the bright bar reflection and not the traffic behind. So I had them tint the lower window $10 as well - and everything works fine. The car is much cooler sitting in the sun and really looks slick since the tint matches the black trim. The 2004 is a dark greenish gray.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(FlyrBud @ Nov 4 2007, 06:25 PM) </div> I noticed the same thing. I had my '08 tinted (limo) at the dealer on Wednesday (tint was thrown in on the deal) and they didn't tint that lower window. I'm thinking of bringing it back to have them take care of it due to the reflection. Anyone else notice the reflection?
