My Xebra does not make me look like a BAMF. But neither does my Prius. My Civic didn't either. But I'll tell you that EVERYBODY loves this car. I am bombarded with smiles and compliments and thumbs up every time I take it out.

That's about double what is listed on their website (it says 25 mile range), so I'm glad to hear they do that well. I'd still have to either find back country roads or drive 40 on the highway, and add about 15 minutes to my 35 mile commute. I'm telling you, once they make an affordable one that can get highway speeds, I'll buy it.

The ones on the web site, for which they claim a range of 25 miles, won't go more than 17. But if you take out the six small batteries and put in seven big ones instead, then you can get 45 miles. Zap is not an especially honest company. It's just the only company selling an EV that can work for my needs. Zap is not as dishonest or as criminal as GM. But it is rather shady. Its claims for the stock Xebra are greatly inflated. But reliable information is available, and if you know what you're really getting, so you don't get taken by surprise, it's a great car, and the most fun I've ever had driving a car.

Yet it's the long-range vehicle that makes the greatest impact, good or bad. My wife drives 1 mile. I drive 35. We could make a much better impact by making my miles electric than making hers. That's why they need to improve the technology.

I saw today that they announced a sedan in the works that will get 100 miles per charge for $30k. It's supposed to be out late 2008 I think it said.

In the case of rural farmers, you have a point. But urban sprawl of the sort that "requires" urbanites to drive such distances was an intentional planning decision. Urban planners decided to produce sprawl, and suburban dwellers decided to live so far from work, shopping, school, etc.

And the thing is, you can argue all you want the necessity of driving such distances, but the time is fast approaching when you won't be able to afford to do so.

Who is "they"??? Zap has announced the Zap-X (vaporware; Zap has such a long history of vaporware that EV enthusiasts were amazed when they managed to bring the Xebra to market) but they claim an unbelievable 350 miles of range. And Mitsubishi has announced an EV, but that's for 2010, in Japan, not 2008, and no word on when it could come to the U.S. Tesla says its third car will be an affordable family sedan, but their first car has not gone into production yet, so there's no way the sedan will come out in 2008.

Please include a link any time you say that someone has announced anything so revolutionary, so soon. Or at least tell us what company is making the announcement. For those of us who really want an EV with more speed and range, the quantity of disinformation is annoying. And when you repeat disinformation, you (unintentionally) reinforce it. If you give specifics (company name, link, news source, whatever) we can see if it's new news or just old vaporware.
